"I've no work on hand, so can be nurse, secretary, or what have you...", Daphne du Maurier: (1907 - 1989) British Author, T.L.S. Mena, 25th September 1964, 'Bing', two pages, to Maureen Baker-Munton, ('Dearest Maureen'), now her husband Sir Frederick Browning is back at Menabilly 'here Moper is picking up, and being so brave and spirited about it all'. She continues 'he's already choosing a new car he can drive with one foot - a T.R.2000. Whether he ever will who can tell - but what of it, anything to keep his spirit up and have something to think about ahead. She adds 'Thank goodness my book is finished, and I've no work on hand, so can be nurse, secretary, or what have you'. Although 'one has got to keep calm and non-emotional. The thing of watching Moper in pain nearly killed me, but if I knew if I relaxed control in any way it would be hopeless. The queer thing is that I find this proper crisis of illness easier to bear up under than the drinking thing, which truly got me down. I s'pose, though awful, tis more natural-like'.(All rights are reserved by The Chichester Partnership and no written materials may be reproduced in part or in full without the express prior written permission of The Chichester Partnership c/o Curtis Brown Group Ltd)

[JAMES B. A. 'JIMMY']: (1915-2008) British Squadron Leader with the Royal Air Force. A Prisoner of War from 1940-45, James made numerous efforts to escape from various POW and Concentration Camps, most famously from Stalag Luft III in March 1944 as part of the 'Great Escape'. A large selection of greetings cards sent to Jimmy James and his wife, Madge, on various occasions, mainly Christmas but also including Easter, St. Patrick's Day, their birthdays (including Jimmy's final, 92nd, birthday) and other occasions, largely from the 1990s and 2000s although some earlier, signed by various individuals including family, friends, neighbours, colleagues and others from around the world (including Canada and Nigeria), some with lengthy messages sending social and family news, and some also referring to James's books, talks and television appearances etc., in part, 'Jimmy, it doesn't seem like over six months….since we finally met in person at Madley Field! It really was such a thrill to meet you, and I appreciate greatly your time and memories of which you have generously shared. I am still diligently working on Roger Bushell's biography. You will be one of the first to know when it is finished!', 'Freya watched the film “The Great Escape” the other day and she was very interested - especially after I told her all about you!', 'I was watching the Colditz programme on television recently and was so proud to say to my friends that I was related by marriage to Jimmy. Such brave men all of them. It stirs the heart to be reminded of their wonderful deeds', 'We watched your programme, “Behind the Lines” on BBC1 not so long ago - some dreadful things happened Jimmy, you must feel very privileged to be here to tell all. A brave man & some very brave men', 'I hope that you had a successful and rewarding tour of Germany with Howard Tuck. Inevitably our visit to Sachsenhausen was less enthralling without you….You were greatly missed…..most of the group had heard of you or had read your book. A few had actually met you….I did my best to recount some of your tales and of course made our annual pilgrimage to the memorial, your cell, and your tunnel….' , 'Congratulations to Jimmy on the programme over the weekend. He was so relaxed & looked very well - the start of a film career? They were all so modest about what must have been a living hell & of which the rest of us know so little', 'Thank you so much for the copy of a “Moonless Night”…..Nick has always been intrigued with the “great escape”. He has a copy of the old Hollywood movie and has watched it over & over', 'In memory of the Sagan Breakout, the spirit in which it was undertaken and the examples of those who undertook it', 'Marcus was absolutely thrilled with the book and the inscription and I think he devoured it within days', 'I was so pleased to hear from you that you are doing such good work with regard to safeguarding the memory of Sachsenhausen…..and also to promoting “Moonless Night”, hopefully with good success', 'I am just watching the Great Escape on Channel 3…..If I remember rightly Jimmy was part of that great story', 'Thank you for being an inspiration to me', 'You have made me reflect on how my patients deal with their somewhat trivial life stresses compared to yours & I have been telling them all about the power of the human spirit'. Most of the cards feature traditional designs and images etc., some have illustrations of aircraft, and a few are published by various organisations etc. including the Berlin Historical Association, House of Commons, House of Lords, British Consulate General (Geneva), Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service, Forces Pension Society etc. Generally VG, 321

Lot 209

SCHWEITZER ALBERT: (1875-1965) Alsatian Theologian, Musician, Philosopher & Physician, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1952. A.L.S., Albert Schweitzer, and again in the third person, one page, oblong 8vo, Lambarene, 15th August 1960, in French. The testimonial letter states, in full, 'I, the undersigned Albert Schweitzer, doctor of medicine, certify by the present [document] that Mademoiselle Margrieta Dingena van der Kreek, of Dutch nationality, a Dutch doctor of medicine, has been working in my hospital at Lambarene in the capacity of chief of medical services since March 1955 up to the fifteenth August 1960 and was appreciated by the doctors of my hospital and by me, equally for the work she performed as for her spirit of dedication.' Some very light, extremely minor creasing, VG   Margrieta van der Kreek (1926-    ) Dutch Doctor who served as Schweitzer's chief of medical services at his hospital in Gabon from 1955-60.

Lot 280

DODGE J. B. 'JOHNNIE': (1894-1960) American-born British Army Major of World War II, known as 'the artful dodger'. A prisoner of war from 1940-45, Dodge was a close friend of Wings Day and participated in the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III in March 1944. Dodge created diversions, such as choir singing, during the preparations in order to help mask the noise involved in digging the escape tunnels. An extremely rare War date A.L.S., John Dodge, one page, 8vo (feint squared graph paper removed from a notebook and with small torn perforations to the upper edge), n.p. [Dulag Luft], 28th August n.y. (1940), to Major [Theodor Rumpel]. Dodge states that yesterday the doctor had given him Rumpel's kind message 'about my staying up here for the present' and adds 'I want you to know how much I [a]ppreciate this gesture on your part - and also the walks', concluding by remarking 'The more I see of this place, the more I admire the way it is run'. A letter of extraordinary association. Two file holes to the left edge, only affecting one letter of the text, otherwise VG Theodor Rumpel (b.1897) was the Kommandant of Dulag Luft from 1939-41 and had previously been a flying ace of World War I credited with five victories. Described as aristocratic, engaging and courteous, Rumpel was not regarded as a Nazi and held no sympathy or loyalty towards Hitler. However, he was the Luftwaffe's best intelligence officer and spoke English to an exceptional level. Maintaining a spirit of chivalry, Rumpel was always attentive to the prisoner's needs, as illustrated by the present letter.
