The King’s statement reads, in full, ‘The idea of general peace among nations must be achieved, else the very existence of the civilized world has collapsed. In order for that idea to succeed, it is nonetheless essential that the various nations come to know, understand and respect one another, while retaining their individuality, in order to eliminate the frictions which inevitably occur among the various countries.’ Lightly laid down to a folio sheet. Together with George, Prince of Greece Autograph Statement Signed, Georges, Prince de Grece, Prince de Danemark, one page, folio, n.p., n.d., in French. The Prince writes, in full, ‘In order to ensure peace, we must all, great or small, have the same rights in the League of Nations, and the great Powers must treat the small nations in a spirit of equity and not of vested interest.’ Also including J. B. M. Hertzog (1866-1942) Prime Minister of South Africa 1924-39. Autograph Statement Signed, one page, folio, Geneva, 16th September 1930, in part, ‘The League is the response made by humanity to the appeal of nationalism for protection against war and its consequences. To thrive it must stand implanted in the heart of humanity…’ VG, 3 The statements were prepared for publication in the Pax Mundi book; an anthology of sentiments on peace published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. Between 1925 and 1932 many notable persons from around the world were asked to comment on the prospects of world peace and the volume included contributions from Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore and many others.
