COBDEN RICHARD: (1804-1865) British Radical and Liberal Statesman, associated with John Bright in the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League.A.L.S., R Cobden, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 1852, to C. E. Rawlins, marked 'Private'. Cobden announces 'If we, in Manchester, found it necessary to confine ourselves to the one question of the corn laws - we who have a strong party there for reform as witness the character of its representatives - how much more necessary must it be for you in Liverpool, who have no other standing ground on which you have the least chance of beating the old enemy, the Tories' and continues to add 'I should say it would be madness for you to hoist any other flag than that of the League. What little of parity & public spirit you have amongst your constituency you owe to the free trade agitation. Stick to that for one more election & something may evolve from it which may hereafter enable you to send a couple of good reformers. Your present men are the best upon the whole that Liverpool has returned in my day'. Some very light, minor age wear and creasing, VG   C. E. Rawlins served as Chairman of the Complete Suffrage Association and was part of the Liverpool delegation to the Anti-Corn Law League's large demonstration in the Free Trade Hall at Manchester in April 1843.

Beardsley (Aubrey), a set of eight engravings to illustrate Aristophanes' Lysistrata, Beardsley's fin-de-siècle erotic masterpiece. The first edition of Lysistrata was published in 1896 in an edition of only 100 copies, with several subsequent pirated editions, and a collotype reissue of the plates in 1929. Beardsley remarked in a letter 'I think they are in a way the best things I have ever done'.'Beardsley had studied Greek vase painting in 1894 at the British Museum, and the Lysistrata drawings reflect something of the Greek vase spirit, including the bawdiness, without perhaps much of the spontaneity of Greek draughtsmanship. The absence of backgrounds, as in the Salome illustrations, makes the designs of closed outlines and bold dots and rare decorated blacks, all the more dramatic' (Reade). THE MACALLAN 1949 50 YEAR OLD DECANTER matured exclusively in Sherry butts, one of 900 bottled at cask strength in 1999, in Caithness crystal decanter, with lockable oak presentation case and certificate of authenticity (Dimensions: 700ml/ 43%)(700ml/ 43%)Footnote: Note: Originally released to celebrate the turning of the new millennium, this malt stands amongst the oldest vintages of The Macallan ever released and was exclusively matured in three Sherry butts. Although distilled four years after the end of the Second World War, malt whisky output in Scotland was still extremely low; traditional methods of production were employed, such as the use of coal-fired, which are now heated by steam at the Speyside distillery. As a result, The Macallan’s 50 and 60 year old releases are often considered rare artisanal products of their day. The Macallan is arguably famed for its approach to the maturation of their oily, heavy new-make spirit, becoming the first distillery to design ‘bespoke’ casks. Specific trees are selected, predominantly in Northern Spain, followed by a decision on the length of drying time, cask seasoning and even the type of coopering involved. From the few who have experienced the 1949 sherried malt, the flavour profile is said to be intensely rich and has a distinctive spicy nose, with hints of cloves, coriander and orange peel, reminiscent of a warm autumnal or winter spice. Unusually for Macallan, this Speyside malt has a peaty undertone, with further notes of dried fruits and dark chocolate. With a refreshing citrus finish, this whisky, decanted at cask strength, is believed to be one of Macallan’s best sherried malts.

George Campbell RHA (1917-1979)Clifden, Connemara, No.1Oil on board, 75 x 62.5cm (29½ x 24½'')Signed; inscribed versoProvenance: With Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, label verso.Exhibited: Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, 1967.With the creation of the Free State in 1922, Ireland’s artists took it upon themselves to establish and celebrate their country as an entity entirely separate from Britain. As such, artist’s sought images of a past Ireland, flocking to the West to gain inspiration from the unadulterated culture that prevailed in those remote hamlets. These scenes have now been immortalised in a multitude of works by such names as Charles Lamb, Paul and Grace Henry and Jack B. Yeats.Forty years later, the tradition of painting in Western Ireland prevailed, its wildness, spirit and community continuing to attract artists in search of the perfect subject. Alongside his friend, Gerard Dillon, George Campbell made numerous trips to Connemara and, in the 1960s, he began a series of paintings which centred on the town of Clifden. The current lot beautifully embodies the work that Campbell produced at this time. Focussing more on the mood and atmosphere of Clifden, rather than its structural representation, Campbell provides a semi-abstracted townscape in which the general outlines and shapes fight to be recognised from within a myriad of blue. Flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and set against the backdrop of the Twelve Bens, Clifden is portrayed as a town surrounded by the inhospitable. To the foreground, a cluster of trees sways towards the left, beaten by the uncaring wind as it rolls off the water. Overhead, the moon breaks through the clouds, fleetingly illuminating this scene, before once again being engulfed by approaching storms. And, yet, it is here, against the odds, that this small town flourishes.Using the reflecting moonlight to draw the viewer’s eye along the central road, we are brought into the painting and welcomed into the heart of the town; a haphazard, yet charming, collection of houses and shops all overlooked respectively by St. Joseph’s and Christ Church on top of the hill. As somebody who immersed himself with the community, Campbell uses his painting to extend this invitation to his viewers, beckoning them inwards.George Campbell is recorded as painting only in his studio, claiming that the memories that accompany him there represent those things that are worth remembering. It is, therefore, not surprising that this portrayal of Clifden is but an impression of the physical town. Instead, with his soft, blurring brushstrokes, Campbell has evoked the true character of Clifden and gifted his viewers with an intimation of the solace that this town provides for those who visit it.Helena Carlyle, November 2019.

LONDON, SOCIAL HISTORY AND COOKERYTwo volumes of social history, comprising: (i) Journal of a visit to London, kept, seemingly, by an English lady resident in France on her first visit to London, describing the voyage over from Le Havre by steam ship ('...listened to the rumbling of the Paddle wheels which shook us in my bed, and could almost fancy I was going in a railway...') in October 1849, lodging at 3 Gloucester Place, Camden Town; providing a series of sharply observed vignettes of the city: of its traffic ('...The Omnibusses... went much faster and were much better horsed than the french ones. The roads also macademized or paved with wood... We saw a lady driving with great spirit a little low pony-chaise, a little tiger sat behind her. Mr Benner told us it was a very common sight, at which we were not a little astonished. We saw a velocipede also going in the streets, to the great annoyance of omnibusses and other vehicles...'), local costume ('...even Buss coachmen conductors, lamplighters, sweepers etc wore the dress coat & silk hat... '), speculative building ('...We passed through new quarters with rows of charming houses called places or terraces, got up in the newest fashion & called villas or cottages, they however were not yet inhabited... Each of these new streets you would take for a main street in any town, so wide, so long & so clean are they. We had a distant view of the Model Prison & a Gas-factory. I saw four velocipedes going up Park-Street one after the other...'), railways and canals ('...We saw some constructions of viaducts for the Railway and a canal and basin along which several coal-barges, drawn by horses were slowly proceeding...'), shops ('...I saw some very nice cook-shops also supplied with every kind of rich & solid eatables also some very fine wedding-cakes & thick mock turtle soup in large basins. The fishmongers' shops looked very inviting as did the large opened lobsters that lay on the marble, displaying a solid mass of white meat...'), pauper funerals, brightly-lit arcades and shops, a blind man demonstrating braille, sandwich men ('...You will often see a man having a board back and front... walking patiently and monotonously backwards and forwards in the front of a house; sometimes, several men follow one after another with the same affiches...'), shopping expeditions to Oxford Street and environs, the Map Cave ('...16 or 18 views well worth seeing...'), the Soho Bazaar, and Christmas Day in the workhouse ('...On Christmas Day we went to the Workhouse of our Parish (St Pancras) where we saw portions distributed to the inmates (1320) men women and children. We were all offered by the Matron a portly blooming woman in a black silk dress, and attendants large pieces of excellent Plum pudding which was taken from the rest of the Plum puddings that were smoking around on large tables... finally to the Upper Room where about 50 little children from 1 to 6 years old were assembled , some around a very large table in the middle, some using benches as tables and sitting on little low footstools, others again on the ground around a warm blazing fire. A good discipline prevailed among this little Troop who looked healthy and had little ruddy fat cheeks; they seemed much better than the men and women who were very pale and haggard...'), c.34 pages, kept in a pocket account-book, first leaves loose, marbled paper wrappers, torn, 8vo, London, 5 October 1849 to 1 January 1850(ii) Recipe book, largely culinary with some medicinal, kept in several early 19th century hands, one employing phonetic spelling ('...A Costerd Pudden/ for a half pint basen a Quasrter of a pint of milk a lettel nutmeg sinimon an shouger an make it boal a lettel...'), many attributed, c.80 pages, in a contemporary green vellum clasped notebook, 8vo, 1818-1847 where datedThis lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •

Richard Clack (British 1804-1875) after Richard Cosway Lucy, Harriet and Caroline, daughters of William Courtenay Oil on canvas 183 x 132cm (72 x 51¾ in.) Provenance: Property of the Morland Family, Court Lodge, Kent The original painting by Richard Cosway dates from 1798 and is held at Powderham Castle, the seat of the Courtenay family, in Devon. It depicts Lady Caroline Courtenay, the future wife of Colonel Charles Morland, along with two of her older sisters, Lucy and Harriet (Caroline is in the centre). Cosway was a frequent visitor to Powderham and painted many members of the Courtenay family. William was good friends with the Prince Regent and Cosway was the miniaturist at the Royal Court as well as being originally from Devon. Richard Clack who painted this version was undoubtedly a relative of the girls' mother, Frances Clack. The vast majority of the men who entered into the Courtenay family by way of marriage, ended up in some way receiving an allowance or in paid employment. In true family spirit, Colonel Charles Morland, Caroline's husband, received an amount of £1,000 a year merely for being her husband. In this second version, the original mischievous putti are replaced by a dog which was perhaps seen as more appropriate.
