Property of a deceased's estate 1926 Brough Superior 981cc SS80 De Luxe ProjectRegistration no. TO 2980Frame no. 417Engine no. KT/C 95312/S•Non-original engine and gearbox•Present ownership since circa 1981•Offered for restorationWhile equalling a Rolls-Royce for quality of construction and finish, in spirit the Brough Superior was more akin to the sporting Bentley. Not an unwieldy beast intended primarily for sidecar duties like the majority of its v-twin-engined contemporaries, the Brough Superior was, in its maker's own words, 'a type of machine designed from the experienced solo rider's point of view'. To prove the point, Brough lost no time in demonstrating his machine's capabilities in the most attention-grabbing way possible: by racing at Brooklands. Introduced in 1922, the JAP-powered SS80 (so-called because of its guaranteed 80mph top speed in road trim) achieved instant fame when a stripped-for-racing version (nicknamed 'Spit and Polish') ridden by George became the first sidevalve-engined (flat head) machine to lap the Surrey track at over 100mph. Even more surprising was the fact that this landmark figure had been achieved on its maker's Brooklands debut. Brough entered the 1930s with an entirely JAP-powered range, and then, after a brief absence, the SS80 re-appeared in 1935 as the SS80 Special, this time with an engine built by Associated Motor Cycles. Similar to that of the Matchless Model X, the 982cc sidevalve v-twin incorporated Brough's preferred 'knife-and-fork' big-end bearing arrangement instead of the side-by-side connecting rods of the Matchless. The SS80 continued to use the AMC engine until production ceased in 1939. Its accompanying copy Works Record Card shows that frame number '417' formed part of an SS80 De Luxe despatched to G C & J L Howarth of Sale, Cheshire on 26th March 1926. When the accompanying old-style logbook was issued in 1965, it was noted that the Brough had last been taxed in 1933. The Brough Superior Club first heard of 'TO 2980' in 1973 when it was purchased by club founder-member the Rev Michael Staines. By 1975 the SS80 had passed to one J B Davidson of Finchley, London N3, who kept its (non-original) engine when he sold the Brough's cycle parts to D W Belvoir of San Jose, California in 1976. Dating from early 1928, the (non-Brough) engine with the machine today was acquired by the late owner circa 1981 soon after he bought the engine-less project from Jan Barton of San Jose, California and brought it back to the UK. The gearbox likewise is non-Brough but is of the correct type and dates from mid-1925. Offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed, this exciting Brough project comes with an old-style V5 registration document and the aforementioned logbook and Works Record Card copy. The registration 'TO 2980' is recorded in the DVLA and HPI databases; nevertheless, prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's registration status prior to bidding. Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

AN EARLY IVORY NETSUKE OF A SAMBASO DANCERUnsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of flattened form, well carved as a sambaso dancer in a dynamic pose with one leg raised, leaning slightly forwards, the elbows bent and arms raised, shrouded in the long sleeves of his loose-fitting robe incised with foliate designs as well as stylized birds and waves, the garment folds and characteristic tall pointed hat with bold fine incision work as well, heightened with sumi, the back with two himotoshi.LENGTH 7.2 cmCondition: Good condition with some wear, expected age cracks, few minuscule nicks. Fine honey-yellow patina.Among the many traditional performing arts that have been handed down throughout Japanese history, sambaso is the classical performance that retains the oldest format. Its origins are said to be traceable all the way back to the story of Amaterasu Omikami, the mythical Japanese goddess of the sun and the heavens, and the Ama-no-Iwato (heavenly rock cave). This dance expresses the descent of a kami (Shinto god) to earth, and is the weightiest segment of a Noh play, handled as a Shinto rite. The dance is at times quiet and at times intense, as the flesh-and-blood human body dances the dance, and the form of the kami spirit inwardly dancing down comes in and out of view. A PAIR OF FRENCH EMAILLE ENAMEL URNSMID 19TH CENTURYEach tapering to a socle and spread foot, one signed Ch PARIS et CIE au BOUGET PRIZ PARIS (SEINE)61cm high, 55cm diameter The highly renowned firm of Charles-Emile Paris specialised in the manufacture of crystal glass, enamelled and mosaic embellished products. The crystal making and enamelling firm was founded in 1827 or1829 at rue de Bercy by his father, Jean-Alexandre Paris, who was the jeweller goldsmith of the Palais Royal. In 1867 Charles-Emile Paris left the Parisian site due to the new law forbidding the emission of industrial smoke in the capital, and founded a new factory at Le Bourget (Seine) at the site of a Louis XV hunting lodge. The new plant was destroyed during the war of 1870 and ruined Charles-Emile Paris; he had to sell the land in order to rebuild the factory on the leased site. The business was successful and the number of employees grew steadily and subsequently a retail shop was opened at rue de Paradis in the 10th arrondissement of Paris in 1876. It was a dynamic and innovative firm, which ensured its success. Among the most notable and prestigious of its achievements was the supply of enamels (1847) for the tomb of Napoleon at the Invalides, decorative mosaic enamels at the Casino de Monte-Carlo (1879), and winning a number of highly prestigious awards at the Paris International Exhibitions in 1867, 1878 and 1889 in various categories. Charles-Emile Paris also specialised in making elegant enamelled cast iron urns and jardinières for the display of plants in conservatories. R.), mounted as worn, good very fine (4) £1,600-£2,000 --- D.C.M. London Gazette 3 June 1919; citation published 11 March 1920: ‘240533 C.S.M. T. Dearden, 1/5th Bn. S. Lan. R., T.F. (St. Helens).’ ‘For gallantry in action on many occasions. In September, 1916, at Delville Wood, when in command of a bombing section, he enabled his section to establish an advanced bombing block in a trench occupied by the enemy. It was due to him that the block was held through five hours continuous fighting.’ Two original recommendations have survived among a ‘list of recommendations forwarded to Brigade’ which lists Dearden for the award of the D.C.M. and M.M., and also for the Roumanian Croix de Virtute Militaire: (a) ‘For consistent gallantry and devotion to duty in the field since February 1915. This Acting Warrant Officer has invariably shewn a fine fighting spirit and marked gallantry in many engagements. His keenness, energy, and disregard of personal danger, have at all times been of the highest value to his Company. He has been wounded twice, on one occasion remaining at duty’. (b) ‘For gallantry in action on many occasions. In September 1916 at Delville Wood when acting N.C.O. i/c Bombing Section this W.O. by his gallantry and resourcefulness enabled his section to establish an advanced Bombing Block in a trench held by the enemy. It was due to his gallantry and initiative that the block was held through five hours continuous fighting, and he did not leave his post till the battalion was relieved six days later when the position was handed over firmly established. On the 9th of April [1918] near La Bassee, after the first shock of the enemy attack, this N.C.O., who was then commanding a platoon, was sent up to hold a forward trench. For four days he held the trench under constant and heavy shell fire and during this time, by his example and gallantry, he inspired his platoon to maintain a stubborn resistance and offensive spirit. This W.O. has acted as C.S.M. for five months and has always proved himself resourceful and set a fine example to the men of his Company. He has not previously been decorated, though recommended for rewards on at least two occasions.’ Sold with copied recommendations, war diary entries for September 1916 and April 1918, Medal Index Card and other research, together with three original postcards - one postmarked Dartford 28 June 1915, when, having been wounded, he writes from hospital to his mother at 116 Peter Street, St. Helens, Lancashire.
A Fine Second War Fleet Air Arm Barracuda pilot’s campaign group of seven awarded to Lieutenant Commander E. M. Britton, Fleet Air Arm and Royal Navy, who was twice mentioned in despatches - firstly for leading anti-shipping operations with 828 Squadron out of Ta Kali, Malta in 1943, during which time he scored a direct hit on an Italian destroyer; and secondly as a Wing Leader during the strike on Emmahaven Harbour, Sumatra, 26 August 1944, when he once again secured a direct hit on a motor vessel. After commanding the 12th Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance Wing, as part of the British Pacific Fleet, Britton was posted to the command of 728 Squadron at Malta. It was whilst serving with the latter that he suffered fatal injuries when his Beaufighter crashed on take-off in June 1946 Naval General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Palestine 1936-1939 (Sub-Lieut. E. M. Britton. R.N.); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Burma Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, M.I.D. Oak Leaf, mounted for wear, generally good very fine or better (7) £900-£1,200 --- M.I.D. London Gazette 5 October 1943. The original recommendation states: ‘Lieutenant Britton arrived in Malta on 11 April 1943, and commanded 828 Squadron for a period of four weeks. Subsequently he flew as a senior pilot showing great keenness for operational flying. During his tour of duty in Malta he has taken part in 11 sorties, several of which he has led, and has now completed 60 operational hours. He secured a direct hit with a bomb on an Italian destroyer, scored near misses on E-Boats, and bombed a number of land objectives.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 2 January 1945. The original recommendation states: ‘He was Wing Leader of the strike on Emmahaven harbour, Sumatra. This strike achieved an estimated six hits on two motor vessels and considerable damage to harbour installations. He has always shown zeal and fighting spirit and led this strike in a most competent manner. He himself scored one hit and one near miss on a motor vessel.’ Edwin Michael Britton was born in 1920, the son of Brigadier E. J. J. Britton, C.B.E., D.S.O., and was educated at Cheltenham College (Hazelwell House 1933-37). He was appointed a Midshipman in the Royal Navy in May 1938. Subsequently qualifying as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, he was advanced to Lieutenant in June 1941. In his subsequent wartime career, Britton held several Squadron and Wing commands, his first such appointment occurring on 7 August 1942, when he became C.O. of 788 Squadron in East Africa for a few weeks. He took command of 828 Squadron on 12 March 1943, and led his unit’s Barracudas on anti-shipping operations out of Ta Kali, Malta, gallant work that won him his first “mention”, not least for successful strikes in the Sicilian Channel. In May 1943 the squadron carried out attacks on shipping along with 821 squadron, and provided flare illuminations for bombardments of Pantellaria island. Then followed a few weeks at Monastir in Tunisia. In total 828 and 830 squadrons had accounted for sinking 30 enemy ships and damaged another 50 ships. 828 squadron disbanded at Monastir in September 1943, and Britton assumed command of 831 Squadron during the same month. Britton advanced to Acting Lieutenant Commander, and was appointed to command 52 Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance (T.B.R.) Wing, 5 January 1944. The latter comprised of 829 and 831 Squadrons, and was one of the first to fly the Fairey Barracuda. Britton was appointed Wing Leader of the newly formed 2 TBR Wing (828 and 841 Squadrons), 24 January 1944, and later the same day took over 12 TBR Wing (815 and 817 Barracuda Squadrons). The Wing sailed east with HMS Begum to join the British Pacific Fleet and on arrival in August joined HMS Indomitable. Flying off HMS Indomitable they dive bombed oil storage facilities and airfields at Sabang, Sumatra, then on 26 August 1944, targets on Emmahaven (Operation Banquet). Flying with 815 Squadron as Wing Leader, Britton won his second “mention” for gallantly leading a successful Barracuda strike from the carrier Indomitable against enemy shipping and installations in Emmahaven harbour, Sumatra. Britton scored a direct hit on a motor vessel during the raid. Britton was subsequently posted to command 778 Squadron in February 1945, and remained in this posting until the end of the war. At the start of the following year he was appointed to command 728 Squadron at H.M.S. Falcon, R.N.A.S. Hal Far, Malta. Britton suffered multiple burns and injuries as the result of an aircraft accident when his Bristol 156 Beaufighter TF.X S/No. NV483 crashed on take-off during the first week of June 1946. He died as a result of these injuries whilst trying to recuperate on the Hospital Ship Maine, 21 June 1946. Lieutenant Commander Britton is buried in the Capuccini Naval Cemetery, at Kalkara. Southern Harbour, Malta. Sold with copied recommendations for both M.I.D.s and operation report for the strike on Emmahaven harbour.
