Alan F.Hattersley Portrait a City(Pietermaritzburg)-Limited-Signed edition (168/1000) 13 X 19cm This, the second book on Pietermaritzburg written by Professor Hattersley, gives a portrait of colonial society more lively than any we have yet had. It is more than a history of the town for, with its fascinating glimpses of settler life, it presents an authentic cross-section of a South African community. Prof. Hattersley has written a book of unusual quality, perhaps his best, certainly his most richly- peopled volume, for it abounds in amusing anecdotes and reflects his deep knowledge of the lives and steadfast spirit of the Natal settlers, patiently adapting themselves to a novel environment. Unclipped dustcover protected in loose mylar cover. Limited edition of 1000 copies, this being numbered 168 and author signed. viii plus 124 pages text with five further plates.Feint offset to endpapers.Very clean copy.
