Harry Schaare (New York, Arizona, 1922 - 2008) "You're a Grand Old Flag" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. You're a grand old flag / you're a high-flying flag / and forever in peace may you wave / You're the emblem of / the land I love / the home of the free and the brave." Perhaps no other song captures the joyful spirit of patriotism in America than the opening lines of George M. Cohan's famous song, You're a Grand Old Flag. Known as the "Father of American Musical Comedy" Cohan was born on July 3, 1878, in Providence, Rhode Island, and grew up in a show-biz family. His parents were traveling vaudevillians and when George and his sister Josephine joined the act, the family became known as "The Four Cohans." By age 13, he was writing songs and lyrics for the act. Cohan soon became the starring actor and was also selling original songs to other vaudeville performers. By the age of 20, he was managing the family's business and had complete control of the act. He later turned his attention to Broadway and composed his first musical in 1902 called The Governor's Son. He formed a partnership with Sam Harris and their show Little Johnny Jones opened on Broadway and became a huge hit featuring Cohan's popular songs The Yankee Doodle Boy and Give My Regards to Broadway. But perhaps his most memorable contribution to musical theater was his 1906 hit show, George Washington, Jr. Audiences thrilled to spectacular patriotic musical numbers, and cheered as Cohan marched up and down the stage carrying the American flag while singing You're a Grand Old Flag. Image Size: 17.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15 in. Unframed. (B05162)

Stanley Paine (British, B. 1934) "Rolls Royce Silver Ghost" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 29p Silver Ghost & Silver Spirit Rolls-Royce stamp issued October 13, 1982. The Rolls-Royce Company, founded in 1904, early the first name in luxurious motorcars. Cars like the Silver Ghost helped earn this reputation for its manufacturer. The Silver Ghost 40/50 model was introduced just three years after the Rolls-Royce Company opened its doors and within ten years had deservedly gained a reputation for being the finest car in the world. Of the first thirty-six Silver Ghosts made, no fewer than eight went to the United States. This excellent motorcar was hand-built to the highest possible standard of mechanical perfection and craftsmanship. Roll-Royce the running chassis and a specialist coachbuilder of the customer's choice was then engaged to create the body to the required specifications. Thus, no two Silver Ghosts were ever exactly alike. The Silver Ghost depicted in the painting is the 1908 model with Roi des Belges coachwork by Barker of London. Near the turn of the century, the Silver Ghost set standards of unsurpassed reliability and excellence both for its own day ... and for many years to come. For example, in 1907 a Silver Ghost traveled fifteen thousand miles nonstop between Glasgow and London, nearly doubling the then world reliability record. In commemoration of this historic drive, the same car -- now with a recorded mileage of over half a million miles -- once again made the journey from Glasgow to London in 1982. Indeed, the Silver Ghost was fit as a fiddle and built to last. Image Size: 6 x 7 in. Overall Size: 11.75 x 13 in. Unframed. (B07693)

Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Indians of the Northwest in a Canoe" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Northwest Indians built canoes that were 50 feet long and 8 feet wide. These were work boats. Each canoe could hold 20 warriors and 10,000 pounds of cargo, such as fish. Smaller boats or single family boats were also made. Canoes were of great importance to Northwest Coastal peoples. They were used for transportation, hunting and fishing. Their perfect hydrodynamic form has a lot in common with the Viking ship. Before a tree could be felled to be made into a canoe, its spirit had to be properly thanked and released to avoid misfortune. Northwest Indian art is full of the "eyes" of the spirits that filled their world watching them at every moment. These eyes can be seen carved into bows of their canoes. Typically a cedar tree was used for the canoe. The tree was cut, then the log was split in half. The middle was then burned and scraped. After a hole was created, they filled the hole with water and added hot rocks until the water boiled. This softened the cedar so that the canoe could be shaped and carved. Image Size: 18 x 23.75 in. Overall Size: 22.5 x 29 in. Unframed. (B05946)

Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Indians of the Northwest/Shaman" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the U.S. 15c Indian Art stamps issued September 25, 1980. One of North America's most lavish and colorful Indian cultures once thrived along the narrow Pacific Coastal strip from Southeast Alaska to Washington state. For it was there that the Northwest Coast Indians settled thousands of years ago, taking advantage of the almost limitless supplies of food and natural resources. From the sea, they gleaned nutritious salmon, herring, cod and even whales. And it was often said that, "when the tide goes out, the table is set," because of the wide variety of mollusks left along the shore. From the thick, dank forests came giant cedar bark used for firewood, canoes and even cloth. And, within the forests were fur-bearing animals which eventually led to a rich trade with Europeans. Needless to say, this wealth of resources left the Coastal Indians with much leisure time which they used to create, carve and decorate ceremonial paraphernalia, lavish houses and elaborate canoes. Sharing a deep and abiding reverence for the wonders of the universe, the Northwest Indians believed that all creatures and things in the physical world had animus or spirit. For this reason, they devoted much time and effort to the ceremonies which would prevent destructive storms, placate the spirits around them and prevent demons from thwarting their plans. The result was exquisitely carved totem poles, magnificent headdresses and intricate masks that represent amazing artistic abilities. Image Size: 20 x 18 in. Overall Size: 30.25 x 22.25 in. Unframed. Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Statue of Liberty #2" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Statue of Liberty Centennial Collectors Panel produced July 4, 1986. The Lady, the Goddess, Miss Liberty -- she has been called many names, but she has always been the symbol of freedom. Our grand Lady of the Harbor evokes the hopes and dreams of all those who gaze upon her brilliant face and flock to her open shores. The Statue was a gift from France to the people of the United States -- whose striving for liberty and social justice helped inspire the French in their own search for liberty. To help bring the vision of the statue to reality, the French government enlisted the help of a young sculptor, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Initially given the name Liberty Enlightening the World, Bartholdi envisioned the statue to embody the everlasting spirit of Liberty, which would serve as an inspiration for all nations, for all peoples, for all times. After experimenting with several models, Bartholdi revealed the statue in her final form: a serene but forceful woman in classical garb, with an upheld torch of freedom, a crown of radiant light, with chains of bondage broken at her feet, and a sacred tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence. Since her dedication in 1886, the Statue of Liberty has stood proudly in New York Harbor, beckoning the thousands of immigrants from faraway lands to her free and prospering shores. The story of over one hundred million Americans literally cannot be told apart from the story of the Statue of Liberty. Image Size: 26 x 21 in. Overall Size: 29.75 x 23.5 in. Unframed. (B10370)

Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Statue of Liberty" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the French 2,20ffr Liberte 1886-1986 stamp issued July 4, 1986. Standing proud and silent over New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty is a stirring symbol of international friendship. Americans owe its design and construction to the French sculptor F. Auguste Bartholdi. Originally planned to be given to the United States by the people of France in 1876 - the date marking one hundred years of American independence- Lady Liberty was not completed and presented to the United States until 1885. The spirit of the Statue had originated in 1865 when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Greatly affected by the tragedy, the French people commissioned Bartholdi to erect a monument symbolizing the living friendship between France and America. Entitled Liberty Enlightening the World, the Statue holds a plaque inscribed: July IV, MDCCLXXVI, and at the base of the Statue are the broken shackles of oppression. From her post on New York Harbor's Bedloe's Island, the Statue has welcomed thousands of immigrants yearning to breathe free. Image Size: 17.5 x 14.75 in. Overall Size: 21.75 x 18.75 in. Unframed. * ANDREW HAY (SCOTTISH b 1944), GLASGOW BUILDINGS oil on canvas laid down on board, signed 91cm x 118cm Framed. Note: Having started to paint at the age of 39, within a year the People's Palace Museum, Glasgow had purchased ten paintings and had given Hay his first solo exhibition. Since then his works have been included in numerous public and private collections. His work deals with both narrative and nature, sometimes subverting one or the other in order to advance his artistic practise. His insistence on invention, freedom and risk affirms continuity in his aesthetic spirit. He uses a network of codes, symbols and expressive techniques which play off his collective memory and familiarity of everyday objects and culture from his childhood and juxtaposes them with present day reality. In so doing he embodies them with a new philosophical discourse. Andrew’s work now features in many significant public and private collections and is in the permanent collections of Glasgow's Kelvingrove, Gallery of Modern Art and The People's Palace.
