Fibre pencil over colour offset on paper. Spot-mounted to mat and framed in artist's frame under glass. Signed and dated on the verso and signed and dated again on the stretcher. - With faint brown spots in places. With slight waterstains in the centre. The mounting from the verso slightly seeping through. All in all good. - Thomas Zipp's works are characterised by references to politics, popular culture, science, literature and philosophy. The result is the artist's questioning of our society and the disclosure of the psychogram of Western civilisation - personified here by the motorbike model of a Harley Davidson as an expression of man's spirit of development, the achievement of technical innovation and the power of free movement.

Lot 308

Matthias Koeppel. (1937 Hamburg). Entwurf - Senat vor Gropiusbau (II.). 1986/ 87. Öl auf Leinwand. 28 x 100 cm. - In sehr gutem Zustand. Panoramaansicht in nahezu veristischem Duktus und fein subtiler Tonalität, in frischer Farbigkeit. Provenienz: Privatsammlung Berlin, direkt vom Künstler erworben. Oil on canvas. Monogrammed and dated, titled on the verso on the stretcher and with further details of the work. Presented free-standing in artist's frame. - In very good condition. Panoramic view in almost veristic ductus and finely subtle tonality, colours fresh. - Provenance: Private collection Berlin, acquired directly from the artist. - This painting is a reduced version of the mural that has been in the Golden Hall of the Rathaus Schöneberg, Berlin since 2004. - The period from 1971 to 2003, when the divided city becomes a reunited metropolis that finally reinvents itself, offers Koeppel the ideal opportunity to capture the spirit of the times. Berlin is almost always his background. Our picture shows the former wasteland near the death zone at Gropius-Bau, between East and West Berlin, separated by the long strip of the Wall. The scene is intensified by the temporality; Koeppel chose this motif a few years before the fall of the Wall.
