Lot 26

This is one lot with four books by Charles Dickens all related to Christmas. a) A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens, New York & London, G.P. Putnam’s Sons 1900, Copyright, 1900 (for Designs) By G.P. Putnam’s Sons, The Knickerbocker Press, New York at bottom of the copyright page, the illustrations are from designs by Frederick Coburn, with twelve illustrations in photogravure, including the frontispiece, and nineteen illustrations in black and white, instead of photogravure, with red-captioned tissue guards present for each plate; 3/4 bound, four raised bands, with gilt labels and gilt lettering on the spine, modest decorations on the spine, with marbled covers and endpapers; the top edge is gilt, the book is 157 pages long and measures 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. wide, with light rubbing and modest wear at the tips. This was the first of Dickens’ Christmas books and came out in 1843, and it’s a perennial favorite of children and people who love Christmas. b) A Christmas Carol By Charles Dickens, Illustrated By Fritz Kredel For The Peter Pauper Press, Mount Vernon, New York, circa 1944, with a green slipcase, red and green holly decorations on cover, blank endpapers, a red topstain, and inscribed “Ashley Day Leavitt, best times for 1944 - last paragraph on page 26” on the second front free endpaper; Ashley Day Leavitt (1877–1959) was a Yale-educated Congregational minister who led the State Street Church in Portland, Maine, and later the Harvard Congregational Church in Brookline, Massachusetts; he was a frequent public speaker during the early twentieth century and was awarded an honorary degree from Bowdoin College for his pastorship of several congregations during wartime; the last paragraph on page 26 starts with “Mankind is my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence were, all, my business”; the book also includes a Christmas card which reads “The Reading of the Christmas Carol by Dr. Leavitt on Wednesday night before Christmas is one of our richest traditions. So we are sending it to you that wherever you may be on date, you may share with us the Christmas Spirit of Harvard Church”; a topstain is a normal coloring applied by the printer and does not indicate a “stain” on a book - it is not a “bad” thing; the book is 8vo. and possibly a first edition by Peter Pauper Press - 1944 is an early date for a Peter Pauper edition of this book - and book is 108 pages long and the slipcase measures 8 3/8 x 6 in. wide, with light browning on the spine and a tape mark on the front free endpaper where the Christmas card was attached to the book; the inscription by Ashley Day Leavitt and the attached card is what makes this book noteworthy. c) The Holly-Tree, By Charles Dickens, With An Introduction By Walter Jerrold, Thirty-one Illustrations, Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company on the title page, Copyright 1904 Henry Altemus on the copyright page, with the dust jacket, a beautifully illustrated front cover on the book itself, vignette endpapers with the owner’s name and date inscribed on the front free endpaper (“Elva Bommuleir from Mita G Ott, XMas 1910”), with an attractive colored frontis, black and white illustrations inside, 109 pages (counting the illustration on the last page), and the dust jacket reads “The Holly-Tree No. 1” on the spine and is the first in the Holly-Tree series by Altemus. The book measures 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. wide and the green hard-bound volume is in excellent condition, while the dust jacket is in great condition on the back and has some modest chips on the crown and the tips of the front cover. The Holly-Tree Inn was originally published as a short story in the Christmas 1855 edition of Household Words, a publication edited by Dickens in the 1850’s, and it was considered a portmanteau story, or a story written by several authors. The portmanteau story lent itself well to the medium of weekly publications because it allowed for authors to work together to compile a single plot rather quickly, and such stories increased in popularity during the Victorian era. Dickens only wrote three of the sections and the framing story for The Holly Tree Inn (The Guest, The Boots, and The Bill), and Wilkie Collins and three others contributed to the rest of this special Christmas extra. The story published in book form here is called a first edition thus by Altemus because it is based on the original story and has only one date on the copyright page and no additional printings. See Bill McBride, A Pocket Guide to the Identifications of First Editions, West Hartford, Ct., 1995 for first editions by Chapman And Hall. d) The Readings Of Charles Dickens As Arranged And Read By Himself, With Illustrations, London: Chapman & Hall 1883 on the front cover, and “Copyright” at the bottom of the front cover, The Readings of Mr. Charles Dickens, As Condensed By Himself on the title page, Price Sixpence, green wrappers, 64 pages, double columns, with ads on the interior front cover and on the interior and exterior covers at the rear. Dickens started doing readings for charity in 1853, and the readings here include A Christmas Carol In Four Staves, Bardell And Pickwick, David Copperfield, Mr. Bob Sawyer’s Party, The Story of Little Dombey, Nicholas Nickleby Four Chapters, Boots At The Holly-Tree Inn, Doctor Marigold, Nicholas Nickleby Three Chapters, and Mrs. Gamp; the book measures 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. wide, the front cover is detached and has wear, and there are creases at the tips on some pages, but very readable.

Lot 1056

Scarce lance or Pike for the Ill-Fated Strathspey Fencibles ( 1793-1799), triangular section head with short side straps rivetted to rudimentary wooden haft prominently painted with No.354 STRATHSPEY, small iron shoe. Head 15cms, overall 244cms. Quite good condition, haft now slightly curved. The Grant or Strathspey Fencibles were raised when Sir James Grant of Grant, having offered to raise a regiment, he obtained permission to do so, and two months after the declaration of war by France, the regiment was assembled at Forres in the end of April, 1793. With the exception of 41 Scottish Lowlanders, three Englishmen, and two Irishmen, the regiment consisted of Highlanders. On 5 June it was embodied and inspected by Lieutenant-general Alexander Leslie, marched to the southward in August, and quartered successively in most of the towns in the south of Scotland. Whilst stationed at Dumfries in 1795, a mutiny broke out amongst the Strathspey Highlanders. A spirit of jealousy and distrust of their officers had taken deep root in the breasts of the men, in consequence of an attempt that had been made the preceding year at Linlithgow, to induce them to extend their service, which was confined to Scotland. They erroneously conceived that there was a design to entrap them; a suspicion which appears to have originated in the conduct of the officers, some of whom did not explain the nature of the proposals to their men, whilst others entirely mistook their import and meaning. For a time the good understanding between the officers and the men appeared to have returned; but an incident which occurred at Dumfries rekindled the dying embers of dissension, and led to the most unpleasant consequences. A soldier in the ranks having made a jocular remark, which was considered as offensive by the officers, he and some of his comrades, who appeared to enjoy the joke, were put into confinement, and threatened with punishment This injudicious step roused the feelings of the Highlanders, who considered themselves as insulted and disgraced in the persons of the prisoners, and they could not endure that such a stain should "attach to themselves and their country from an infamous punishment for crimes, according to their views, not in themselves infamous in the moral sense of the word". The consequence was, that many of the soldiers, in open defiance of their officers, broke out, and released the prisoners. After this unfortunate affair, the regiment was marched to Musselburgh, when Corporal James Macdonald, and privates Charles and Alexander Mackintosh, Alexander Fraser, and Duncan Macdougall, were tried, and being found guilty of mutinous conduct, condemned to be shot. The corporal's sentence was restricted to a corporal punishment. The four privates were marched out to Gullane Links, East Lothian, on 16 July 1795, and when they had arrived on the ground they were told that only two were to suffer, and that the two Mackintoshes would be permitted to draw lots. They accordingly drew, when the fatal one fell on Charles, who, with Fraser, was immediately shot in presence of the Scots Brigade, (afterwards the 94th regiment) and the Sutherland, Breadalbane, and Grant Fencibles. The others were ordered to join regiments abroad. No other act of insubordination occurred in the regiment, which was disbanded in the year 1799. Please note we are not able to offer in house post and packing on this lot.

On one occasion, when attacking the grid and transformer station at Bologna, he machine gunned the target from a height of 500 feet with great determination and accuracy. His excellent technical skill and courage have frequently been of valuable assistance to his Captain.’Leonard George Davis was born in 1924 and was living in Bow, London when he joined the Royal Air Force. Initially serving in 61 Squadron he was awarded the Distinguished Flying medal in November 1943. It is thought that the Bologna raid mentioned in the press release was the raid carried out on the night of the 16/17th July 1943 when 24 Lancaster bombers attacked electrical-transformer stations at Bologna and Genoa when 2 planes were lost.He was commissioned into the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Pilot Officer on probation (service number 156354) with effect from 3rd August 1943 (London Gazette 5th October 1943) and was confirmed as a Flying Officer (war substantive) in the London Gazette 4th February 1944.He was by now flying with 630 Squadron and on the night of 21/22nd June 1944 he was the Rear Gunner in the Lancaster III ND.531 detailed to attack the synthetic oil plant at Wesseling. The aircraft took off at 23.30 hours. The attacking force comprised 133 Lancaster bombers and 6 Mosquitos. Due to 10/10 cloud cover the attack was carried out using the H2S system and the plant was reported to have been damaged slightly with 21 casualties being reported in the nearby town. The force was heavily attacked by German Night Fighters resulting in the loss of 37 Lancasters (27.8% of the force), 4 of which were from 630 Squadron. Lancaster III ND531 was reported as ‘Missing without trace’Leonard George Davis is recorded as having died on 22nd June 1944 and is remembered on the Runnymeade Memorial.

Mexican School 17th century."Coronation of the Virgin".Oil on canvas.Size: 104 x 83 cm.The present work shows an idealized natural landscape in the background, with the figures in big size in the foreground, as it was usual after the dispositions of the Council of Trent that directed the change of the Roman Catholicism in the Counter-Reformation. On the left, dressed in the typical unfinished leather in shades of brown and a red cloak, is Saint John the Baptist, placing the crown on the Virgin. In the centre of the painting, following an ascending line, is the dove of the Holy Spirit emanating light, and below, the Virgin, dressed in a red tunic and blue cloak, with her hands clasped in prayer and with an elegant gesture of humility. On the right, God appears, with the ball of the world in his hands, symbol of creation, and holding the crown in his hands like Saint John the Baptist, placing it in the Virgin's hands.Compositionally, and as is usual in the Mexican school of the period, clear influences of the Sevillian school can be seen (composition, gestures, colours, landscape, iconography, etc.), as well as a series of particularities of the school to which the work belongs (especially in the faces of the figures). It is also possible to speak of a slight recollection of models from Murillo, and the strong dependence on 17th-century Baroque models in the present work is clear.

Lot 62

Italian school of the late 15th century."Annunciation".Oil on panel. In need of restoration. It has repainting and damage.Measurements: 64 x 99.5 x 4 cm.This panel depicts the episode of the Annunciation. It is a composition with a long tradition that brings together the figures of the Virgin and the archangel Gabriel, with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove above. Mary is seated at a table on which a book rests. This device indicates that the Virgin was an educated person who could read, learned in the Scriptures, and at the same time introduces a narrative detail. The figure of the Virgin raises her hands to her breast in an attitude of devotion, as a sign of acceptance of the divine message, and tilts her head slightly downwards with a pleased expression and a slight smile. The scene is set in a rich, typically Renaissance interior, with semicircular windows that allow a view of the landscape, a typically Flemish aspect. Next to the Virgin rests a vase with lilies, alluding to her purity. The Annunciation is one of the most frequently depicted themes in Christian art as it marks the Incarnation of Christ as man and God, with Mary maintaining her purity and virginal state, points of great theological importance. Thus, throughout the evolution of the different styles in European art, there is a great variety of models and different details depending on the style, school and period.
