A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF AN OFFICIALMid Ming DynastyWell cast standing on a slightly flared rectangular plinth raised on shaped supports, wearing long flowing robes adorned at the front with a quatrelobed cartouche enclosing floral decoration, holding in his right hand a belt above his slightly rotund belly, his neck framed by a collar, gazing forward with his head crowned by an official's hat, traces of gilding remaining.25.6cm (10 2/16in) high.Footnotes:Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價明中期 銅文官像Published, Illustrated and Exhibited: Roger Keverne Ltd., Summer Exhibition, London, 2006, no.10展覽著錄:Roger Keverne Ltd.,《夏季展覽》,倫敦,2006年,編號10Such attire represented the typical dress code for civil officials of high rank. Following the sumptuary laws of 1391, which regulated Ming dynasty dress, the classical Chinese clothing traditions of the Tang and Song dynasties were revived. Tang and Song official costumes themselves can be traced even further back, to the Han dynasty. The long robe with wide sleeves, the sash embellished with beaded jewellery, the rectangular office plaque across the chest were all part of Han dynasty court apparel. One can, therefore, find a close similarity between traditional attires of Chinese court officials over many centuries. Nowhere can this be observed as clearly as on the larger-than-life stone figures of civil officials lining the spirit roads leading to their emperors' mausoleums. See Ann Paludan, The Chinese Spirit Road, New Haven and London, 1991, pl.142 a Tang example, pls 167- 8; two Song examples, pls 202, 205, 213, 228 and 230; several Ming examples.See a similar bronze figure of a eunuch, Ming dynasty, from the collection of Wang Shixiang, illustrated in Zi zhen ji: Wang Shixiang ji, Beijing, 2017, p.63.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

* CLAIRE HARKESS RSW (SCOTTISH B. 1970 - ), PASSING ISLANDS II watercolour on paper, signed 17cm x 20cm (excluding frame and mount) Mounted, framed and under glass. Multiple labels verso: including The Scottish Gallery, Claire Harkess RSW "Galapagos" (Exhibition) 4th - 28th June 2008 catalogue number 84 where sold. Other Scottish Gallery stock labels with title, medium etc and artist's label. Note: Claire Harkess was born in Ayr, Scotland, graduating from Glasgow School of Art in the early 1990s. In recent years her painting has taken her to fragile lands to study and interpret life on the edge. Antarctica, Outback Australia and St Kilda are all places where, in such extreme environments, survival is difficult and the balance of life is delicate. Harkess has also worked on the Galápagos Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of the Species’. This isolated volcanic outpost remained relatively untouched by man, evolving to become one of the World’s unique ecosystems. The balance present in nature is clearly communicated through Claire's paintings. Painting in watercolour or gouache offers a unique directness; the essential qualities of light and energy present in the natural world are the very essence of the medium itself. The delicacy of her palette and oriental economy of her mark-making creates a subtle tension representing a world that is ‘holding still’, giving a sense of freedom, spirit, time and place. Claire's work is exhibited at The Scottish Gallery, where her most recent highly successful solo show was in July 2020, and at other prestigious galleries around the UK.

A French emaille enamel decorated twin handled urn, late 19th century, attributed to E. Paris & Cie, Paris, of ovoid form with knopped rim, each handle above a lion's mask, 49cm high, 54cm wideBidders from the UK and outside of the European Union should be aware that additional import charges may applyThe highly renowned firm of Charles-Emile Paris specialised in the manufacture of crystal glass, enamelled and mosaic embellished products. The crystal making and enamelling firm was founded in 1827 or1829 at rue de Bercy by his father, Jean-Alexandre Paris, who was the jeweller goldsmith of the Palais Royal. In 1867 Charles-Emile Paris left the Parisian site due to the new law forbidding the emission of industrial smoke in the capital, and founded a new factory at Le Bourget (Seine) at the site of a Louis XV hunting lodge. The new plant was destroyed during the war of 1870 and ruined Charles-Emile Paris; he had to sell the land in order to rebuild the factory on the leased site. The business was successful and the number of employees grew steadily and subsequently a retail shop was opened at rue de Paradis in the 10th arrondissement of Paris in 1876It was a dynamic and innovative firm, which ensured its success. Among the most notable and prestigious of its achievements was the supply of enamels (1847) for the tomb of Napoleon at the Invalides, decorative mosaic enamels at the Casino de Monte-Carlo (1879), and winning a number of highly prestigious awards at the Paris International Exhibitions in 1867, 1878 and 1889 in various categories.
