Pioneer Aviator Pilot William Birchenough signed card inscribed HENDON 1914. William Taylor Birchenough (1891-1962) was a pioneering British aviator and test pilot. After leaving Eton Birchenough developed an interest in flying and joined the Grahame-White training school on 7 February 1913. Over the following months he carried out his training under the instruction of Marcus Dyce Manton before being awarded his aviator's certificate on 13 June 1913 in a Grahame White Biplane. Subsequently, he worked for the Grahame-White Company. Birchenough started to regularly compete in flying races at Hendon, from August 1913 onwards often flying a G-W 50 Gnome aircraft or Box-Kites. In January 1914 Birchenough took part in the Upside Down Dinner held at the Royal Automobile Club . Attended by many aviation pioneers, the dinner was held in recognition of those who were first to loop the loop in an aeroplane. In 1914 he competed in a series of air races and won the Shell Motor Spirit Trophy for a special speed contest. On 6 June he flew a Maurice Farman aeroplane at the last Aerial Derby before the outbreak of war and two weeks later he competed in the London to Manchester handicap. On 3 August 1914 Birchenough flew a Maurice Farman aeroplane from Hendon to Leighton Buzzard to carry out a demonstration at a Flower Show but was forced to return after learning that the Government had imposed a ban on flights that day of more than three miles from an aerodrome due to fears of impending war. The following day war was declared in Germany. After the outbreak of World War One he joined the Aircraft Manufacturing Company (Airco) as a test pilot responsible for delivering planes to the Aeronautical Inspection Department (AID) at Farnborough and putting them though their tests. In August 1916 The Aeroplane reported that Birchenough was one of the steadiest and most skilful pilots in the country and that since the outbreak of war he had passed a legion of machines through their tests In 1917 he was elected a member of the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain. Birchenough married Eileen Moncrieffe Mesham of Pontruffydd Hall in 1915. He died on 15 December 1962 in Wimborne, Dorset, England. Good condition. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. A SUPERB BRONZE OKIMONO OF A SHOJO, A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THREE METALWORKERSBy Kondo Shoshin, Kato Tatsuo and Hoshino Mitsuyoshi, signed Shoshin saku, Tatsuo, and Mitsuyoshi and kakihanJapan, c. 1928Separately cast in three parts and each part signed by its maker. The drunken Shojo, superbly cast and polished, is depicted with a separately cast minogame crawling over its shoulder and looking into a sake saucer (sakazuki) made from suaka (refined copper) incised with a flying crane in kebori and katakiribori. The minogame signed TATSUO (Kato Tatsuo), the sake saucer signed Mitsuyoshi and kakihan (Hoshino Mitsuyoshi) and the Shojo singed underneath SHOSHIN (Kondo Shoshin) and further with an inscription 贈呈 水道部員一同 昭和三年九月一日Zotei suidobuin ichido, Showa san'nen kugatsu tsuitachi [Presented by all the members of the Waterworks Department, 1 September 1928].HEIGHT 16.5 cmWEIGHT 2,876 gCondition: Very good condition with minor wear and some light surface scratches. One of the pegs of the minogame lost. The present okimono is a rare collaboration between three talented artists. Both Kondo Shoshin and Kato Tatsuo were pupils of Oshima Joun (1858-1940) and Hoshino Mitsuyoshi was a pupil of the sword fittings maker Toyokawa Mitsunaga II (1850-1923). A Shojo is a Japanese sea spirit with similarities to a ghost but differing from the latter in the fact that Shojo are tangible. It enjoys drinking alcohol, especially sake. Legend has it that workers at breweries in Japan have seen Shojo lurking about after indulging in their products. Both the minogame and cranes are symbols for longevity, furthermore sake is revered by immortals for its immortality-granting powers.Auction comparison:For a related bronze okimono depicting minogame, by Kato Tatsuo, see Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 10 November 2011, London, lot 386 (sold for GBP 5,250).

UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI: LADY OF THE EVENING FACES: YAZAMA'S WIFE ORIEBy Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga with seal Yoshi KiriJapan, 1845–1846Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical oban. Signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga with the artist's Yoshi Kiri seal, censor's seal: Watari; publisher Iseya Ichibei with seal. Titled Yugao: Yazama-shi no shitsu Orie (Lady of the Evening Faces: Yazama's Wife Orie), number 4 in the series Genji-gumo ukiyo e-awase (Ukiyo-e Parallels for the Cloudy Chapters of the Tale of Genji).Orie, the wife of Yazama, walking in the snow with a large dog, carrying a rolled-cup straw mat. Poem inscribed to the colophon.Inscriptions: Inscribed with a poem, 'Yorite koso/ sore ka to mo mime/ tasogare ni/ honobono mitsuru/ hana no yugao'.SIZE of the sheet 36 x 24.1 cmCondition: Great impression and excellent colors, with trimmed margins. Very minor foxing, one tiny hole, mounted on Japan paper. Each of the fifty-four chapters of The Tale of Genji is named and is associated with a crest called a 'Genji-mon'. In this series, each of the first fifty-four prints portray various scenes from history, legend, and literature that are suggested by a specific chapter of the novel and the appropriate Genji-mon is shown in the upper left cartouche with a poem. This series consists of one design for each of the fifty-four chapters and six supplementary designs. This print from a set of sixty intriguingly combines references from The Tale of Genji's Chapter 4, “The Lady of the Evening Faces,” with a seemingly unrelated scene from Kabuki theater—a culmination of Edo-period experimentation with parodic imagery. What does a streetwalker with a dog on a snowy night have to do with Genji? The woman is Orie, estranged wife of one of the “Forty-Seven Ronin” featured in numerous Kabuki and puppet plays. Here she is conflated with the tragic heroine Yugao, invoked by the yugao (moonflower) blossom and Genji poem on the scroll above. Like Yugao, who was killed by an angry spirit, Orie will meet a violent demise before the night is through.Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. The range of Kuniyoshi's subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. Kuniyoshi's work is held in the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Princeton University Art Museum, the Nasher Museum of Art, the Walters Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Van Gogh Museum.Museum comparison: An identical print is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession number 11.28819. Another identical print is in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 2008,3037.17404.

KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI: THE MANSION OF THE PLATESBy Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), signed Saki no Hokusai hitsuJapan, Meiji period edition (1868-1912)Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical chuban. Signed Saki no Hokusai hitsu; publisher Tsuruya Kiemon (Senkakudo). Titled Sara yashiki (The Mansion of the Plates), from the series Hyaku monogatari (One hundred ghost tales). The ghost of Okiku rises from the well breathing out a wisp of smoke, having the body of the Okiku worm after her namesake. Grape vines surround the wooden well.SIZE of the sheet 25.7 x 18.7 cmCondition: Good impression and colors with slightly trimmed margins and minor browning of paper. Very minor material loss to the edges. Mounted with tapes on a paper mat.Provenance: From an Austrian private collection. The reverse inscribed with the number, '1.'The legend from the 17th century tells the story of a maid named Okiku who breaks a valuable set of Korean plates. For her mistake, her enraged master throws her into a well and she dies, turning into a Yurei. The neighbors begin hearing her voice in the well every night, repeating "One... Two... Three... Eight... Nine... I can't find the last one..." After the rumors of her death spread, the house is confiscated from the master. A monk dispels her spirit after uttering the word, “ten” as she counted. This is a well-known ghost story in Japan. The most popular version was established in 1795, when Japan suffered an infestation of a type of worm found in old wells that became known as the Okiku bug (Okiku mushi). This worm covered with thin threads made it look as though it had been bound. It was widely believed to be a reincarnation of Okiku, having been bound before being thrown into the well.Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) is one of the most renowned and influential artists in Japanese history. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hokusai began his career as an apprentice in a woodblock print shop before venturing out on his own to pursue his passion for art. Over the course of his career, Hokusai created a vast body of work that included not only woodblock prints but also paintings, sketches, and illustrated books. His oeuvre is characterized by a relentless experimentation with style and technique, as well as a deep appreciation for the natural world and the beauty of everyday life.Museum comparison:A near identical reprint with a similar seal and printed by the same publisher, dated ca. late 19th century, is in the British Museum, accession number 1921,0511,0.18.

KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI, MEMORIAL ANNIVERSARYBy Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), signed Saki no Hokusai hitsuJapan, Meiji period edition (1868-1912)Color woodblock print on paper. Vertical chuban. Signed Saki no Hokusai hitsu; publisher Tsuruya Kiemon (Senkakudo). Titled Shunen (Memorial Anniversary), from the series Hyaku monogatari (One hundred ghost tales). This print shows a snake, symbolizing malevolence, as it crawls over the items used in a memorial service for the dead. In accordance with custom, the display includes a box of sweets, a spirit tablet inscribed with the Buddhist name of the deceased, and a green leaf floating in a bowl of fresh water with a central manji.SIZE of the sheet 25.7 x 18.7 cmCondition: Very good condition with good impression and colors, slightly trimmed margins. Mounted with tapes on a paper mat.Provenance: From an Austrian private collection. The reverse inscribed with the number, '2.'The snake represents obsession that continues after death. During Edo Japan, snakes in kaidan stories are usually the metamorphized spirits of the deceased. They are frequently the incarnation of women who died filled with jealousy, resentment, or scorn. In this instance, however, it is believed that that spirit of obsession being shown here is the artist Hokusai himself, prophesizing his obsession with his art even after his death.Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) is one of the most renowned and influential artists in Japanese history.
