Lot 21

A GOOD CHINESE IMPERIAL ARCHAISTIC SPINACH-GREEN JADE INCENSE BURNER AND COVER 18TH CENTURY Carved in low relief to the exterior with archaistic masks, the stylised design divided by notched high-relief flanges with incised decoration, the squat body flanked by two handles worked as two-horned dragons suspending loose rings, the domed cover surmounted by a flared circular knop surrounded by three recumbent goats, the animals well-depicted with incised details to their spines and beards, all raised on three short feet shaped as animal paws issuing from the mouths of mythical beasts, taotie, the mottled spinach-green stone with a lustrous polish, 24.8cm across. (2) Provenance: formerly the collection of Sir John Buchanan-Jardine Bt; and then the Lawrence Collection of jades and hardstone carvings, purchased from Spink & Son prior to 1959. Sir John William Buchanan-Jardine, 3rd Baronet (1900-69) was Chairman of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Eighty-one Chinese works of art from his collection were exhibited at the Royal Academy Exhibition of 1935-36. Sotheby's held sales of his superb collection in the late 1940s. This incense burner was inspired by the prototype of the archaic bronze gui vessels of the Shang and Zhou periods. The bronze gui was a food container used for ancestral worship. It first appeared in ceramic form in the Neolithic period, and came to have an important role in traditional rituals. In the Ming and Qing periods, the archaic forms of early bronze ritual vessels were recreated in various materials, such as ceramic, lacquer and jade. The present jade censer is smaller in size than the original archaic bronze vessels. It was also used in a very different context, as an incense burner rather than a food container. The taotie refers to a two-eyed mask that appears on almost every Shang ritual bronze. The ancient belief was that the taotie mask represented a wanton spirit. However, modern scholars are divided in their opinions of what the motif really meant, or whether it had any meaning. To employ such a motif from antiquity indicated the revival fashions of the later periods. Cf. The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Jadeware (III), pp.83-84, no.71 for a related incense burner, which is part of a set.十八世紀 碧玉雕仿古三陽開泰紋蓋爐來源:John Buchanan-Jardine Bt紳士舊藏,勞倫斯珍藏玉石,1959年前購於Spink & Son。

Finished in special order Sunrise over Barley and Autumn Hides. Delectable with full Bentley History The Bentley Arnage was launched in 1998, replacing the Bentley Turbo which had offered sterling service for many years. Built by Bentley Motors in Crewe from 1998 to 2009, the Arnage and its Rolls-Royce sibling, the Silver Seraph, were introduced in the Spring of 1998 and were the first entirely new designs for the two marques since 1980, when the Silver Spirit and Mulsanne models had been introduced. The new Arnage was designed to be powered by a new state-of-the-art BMW V8 engine with Cosworth-engineered twin-turbochargers and was designated the Arnage Green Label. The Arnage Red Label was launched in October 1999 and, for a number of reasons, reverted back to Bentley power using the traditional V8 engine, with a displacement of 6,750cc.Finished in special order Sunrise with Barley and secondary Autumn Hide, this exceptional Arnage stands out from the crowd, not simply due to the stunning colour scheme but also its overall stunning condition. It was first registered in January 2000 with the Cherished Registration Number, BH 4 (no longer assigned). The extensive specification points towards a fastidious owner with many of the extra boxes ticked upon ordering, such as the Burr Walnut interior complemented by the discreet 'Flying Bs', the picnic tables, the matching veneered door panels, the extended seat runners, rear companion mirrors, rear hand straps, the tilt and slide sunroof and the Lambswool over-mats, with final touches such as the silver hip flask and four glasses, creating an air of elegance that only a Bentley can provide. Even the dual umbrellas, specified from new, still reside in the luggage compartment. Externally, the chrome grille, waist-rail motifs and fine-line detailing are subtle, yet lift the overall appearance without being obtrusive. It has just been serviced by Bentley Leicester and provided with a fresh MOT confirming the outstanding condition and continued fastidious ownership. There is little paperwork to accompany the Arnage due to minimal use on the Isle of Man, however the comprehensive service history is detailed as follows ;41 Miles – JCT 6006,044 Miles – JCT 60010,893 Miles – JCT 60013,714 – JCT 60017,535 – JCT 60018,795 – JCT 60034,790 – Starmar Bentley36,392 – Bentley LeicesterThe indicated mileage at the time of viewing was 36,461.These commanding cars offer an unprecedented level of comfort and effortlessly cover the miles in the most luxurious of settings, turning every journey into an occasion.
