This corpus of recently discovered meticulous botanical drawings that seem to have been executed purely for his own pleasure are of such quality and precision as to justify serious study and a reappraisal of his reputation. By the early 1920s his career as a designer was largely over. His ability to evoke style and spirit in his costume and stage designs led his obituarist writing in The Times (3 March 1925) to observe 'Wilhelm [Pitcher's pseudonym] excelled especially in rendering the spirit and detail of historical periods, but he had also an amusing skill in turning modern costumes to his fantastical purposes... to his imaginative gifts he added remarkable precision and firmness in execution..."
