The night before the shop closed, The Beatles selected pieces for themselves to wear and the next morning opened the doors to crowds massing outside and in true hippie spirit, told the waiting public to just help themselves to the rest. Paul McCartney said of it 'The nice thing was that we weren't too fussed when it didn't work out (...) It was great: giving the clothes to people who showed up on the day' (The Beatles Anthology, Cassell & Co, 2000, p296). CONDITION REPORT: Good condition. KRISHNA RAJA WADIYAR IV: (1884-1940) Maharaja of Mysore 1894-1940. An interesting T.L.S., Krishnaraja Wadiyar, six pages, 8vo, The Palace, Mysore, 8th October 1930, to Sir Stuart [Mitford Fraser], on his attractive colour printed stationery. The Maharaja thanks Sir Stuart for his letter of the 23rd 'It is with considerable interest that I read your views on the present political situation in India and on India's demand for self Government. All eyes are now focussed on the Round Table Conference to be held in London. I wish better counsels had prevailed and the Congress Party instead of making impossible proposals to the viceroy as a condition precedent to their entire entry into the Round Table Conference had actually participate in it. A party that wields such influence in the country might have co-operated with Lord Irwin who has been such a genuine sympathiser if India's aspirations.' Continuing, the Maharaja gives an insight into the role of Indian women in politics 'Two years ago who would have thought that the women of India proverbially shy and backward would develop such a public spirit? … Daughters of merchants dealing in foreign cloth have joined the boycott movement regardless of their father's ruin…For the first time in the history of Mysore two Indian ladies have been nominated this year as members of the Representative Assembly'. And further continuing 'The youth of India have become a most undisciplined lot. They are not under the control of parents nor are they amenable to the discipline of schools or colleges. Their whole time is devoted to politics and they are blindly led by the Congress leaders.' Concluding 'How happy I would have been had it been possible to welcome Lady Fraser and yourself as my guests during Dasara? I only hope it is a deferred pleasure and you will some day before long revisit India and come to Mysore where you spent the best period of your official career.' A letter of fine content. VGSir Stuart Mitford Fraser (1864-1963) British Officer of the Foreign and Political Department of the Government of India. Tutor to the Maharajas of Kolhapur and Bhavnagar, and later (1896-1902) tutor and guardian to the Maharaja of Mysore. The three Round Table Conferences of 1930-32 were organised by the British Government to discuss constitutional reforms in India. The present letter was written a month before the First Round Table Conference of November 1930 - January 1931.

The basis for this incredible custom rifle is a Winchester Model 1885 Falling Block Hi-Wall frame. Frame was fitted with a heavy 28" full octagon barrel and chambered for the U.S. .30-40 Krag cartridge. The barrel is beautiful rust blued. Angelo Bee has engraved the breech of the barrel going forward 2". The muzzle is fitted with a gold line. Front sight is a Spirit level adjustable and no provision for rear sight but rear of barrel is tapped and filled for a scope block. Angelo gave the frame the full engraving treatment with border scrolls and floral. Left panel featuring mountain range and gold inlay hawk catching a rabbit with talons out (popular A. Bee design). The top and back a frame are likewise beautifully scroll engraved with stippled background. Right side has a panel with wood scene with solid gold fox and partridge inlay. Both side panels are outlined in gold. Beautiful scroll engraving at base of case colored lever. Similar engraving at top and bottom arms of the silver plated Swiss heavy metal buttplate. Forend is custom hand checkered with ebony forend tip and a case colored palm rest base is installed. Swiss style buttstock features beautiful grain. The same custom checkering at pistol grip and rosewood inlay at pistol grip. Tang sight has been fitted. This rifle is in as new condition inside and out, as built, retaining all of the wood and metal finish. It is housed in a French fitted hard luggage case with the following accessories: walnut base palm rest, custom black composite checkered Winchester Swiss style buttplate and two extra levers (both case colors) in two different Schuetzen designs. Installed lever is standard model. The original purchaser spared no expense in having this custom rifle built, finished and engraved by true masters. The cost to build this rifle today would be well into the five figures and is arguably the most handsome Hi-Wall we have ever handled albeit custom.
