Louis Le Brocquy HRHA (1916-2012) Being (W1401), 1998 Watercolour, 61 x 46cm (24 x 18") Signed Provenance: With Taylor Galleries, Dublin, Label VersoFrom about the mid-1950s onwards, the individual human figure, conceived as a Presence, an isolated consciousness, has been at the heart of Louis le Brocquy’s work. In terms of the artistic tradition from which he emerged, that is unusual. All the more so given that, while previously he had made studies of individual figures (often children), he was more likely to paint compositions involving multiple figures. These works focussed intently on the relationships between people, be those relationships familial, amorous or socio-political. Then it is as if he began to zoom in on a single person in the group. He was perhaps prompted by a consideration of individuals who, more than is usual, experienced an enhanced sense of difference and isolation, just as he had earlier been drawn to Travellers as an outsider group in mainstream society.Around this time on a visit to Spain he was struck by the way the brilliant sunlight on whitewashed walls seemed to dissolve the human figure, making of it something ethereal, half-imagined. This idea, of the human presence conjured out of an amorphous ground of time and space, took firm root in his painting. Another significant factor was his developing relationship with the painter Anne Madden, coinciding with a period when she was immobilised by a back injury. It’s notable that he began to address the body as a fragile, living structure in his paintings. All of these things fed into the emergence of the head images that became a longterm preoccupation. Then, from the mid-1990s or so, there is a return to the body as presence in his work. This after a series of works centred on capturing the spirit of a succession of specific creative figures, usually writers, plus some artists and others. His inspiration lay partly in antiquity: the iconic Venue figures, perhaps goddesses, found in various archaeological sites in Europe, including the Laussel Venus, a limestone carving discovered in the Dordogne, which greatly impressed him. Rather than being individual portraits, as with the studies of writers, these works are free to deal with the more general notion of individual consciousness, in the form of the generative female being, embodied but also intangible and mysterious, extending through generations with a kind of immortality.Born in Dublin in 1916, le Brocquy is one of the pre-eminent Irish artists of the 20th century. A central figure in cultural life from the early 1940s, he is celebrated for his numerous, outstanding bodies of work in painting, the graphic arts and tapestry. His work features in numerous public and private collections, Irish and international.Aidan Dunne, February, 2024

Evie Hone HRHA (1894-1955) The Descent of the Holy Spirit - a sketch for the East Window in Tara Church, Co. Meath Watercolour, 82 x 45cm (32¼ x 17¾") Signed This unusually large sketch is the final design for the two-light east window by Evie Hone in the historic Church of St. Patrick on the Hill of Tara in Co. Meath. It was her first important commission after officially joining An Túr Gloine in 1935, but from where she had been working since 1933. As a loose, quickly painted sketch it is remarkably close, in terms of design and colouring, to the final window. It was only Hone’s third window and a departure from her earlier work in glass which reflects more directly An Túr Gloine’s house style of rich decorative effects and narrative detail. At Tara, Hone portrays the story of The Descent of the Holy Spirit as a frieze of monumental apostolic figures receiving divine instruction through red tongues of fire carried on rays of golden light that pierce billowing silvery blue clouds set against a patchwork of abstract geometric shapes. The window is regarded as Hone’s first mature work. She believed it was one of her best windows and is known to have visited it not long before she died. She exhibited the sketch widely and it was included in her first major solo show at the Dawson Gallery in November 1941. The cartoons were included in the posthumous retrospective held in Dublin in 1958. Only one other sketch is known to survive, an earlier, much smaller design housed in Church of Ireland Theological Institute (formerly the Divinity Hostel) in Dublin, which also holds the final cartoons. The window cost £250, was fixed on the 28 May 1936 and unveiled and dedicated on Whitsun Sunday just three days later.Joseph McBrinn, February 2024

Vladimir Griegorovich Tretchikoff (South African, 1913-2006)Zulu Girl signed and dated 'TRETCHIKOFF/ 51' (lower right)oil on canvas 66.5 x 49.5cm (26 3/16 x 19 1/2in).(framed)Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired directly from the artist by Mark & Aleen Dawson;Bequeathed to Aleen Dawson's niece, Donna Regan Lefeve;By direct descent to the current owners.Never exhibited in the lifetime of the artist, this work was painted during Tretchikoff's golden decade. It was in the 1950s that he produced such mass-market masterpieces as the Chinese Girl (a high-profile sale was handled by Bonhams in 2013), Miss Wong and Balinese Girl. The Broadway actor Mark Dawson purchased Zulu Girl in 1953, when Tretchikoff brought his show to Chicago. The second painting that Dawson acquired from the artist was the iconic Lost Orchid (seen also in this catalogue). It is probably an early version of the Zulu Girl, a work that first became available in reproduction in 1952, during Tretchikoff's tour of South Africa. The following year, he brought both versions to the USA for his tour of North America. After the phenomenal success of the tour, he took one of the Zulu Girls to London, where Frost & Reed, an old Bond Street art dealership, had lithographs made of the painting. Tretchikoff may be credited with introducing the African theme in popular prints of the post-war Britain. If we examine the issues of the Art Bulletin, a journal of the Fine Art Trade Guild, the leading association of British makers, distributors and framers of art reproductions, we will notice an absence of African portraits until Tretchikoff's Zulu Girl appeared on the market in 1955. The Zulu Girl is Tretchikoff's typical 'exotic' portrait. In his oeuvre, it is this kind of portraits that is most sought after. Unlike his pictures of Asian women, it is purely South African in its subject matter. With such studies, Tretchikoff created images of serenity for the industrialised world. In his exhibition catalogues, Zulu Girl was described as follows, 'A portrait in repose, suggesting the essential spirit of Africa, still so little known and so greatly misunderstood by the European.'The early version, like the often-reproduced picture, is dated 1951. The most obvious difference is the presence of a dappled red-and-blue background in the work in the Dawson collection. However, a more significant difference is the unembellished look of the model in this version. Tretchikoff tended to produce pastiches, where visual elements of different cultures were put together for effect. In the better-known Zulu Girl, as well as in many other 'ethnic' portraits by Tretchikoff, the model wears European jewellery that contrasts with her traditional African dress. Her large gold earrings, bracelet and necklace were unaffordable to a Zulu woman in apartheid South Africa.Depicting the same model without the inappropriate accessories, the Zulu Girl from the Dawson collection is a more authentic representation of African reality. We are grateful to Boris Gorelik for his completion of this footnote. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Offoedu-Okeke, Artists of Nigeria, (Milan, 2012), (version illustrated), p. 57.'Anyanwu, which is the Onitsha Emotan of Benin'. Meaning 'eye of the sun', referring to the Igbo practice of saluting the sun as it rises to honour the Great Spirit ChiUkwu, a supreme being in Igbo spirituality, Anyanwu stands as one of Ben Enwonwu's most famous and credited works. The figure's noble bearing is underlined by her headdress and coral jewellery: the royal regalia of the Bini people. 'My aim was to symbolise our rising nation. I have tried to combine material, crafts, and traditions, to express a conception that is based on womanhood – woman, the mother and nourisher of man. In our rising nation, I see the forces embodied in womanhood; the beginning, and then, the development and flowering into the fullest stature of a nation – a people! This sculpture is spiritual in conception, rhythmical in movement, and three dimensional in its architectural setting – these qualities are characteristic of the sculpture of my ancestors.' (Enwonwu quoted in S. Ogbechie, p. 129-130.)The circumstances surrounding Anyanwu's creation – Enwonwu's spiritual inspiration – connects him with the Igbo tradition of the artist as spirit medium. Personified into the image of the Igbo earth goddess Ani, Anyanwu is a demonstration of divine feminine power. Viewing women as the pillars that uphold society, the female subject has held a prominent position throughout Enwonwu's oeuvre. The Igbo concept of nkais an 'invocation of ancestral spirits through giving concrete form or body to them' as Enwonwu himself said and has indeed practised in this case. (Ben Enwonwu quoted in Nkiru Nzegwu, 'Representational Axis: A Cultural Realignment of Enwonwu', (1999), p.168.)Often elongating their features in his paintings, such as in the Tutu series, Enwonwu embraces the Igbo traditions of image making. While his tendencies to elongate facial and body features was sometimes motivated by aesthetic experimentation, Anyanwu's form came to him in a vision early one morning as he awoke from sleeping:'A supple graceful female form arising out of the sun in a brilliant shower of light...she loomed towards him in a wide curvilinear arch...the classic Ethiopianized features of the face and the decorative horizontal slats of the lower torso that receded into the horizon, tapering off to a point...'The original Anyanwu sculpture was commissioned in 1953 for the National Museum in Lagos, where it still stands to this day. It received such acclaim that another was commissioned for the United Nations headquarters in New York in 1966. This version appears in several major public and private collections, often demonstrating a variety of patina, and small differences in the arms and length of the coiffure. The current work was cast in 1987 at the Burleighfeild foundry in High Wycombe, a foundry that cast many bronze sculptures for the artist from their founding in 1977 until his death in 1994. The present work differs from earlier casts given its fine gold layer; gilded versions came later in Enwonwu's more developed casts. BibliographyS. Established in Coventry in 1885, by the start of the 1900s the company had made their first motorcycle beginning a continuous run of production under various ownership until its eventual closure in 1983. In 1937 the Edward Turner designed Speed Twin was released launching a range of Triumph twins that went on to epitomize British motorcycles in the post war years. The basic layout survived in various engine sizes up to 750cc until the eventual closure of factory in the early 1970s. Triumph staged a remarkable comeback in the 1990s with a range of completely new machines very much based on the spirit of bikes like the original Speed Twin. This one owner Speed Twin, from a deceased estate and being offered at no reserve, was bought new by the vendor's uncle from Duplex Cycle Company in Darlington on the 13th November 1951. Used by him extensively, including tours of Europe, looking at the last tax disc it was stored away in the back of his garage in 1965 and stayed there for the next 58 years. It appears to be in very original condition and will make a fascinating project to bring back to life. The family has found some interesting memorabilia concerning the bike including photographs of their uncle's tour of Europe together with the route plan issued by the RAC, the finance agreement when bought new, its original handbook, the last MOT issued in 1964 and a buff log book. They have also now found a modern V5C showing the bike has been logged on the DVLA computer and kept hold of its original registration number. Introduced in 1985, the new machine sought to capture the spirit of the great sporting singles of the past in a modern user-friendly machine. The new model drew heavily on their experience producing four-stroke trail bikes from the XL range, sharing the four radial valve cylinder head layout. The result was an economical engine capable delivering over 50 miles to the gallon and a top speed of 108 mph. The machine's styling was understated and placed the rider "within" the motorcycle. This 1985 Honda XBR has been owned by the current vendor for the last 12 years and in his ownership it has been the daily machine for errands and the odd bike meet. It has been a great machine that has never let him down. Showing signs of use, but mostly original, it benefits from its original exhaust system, a current V5C, a host of old MOT certificates, receipts for parts, and a sales brochure. GLENMORANGIE 12 YEAR OLD MILLENIUM MALT HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT 40% ABV / 70cl Famous for their unique stills, each as tall as an adult giraffe, and their passion for innovation, Glenmorangie remains one of the best-selling single malts in the world. They were one of the first distilleries to experiment with cask finishing; the process of transferring spirit from one cask type to another in order to impart additional characteristics and flavours. To further this agenda of innovation, in September of 2021 Glenmorangie began production at their new “Lighthouse” facility, a futuristic R&D department protruding from the heart of their traditional distillery complex like a monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Off limits to the public, it is home to a “sensory lab” as well as two of Glenmorangie’s signature stills, each of which plays host to several classified modifications. Only time will tell what exciting innovations will filter down to the rest of the industry.

Their elegantly packaged crystal decanters will be familiar to frequent flyers, as they often adorn the high-end display cabinets of duty-free shops in airports around the globe, carrying price tags that suggest they’re targeting those travelling on a 1st class ticket. Of course, a premium brand needs a premium product, and thankfully, Dalmore’s spirit lives up to the hype. They have a complicated distillation process that utilises mismatched stills to produce distillates with different characteristics. These are then vatted together, before being filled into the distillery’s preferred Sherry casks, all under the watchful eye (and discerning nose) of their legendary Master Distiller, Richard Paterson.

Nestled in the heart of the Speyside region, the rich spirit that runs from their “curiously small stills”, and their penchant for Spanish Sherry casks have proven to be a match made in Heaven, delighting the tastebuds of whisky connoisseurs around the globe. With demand far outstripping supply, they embarked upon one of the most ambitious distillery upgrades of all time, investing £140 million in an ultra-modern still house and visitor centre that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape, and is home to a whopping 36 stills capable of churning out around 15 million litres of spirit every year. Even so, getting your hands on a bottle can still be tricky, with new releases selling out as soon as they hit the shelves, and older examples regularly setting records at auction.

Lot 126

ABERLOUR A'BUNADH BATCH #8 SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT 60.2% ABV / 70cl Named after the small Speyside town in which it resides, Aberlour distillery has cultivated a dedicated following, particularly in France where it is frequently the top selling single malt. The spirit it produces ages extremely well in Sherry casks and has a distinctive note of blackcurrant. Although it boasts an extensive core range, the expression it is perhaps best known for is the consistently excellent small batch A’Bunadh.

Lot 199

GLEN KEITH 21 YEAR OLD SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT 43% ABV / 70cl Built by Seagram in the late 1950s, Glen Keith provided malt whisky for the Chivas, Passport and 100 Pipers blends until it was eventually mothballed in 1999. By 2001, the company was acquired by French conglomerate Pernod-Ricard, who refurbished the distillery and pressed it back into service in 2013. In addition to providing blending stock, the distillery is home to the Chivas Brothers lab, who’s experiments have included the production of a heavily peated spirit known as Glenisla. Official releases from Glen Keith are extremely thin on the ground, so the best plan for those keen to sample the seldom seen single malt is to hunt down some of the excellent indie releases.

Lot 316

LAPHROAIG 10 YEAR OLD ROYAL WARRANT 1994 ISLAY SINGLE MALT 40% ABV / 70cl Founded in 1815, and often considered to be the whisky equivalent of Marmite (in that you either love it or hate it), Laphroaig is a smoky, medicinal tasting whisky from the south coast of Islay. Clearly more people fall into the “love” category though, as Laphroaig is one of the top ten best selling single malts in the world. Just as well, then, that it is the second largest distillery on the island (after Caol Ila), capable of producing 3.4 million litres of spirit per annum. The distillery still retains its own malting floor, and although it only covers 20% of their requirements, it is instrumental in providing the creosote-y, phenolic character that defines the Laphroaig spirit.

Lot 25

GLENGOYNE 1972 SPRING LIMITED RELEASE HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT 55% ABV / 70cl Founded in 1833, Glengoyne distillery, just to the north of Glasgow, straddles the Highland/Lowland border. The light, fruity and honied spirit is predominantly filled into Sherry Casks that are transported from its Highland Still House, across the road to its warehouses in the Lowlands.Glengoyne wasn't seriously marketed as a single malt until the 1990s, and has since achieved huge popularity, especially in Europe. And, thanks to its proximity to Glasgow, visitors flock to the distillery in their droves to experience the many tours and tastings on offer.

Lot 272

JURA 10 YEAR OLD AND SUPERSTITION ISLAND SINGLE MALT Jura 10 Year Old - 40% ABV / 70clJura Superstition - 43% ABV / 70cl Qty: 2 With deer outnumbering people by around 25 to 1, it’s surprising the isle of Jura can sustain a distillery at all, let alone a decent sized one capable of supplying 2.2 million litres of spirit per annum. Although it was originally founded in 1810, the distillery closed at the turn of the century and wasn’t revived until the 1960 when it was completely rebuilt by two of the island’s local landowners. Despite the abundant peat available on the island, Jura’s style has tended to be somewhat lighter, as dictated by the blending requirements of its owners over the years. Today it is operated by Whyte & MacKay, under the Emperador umbrella.

Lot 69

GLENGOYNE 1994 RUM CASK FINISH HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT Distilled: 1994Bottled: 200847.5% ABV / 70cl Founded in 1833, Glengoyne distillery, just to the north of Glasgow, straddles the Highland/Lowland border. Lot 267

BALVENIE 12 YEAR OLD SIGNATURE BATCH #4 SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT 40% ABV / 70cl Balvenie is part of the Grant’s family and sits beside its sister distilleries, Glenfiddich and Kininvie, in the Speyside burgh of Dufftown. Established in 1892, just a few years after Glenfiddich, Balvenie has spent its life supplying the heart of the Grant’s blend. In fact, it wasn’t until nearly 100 years later, when Kininvie was built, that it was able to seriously market its own single malt. One of very few distilleries to retain its own malting floor, Balvenie is slightly unusual for a modern Speyside whisky in that it still uses a small percentage of peated malt to make its spirit. While the new make it produces is far from smoky, this small amount of peat gives it a distinctive character that has helped it become one of the best-selling malt whiskies in the world.

Lot 244

ARDBEG 17 YEAR OLD ISLAY SINGLE MALT 40% ABV / 70cl Located on the island’s rugged south coast, Ardbeg distillery represents the peatier end of the Islay spectrum. While it has endured some tough times, spending several years mothballed, the distillery has undergone a bit of a renaissance since being bought over by Glenmorangie and is now on a stable footing. While it still retains its signature sooty spirit, Ardbeg has also adopted its new parent company’s fondness for experimental cask finishes, arguably increasing its appeal.

Lot 2

DALMORE KING ALEXANDER III HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT 40% ABV / 70cl Dalmore have worked hard to position themselves as one of the world's foremost luxury whisky brands.

GLENMORANGIE 10 YEAR OLD GIFT PACK WITH 2 GLASSES HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT 40% ABV / 70cl Famous for their unique stills, each as tall as an adult giraffe, and their passion for innovation, Glenmorangie remains one of the best-selling single malts in the world.
