A printed caption at the base of the photographer`s mount states `This photograph was taken with ONE exposure only`. Signed (`Arthur Conan Doyle`) in bold dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower white border of the image. A couple of very minor, light spots of foxing, VG It is possible that these photograph were created by one of the Crewe Circle, a group of six photographers led by the controversial medium William Hope (1863-1933). Following World War I support for the Crew Circle grew as the grieving relatives of those who lost their lives in the War sought a means of contacting their loved ones. The work of the photographers was investigated on several occasions, most notably by Harry Price on behalf of the Society for Physical Research. Price collected evidence that members of the Crew Circle were substituting glass plates bearing ghostly images in order to produce spirit photographs and, in 1922, published his findings. However, many ardent supporters spoke out on behalf of the Crew Circle, the most famous being Doyle. It is likely that Doyle signed these photographs as an attestation as to their authenticity.
