Juni 1816 wurde Hermann Ausfeld als Enkel von Christian Gotthilf Salzmann (1744-1811) in Schnepfenthal geboren. Er lernte als Mechanikergehilfe bei Breithaupt in Kassel, Wien und München und ließ er sich 1841 als Mechaniker und Optiker in Gotha nieder.
