JOSEPH THOMAS (EXH 1850-1853) JOSEPH BARROWS AND HIS CHILDREN IN THE GARDEN OF HANDSWORTH HALL signed and dated 1849, ink and watercolour, 52 x 57cm Provenance: The sitters, thence by descent to the present vendor. Joseph Barrows (1804-1890), a prominent citizen of Birmingham, one of the Street Commissioners (the forerunner to the Town Council) founded the firm of Joseph Barrows & Sons, Wine & Spirit Merchants. The business prospered to the extent that by 1849 the recently widowed Barrows had bought Handsworth Hall, a large 18th century home with extensive grounds. It has been the home of Anna Maria Sacheverell and Anne Gough and afterwards Joseph Grice, JP. It was demolished in the 1870s when the area was redeveloped. In fine condition in what could be the original early Victorian ornate gilt frame

A large Fiji Islands ceremonial or cannibal fork probably 19th century, the elongated, barrel shaped grip with ring turned pommel and guard and three long, pointed prongs, the wood with a deep, dark reddish brown patina, 13½in. (34.25cm.) long. * These ceremonial forks, or `Ai cula ni bokola`, are often referred to as `cannibal forks`, suggesting that they were primarily used for cannibalistic rituals. In fact, they were implements reserved for priests and chiefs, who, `as living representatives of the gods`, were prohibited from touching food with their hands. They therefore ate everything with the forks, including the flesh of their tribal enemies at ritual feasts, sometimes unaided and sometimes assisted by attendants. Forks became a way of displaying power and influence, with decorated or elaborate examples denoting higher status. They were considered sacred relics, being passed down from generation to generation and were kept in a spirit house when not is use.
