Imi Knoebel (1940 Dessau) (F)'Messerschnitt / rtg / 78', collage with acrylic on paper, 99 cm x 68.5 cm, signed, 78 dated, provenance/authenticity confirmation attached, provenance: Private Collection Düsseldorf, gift of the artist.Like some artist colleagues of his generation, the artist, born in Dresden in 1940, is concerned with reduction. His focus is on form, colour, material and the characteristics of the work that need to be artistically elaborated. From 1964 to 1971, he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Joseph Beuys and was concerned with the interrelationship between image and space. To investigate two- and three-dimensionality, he uses monochrome wooden bodies and explores them. His works are also linked to the principle of chance, which is why in the 1980s he also produced gesturally expressive drawings and material assemblages. With strict and moving forms, as well as between monochrome and coloured materials. His works are presented internationally in numerous houses - a remarkable exhibition list.In 2008, in the spirit of Franco-German friendship, Imi Knoebel was commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication to design six windows for the apse of Reims Cathedral. As one of the most important German artists of our time, his windows can be admired in the venerable cathedral alongside Marc Chagall's from 1972. They flood the cathedral in a colourful sea of lights, but until it was ready "three years of searching and experimenting passed until the finished windows of hand-blown antique glass could be installed in 2011." Knoebel drew inspiration from his knife-cut series "Red Yellow Blue" (1977-1980). Red, yellow and blue are the shapes cut by hand with a knife, the sum of which creates the work. They are individual splinters in the strong primary colours. Yet no two parts are alike, all have their individual design and their own place in the picture. They come together in overlaps, intersections and as a collage to form a complete work.

Kenzo Takada, acquired from the above. Kenzo Takada (1939-2020) was an iconic Japanese fashion designer living in France. He founded Kenzo, a worldwide brand of perfumes, skincare products, and clothes, and was the honorary president of the Asian Couture Federation. Takada was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor on 2 June 2016. For decades, Kenzo Takada had built an impressive and diverse collection of furniture, paintings, objects, works of art and fashion pieces, including many objects of fine Japanese art, displaying in his home a subtle balance between the influences of East and West, reflecting the free spirit of his creative genius.Kano Tsunenobu (1636-1713) was a Japanese painter of the Kano school. He first studied under his father, Kano Naonobu, and then his uncle, Kano Tan'yu, after his father's death. He became a master painter and succeeded his uncle Tan'yu as head of the Kano school in 1674. It is believed many works attributed to Tan'yu might actually be by Tsunenobu, but it is difficult to know since they often worked on larger pieces together.Auction comparison: Compare a pair of closely related eight-panel screens by the same artist, depicting cranes and pine trees in a similar winterly setting, at Christie's, Japanese Screens, Paintings and Prints, 27 October 1998, New York, lot 146 (sold for 74,000 USD = 124,500 USD in today's currency after inflation).

SHIBATA ZESHIN (1807-1891): A HIGHLY IMPORTANT 7-METER "CHOJU-GIGA TURTLES" EMAKI HANDSCROLLBy Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891), signed Keio ni tsuchinoto shunjitsu Zeshin (On a Spring day in the second Year of Keio, Zeshin). With seal Tairyukyo.Japan, dated 1866The Emakimono is humorously painted in ink and picked out in pale watercolors on paper with a continuous scene of 88 (!) turtles, all personified in a variety of human activities and pursuits including punting, sumo-wrestling, fishing, playing musical instruments, performing acrobatic feats and drinking sake. The work is delightfully sketched and loaded with satirical fun, overall a true fruit of native wit. The turtles, each different but altogether a symphony of sublime artistry, owe nothing to China, besides maybe a vague debt to its older artistic tradition. Instead, they are witness to that reaction against the solemnities of Buddhist art which we have noticed so rarely, yet so clearly in the past millennium of Japanese artistic tradition.Shibata Zeshin's studio was situated on the bank of a river, providing him with ample opportunity to observe nature, and the creatures that inhabited the natural world. Like many painters of the 19th century, he was eclectic in his sources and would have been exposed to traditional styles. However, Zeshin's skill level was such that he could fluidly mix techniques, ideas, and stylistic options, thus painting part of a composition in one manner and including elements of another to add variety and dynamics unheard of at the time.In the present work, the turtles are executed in the Shijo-manner but imbued with a personal, atmospheric quality and satirical elements, clearly Zeshin's personal homage and interpretation of the Choju-giga, the world-famous emakimono which pioneered the depiction of frolicking animal-person caricatures, painted in the 12th century, reputedly by the Buddhist monk Toba Sojo.Choju-jinbutsu-giga (literally "Animal-person Caricatures"), commonly shortened to Choju-giga (literally "Animal Caricatures"), is a famous set of four picture scrolls, belonging to Kozan-ji temple in Kyoto, which dates to the mid-12th century and is credited as the oldest manga in history. The scrolls are now entrusted to the Tokyo National Museum of Japan. The work belongs to the decline of the Fujiwara period, but it expresses in one of its best aspects the artistic spirit of their age.SIZE 704 x 31 cmCondition: Remarkably well preserved, with only minor soiling, foxing, creases, traces of use and old wear. Extremely rare in this pristine condition. Provenance: A continental private collection. Bonhams, London, 10th November 2011, lot 250, sold for GBP 32,450 at the time, which is equivalent to ca. EUR 48,396 in today's currency after inflation. A noted private collector of noble descent, acquired from the above. With two wooden storage boxes.

He received his first award from the NBTHK in 1990, after smithing his first sword in 1988. This would be the first award among many, including the Grand Prize in 2008 and 2011. In 2014, he was awarded the Mukansa ('without judgement') rank, the second-highest rank of swordsmith. Mukansa smiths may still enter their swords into competitions but they are no longer judged as they are assumed to be of a level beyond judgement. The present blade, crafted two years after Kunimasa was awarded the Mukansa rank, is impressive and exceedingly rare in its great size.

An Etruscan Bone Mirror HandleCirca 6th Century B.C.Height 8 3/32 inches (20.6 cm).O'Gara and Wilson, Ltd., Antiquarian Booksellers, Chesterton, IndianaProvenance:Private Collection of an Archaeologist, Italy, prior to 1949.Father Angelico Rinaldo Zarlenga (1919-1985), Italy and United States; thence by descent to his brother.Fra Angelico Art Foundation, Riverside, Illinois; where acquired by the current owner, 14 August 2008.Note:This rare and finely carved bone handle depicts a mythical scene from the ninth labor of Hercules in which Hercules draws his sword to kill Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons, and take her belt. Themes from Greek mythology were immensely popular and often the motif of choice for Etruscan toiletries. Originally a bronze mirror engraved with similar subject matter would have connected to this handle.Used primarily by women, these mirrors were designed to include relevant visual metaphors and allegories. As is the case with the handle seen here, the dark subject matter of death is made light with sexual overtones. Hercules is depicted in the nude with a warrior's physique holding an erect sword close to his hip, while Hippolyta is shown in full panoply with shield held high and in a defensive position. Together, these two figures fill the entire tableau, their bodies overlapping multiple times around the handle. Hercules' right arm can be seen tucked behind Hippolyta's shield, and left leg pressing against her inner thigh. They are facing each other, heads in profile, both with expressive smiles. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the spirit of this decoration was intended for the boudoir.Although the subject matter on this handle depicts a purely Greek scene, it is heavily Etruscanized. The geometric stylization, difference in scale, distinct drill work, archaistic features, and slight variations to mythological iconography, places this object in Etruria, Italy during the 6th Century B.C. when Etruscan culture was flourishing most. For a bone handle with similar scene, see The British Museum of Art (Inv. no. 1884,0614.30).Height with stand 8 13/16 inches (22.4 cm).
