*Michael Ayrton (1921-1975), TOREADOR Signed and dated 1940 u.r., watercolour, bodycolour and pen and ink 42 x 60cm Exhibited: Chichester, Festival Exhibition, The Tudor Room of the Bishop's Palace, 'The Continental Muse, British Painters in Europe from Turner to the Present Day', July 1992, no. 38. In 1938 Ayrton went to Paris with John Minton where they studied under Giorgio de Chirico before the impending war hastened their return to London. In the present work, with the pinky-blue hues and bullring imagery, Ayrton is clearly influenced by de Chirico. As Malcolm Yorke comments, this work and others like it are, 'remarkably escapist and sentimental considering their creator's political commitment and the war raging around him'. (See M. Yorke, The Spirit of Place, London, 1988, p.197). *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot. CONDITION REPORT: Not viewed out of glazed frame. Tiny spots of foxing by curtain to left side and on his right shoulder. No obvious major faults.
Derrick Latimer Sayer (1917-1992), 'UNIVERSITY OF NATIVE PLEASURE' Signed, inscribed with title and dated '67, mixed media 75 x 50cm; and two others by the same hand, mixed media 57 x 41cm (3) Born in 1917, Derrick Sayer trained at Chelsea School of Art under the aegis of Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland. This was followed by a period at Ben Nicholson's studio in Paris. With the same spirit of co-operative idealism as Nicholson and the St. Ives Group, Sayer founded the Mousehole Group Art School in 1936 in collaboration with George Lamborn and Guy Allen. Sadly, this venture was short-lived, but provided a perfect start that served him well as he put his graphic talent to excellent use for major advertising campaigns, record covers and book illustrations. During the time that he was producing commercial work, he showed with a variety of galleries including the Redfern, Leicester and Storran galleries, receiving thoughtful critical attention.
