WWII – Heinrich Himmler – ephemera fine presentation certificate on a leaf of vellum given to Himmler by the people of Quedlinburg ‘in appreciation and since gratitude for his tireless research into the home of our ancestral heritage...’ dated July 1st 1937. Written in an attractive calligraphic script in black ink highlighted in gold and signed by the Oberburgermeister of the Town. The certificate features two finely executed vignettes showing the exterior of the Cathedral at Quedlinburg and the grave of King Heinrich I. Some age creases and a few very slight blemishes to text but otherwise in generally good condition. A document of considerable interest in the history of the mysticism which surrounded the Nazis and the SS in particular. The certificate commemorates Himmler’s particular association with the town and the grave of King Heinrich I who ruled Germany from AD919-936. Himmler took a special interest in the history of his namesake and made a high profile propaganda visit to the grave of the dead King in the previous year in which he gave a seminal speech. Himmler asserted that Adolf Hitler was the earthly inheritor of the human and political spirit of the long dead King – and thus tried to convey that Nazism had its foundations in ancient history and the whole philosophy of German nationalism. Himmler also bizarrely believed that he was in fact the reincarnation of Heinrich I – and that the dead King was the founder of the Ayrian race.
