* CLAIRE HARKESS RSW (SCOTTISH B. 1970 - ),POLAR BEARwatercolour on paper, signed, dated 1998 label verso26cm x 18cmMounted, framed and under glass.Label verso: Gallery 41, EdinburghNote 1: In 1998, Claire worked as Artist in Residence with The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. While at Edinburgh Zoo she was filmed as part of the BBC "Ex-S" series and a fascinating documentary about her work was broadcast in November of that year. This work is a portrait of a specific animal at Edinburgh Zoo and it's likely that many Edinburgh residents and visitors to the Zoo will recognise this animal..Note 2: Claire Harkess was born in Ayr, Scotland, graduating from Glasgow School of Art in the early 1990s. In recent years her painting has taken her to fragile lands to study and interpret life on the edge. Antarctica, Outback Australia and St Kilda are all places where, in such extreme environments, survival is difficult and the balance of life is delicate. Harkess has also worked on the Galápagos Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of the Species’. This isolated volcanic outpost remained relatively untouched by man, evolving to become one of the World’s unique ecosystems. The balance present in nature is clearly communicated through Claire's paintings. Painting in watercolour or gouache offers a unique directness; the essential qualities of light and energy present in the natural world are the very essence of the medium itself. The delicacy of her palette and oriental economy of her mark-making creates a subtle tension representing a world that is ‘holding still’, giving a sense of freedom, spirit, time and place. Claire's work is exhibited at The Scottish Gallery, where her most recent highly successful solo show was in July 2020, and at other prestigious galleries around the UK.

Lot 420

War Child Puzzle Path signed and dated 'Hewll99' (lower right) pencil, pen and wash 25.5 x 31.5cm, unframedFootnote: In 1988, aged just 20, comic artist, illustrator and animator, Jamie Hewlett co-created Tank Girl, the comic which would launch his career. In contrast to the hyper-sexualised and hyper-feminised heroines of mainstream comic books, Hewlett’s iconic protagonist was heavy drinking, hard talking and aggressively androgynous. The success of this creation was such that the initial comic spawned further graphic novels and even a film adaptation. The following decade, in 1998, alongside Blur frontman, Damon Albarn, Hewlett co-created Gorillaz, the world’s first, and most successful, cartoon band. Although Jamie Hewlett has claimed that drawing is just the placement of lines in the correct position, the spirit captured in each of his energetic, colourful and meticulously detailed, graphic creations suggests that there is something more profound at play. The present lot is thought to include an illustration of Gorillaz band member Murdoc Faust Niccals.

Lot 78

painted tin cut-out upon rustic wood base, signed to underside 37.5cm high overallFootnote: Born in the East End of London in 1939, it was Taplin’s relocation as a young child to Hereford that ignited his lifelong passion for nature and fascination with birds. Walking through countryside carved and divided geometrically by hedgerows, Taplin recalls finding a sparrow’s nest dotted with bright blue eggs,” I thought 'this is fantastic' and I think this was the turning point" he said. After moving back to London and briefly working as a gardener in Regent’s Park, Taplin indulged his love of birds by assuming the role of bird keeper at Regent’s Park. Upon observing the wildlife and the popularity of decoy ducks, in 1975 Taplin began carving the sculptural birds he is now famed for. A daily pilgrimage to Wivenhoe beach on the Essex Coast provides Taplin with the resources required for his sculptures. Using the flotsam and jetsam gifted from the waves to the shore, Taplin’s work exploits the natural weathering of driftwood to mimic the texture of feathers and to narrate the history of the material. Contributing to a natural cycle, Taplin’s use of foraged driftwood functions to connect the viewer to both sea and sky, whilst his simple, stylised forms evoke the simplicity and beauty of the natural world. Rather than attempting to capture the true likeness of his subjects, Taplin aims to instead express the very essence and spirit of the bird. Although he does not consider himself a “real artist”, Taplin’s work is highly sought after and is held in major collections including Tate Britain and the Royal Collection.
