An oak Arts & Crafts side cabinet, in the manner of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, the shallow, cavetto moulded top widely overhanging a pair of cupboard doors with pierced gilt metal and coloured glass panels depicting roses and loose ring handles on rectangular planished backplates, over a single full width drawer, raised on stile supports, 42 x 21in. (106.5 x 53.25cm.), 36¾in. (93.5cm.) high.* Condition: We believe this piece has either been reduced in height or has been subject to substantial alterations. The oak has a good, original surface and dull, unpolished patina, which is commensurate with a date to the early 20th century. However, the back boards have been replaced with satin walnut or similar and the drawer has also been reconstructed using the same wood (with an earlier oak front). The top sits on a ½in. piece of oak of a different colour to the rest of the piece, and this piece has not been finished with polish to the sides, so is a later addition. The metal panels have marked yellow surface staining, possibly due to nicotine. An attempy has been made to clean the left hand panel, showing the brighter silver nickel plating (or similar) beneath. The locks are English brass locks - stamped 'RC&S' within a crown and also 'Secure Lever' and 'Two Lever'. Glass is good, but the lower right flower to the RH door has a pale, rough patch to the glass surface. Small spirit stain to centre of drawer and a few small spirit spots to top. Small chip to surface of aok to back right corner of top. Three small pale spots to wood to right hand side of front. Water/damp staining to bottom of stile feet.
