A RARE LARGE PALE GREEN JADE 'LANDSCAPE' MOUNTAINQianlongThe boulder of irregular mountain form, deftly carved in various levels of relief depicting a bearded sage, standing on a rocky ledge looking towards a young attendant reaching carrying a tray with offerings, before a further attendant preparing the Elixir of Longevity on a cauldron, all set amidst a mountainous landscape dotted with pine trees, overhanging wutong, leafy shrubs and a distant pavilion, the stone of even pale green tone with faint russet veining. 18.1cm (7 1/8in) high.Footnotes:清乾隆 玉雕松蔭高士圖山子Provenance: Christie's London, 4 April 1979, lot 76James Basil Wilson and Julia Wilson, and thence by descentIn 1945, James Basil Wilson returned from The Second World War having served with the Gurkhas. He married Julia Burke in 1949 and they moved to London. James started working for Iron and Steel Exporters and later that year, he was offered the chance to set up an office Hong Kong, so they moved there and set up home. The business was successful, they loved Hong Kong and they lived the life of ex-patriates to the full. They swam, played golf, made friends and indulged their passion for fast cars, competing in amateur road races. Julia claimed to have won at the first Macau Grand Prix. As well as enjoying the pastimes of the culture they brought with them, they developed an enduring love for China, Chinese people, Chinese food and Chinese art. With a growing family, they returned to England in 1957. They brought with them the pieces they had bought in Hong Kong and James made many trips to Hong Kong and continued to build their collection throughout the following decades mainly from dealers in London. Deftly carved, this boulder is notable for its fine carving, including even the smoke-clouds arising from the stove used to prepare tea or perhaps an elixir. The large jade stone was sourced from the areas of Khotan and Yarkand, which became an available source of jade after the Qing conquest of the north-western territories in the mid-18th century, allowing superior quality and larger jade stones to be sent to the jade workshops. The Qianlong emperor instructed that jade boulders and carved panels should carry the spirit of paintings by famous past masters. It is recorded that a number of classical paintings from the emperor's own collection were ordered to be reproduced in jade, such as the well-known painting entitled 'Travellers in the Mountain' by Guan Tong of the Five Dynasties (907-960 AD). The popularity of such jade boulders carved with mountainous scenes is attested by a number of related examples illustrated in Jasper Wares of Qing Dynasty Collected by the Palace Museum and Mansi, Beijing, 2014, nos.107-112. See also another example of a green jade boulder with a design of a sage enjoying the sight of a waterfall, Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, with a poem by the Qianlong emperor, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade, 8, Beijing, 2011, pp.128-129, no.96. The precision of the carver's workmanship, creating particularly crisp high-relief carving in some areas, and the imaginative interpretation from the outset of an asymmetric shape, is such that one can easy imagine this boulder adorning a desk in one of the Imperial palaces. It would foster contemplative introspection, with the beholder happily losing himself in the twists and turns of the rustic rocky pathway and the groves of old gnarled pine. The present lot is replete with auspicious meanings; not only the sage with two attendants preparing possibly an elixir of longevity, typical of Daoist hermits, but also the pine trees and cranes on the reverse. Cranes symbolise longevity and peace, and pine trees also symbolise longevity as well as endurance and steadfastness.See a related pale green and russet jade boulder with sages among a mountain path, Qing dynasty, illustrated in The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the Ch'ing Court, Taipei, 1997, pp.156-157, no.47. Compare also the present carving to a group of jade mountains carved with landscape motifs from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade 8, Beijing, 2011, nos.95-98.See also a related pale green jade 'Immortals' boulder, Qianlong, which was sold at Bonhams London, 5 November 2020, lot 158.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Full title: An exceptionally large Chinese famille rose 'Emperor Yang' dish, YongzhengDescription:Dia.: 55 cmÊ Provenance: A Belgian private collection.Ê Ref.: Emperor Yang of the Sui dynasty (___, r. 606-18) is known for many achievements, such as linking the Yellow and Yangzi Rivers with the man-made Grand Canal, leading successful military campaigns expanding the Sui territory, and being accomplished in the arts. Despite those, Emperor Yang is also considered to have brought disaster to the country and misery to the people late in his life with his unwise rule and decadent and debauched lifestyle with his concubines. In the West Park, outside Luoyang, his consorts (wives who ranked lower than his primary wife, the empress) often organised his concubines to do equestrian performances and variety shows to entertain the emperor and please his inflated ego.Ê One of the best known of these vignettes was the procession of Lady Wang Zhaojun (___, c. 52 – c. 15 BCE) in a moonlit night. He eventually sent her off by horseback in a procession to marry a Central Asian tribal chieftain.) The elderly Emperor Yang is often depicted enthusiastically observing his elegant court ladies showing off their riding skills in the spirit of Lady Wang, while anticipating further antics to follow.Ê This scene has often been mistaken as "female generals of the Yang family'(____) by many art historians. After the yams had been harvested and stored, because they were so powerful, they could not be eaten until all three ceremonies had been performed in sequence. The carving represents a female spirit. It was one of two representing the female spirit Hameiyau or Sanggriyau that was set up on a platform in front of a basket containing yams and decorated with shell ornaments, hair from clan members, and, attached to a headband, two bags holding nuts, fish, meat, and eggs. During the ensuing ceremonies which lasted until dawn, it was believed that the two figures danced with each other. When the carvings were put away, the food from the headband bags was distributed to women to bring about success in fishing. The facial features, breasts, navel, and vagina are shown as geometric forms in high relief on this figure. The other designs probably represent body painting.

Andalusian School, Circle of MATIAS DE ARTEAGA (Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real, 1633 - Seville, 1703), 17th century."The Annunciation".Oil on canvas.Retouching.Repainting and restorations.Measurements: 81 x 102 cm; 105.5 x 120 cm (frame). The spatial complexity that the theme of the Annunciation denotes here, making the pedestrian architectural plane coexist with the celestial one, presents clear concomitants with the way in which Matias de Arteaga treated the biblical episodes. It is therefore part of the Sevillian Baroque, in Arteaga's circle. The main scene is set in an interior in which, on the right hand side, the Virgin kneels before a lectern. A vase of lilies, a symbol of Marian purity, stands between her and the archangel who brings her the good news. Saint Gabriel points upwards, where God the Father and the Holy Spirit burst forth in a burst of golden glory. In the background, the urban architecture is depicted, based on sober, perfectly delineated arcades. A Spanish Baroque painter and engraver of the Sevillian school, Matías de Arteaga y Alfaro was able to capture and interpret the dual influence of Murillo and Valdés Leal with his own personality. The son of the engraver Bartolomé Arteaga, while still a child his family moved to Seville, where he trained in his father's studio and in contact with Murillo, whose influence reveals his early work together with that of Valdés Leal, who settled in Seville the same year that Arteaga passed his master painter's examination in 1656. In 1660 he was among the founding members of the celebrated drawing academy promoted by Murillo, among others, of which he served as secretary between then and 1673. In 1664 he joined the Hermandad de la Santa Caridad brotherhood and two years later the Sacramental del Sagrario brotherhood of Seville cathedral, for which he produced a number of works. Around 1680 he is also recorded as working as an appraiser of paintings. He died in 1703, and the inventory of his estate at his death reveals a wealthy lifestyle that included an important library and an engraving studio, as well as over 150 paintings, almost half of which were of religious subjects. Among them were four series of the Life of the Virgin, some of which were expressly said to contain architectural views, such as those in the present work and those in the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville. The most characteristic feature of his peculiar style is precisely these series of always religious subjects, set in broad landscapes and architectural perspectives taken from prints. Arteaga is represented in the aforementioned Sevillian museum, various Sevillian churches including the cathedral and the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, among others.
Andalusian school of the late 17th century."Holy Family".Oil on canvas. In its original canvas. It presents repainting and restorations.Measurements: 101 x 136 cm.In this canvas it is represented the Holy Family with the Child giving his hand to his mother, placed to his right. To his left appears the figure of Joseph holding the child by the arm, and carrying a rod in his right hand. Above them is the space of glory, with a golden background and bordered by clouds, and in the centre is the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, flying above their heads. In the true sense of the expression, the Holy Family is a much more restricted group than Mary's kin. It includes only the closest relatives of the Child Jesus, i.e. mother and grandmother or mother and nurturing father. In both cases, whether it is St. Anne or St. Joseph who carries him, it is a group of three figures. The group including St Joseph with Mary and the Child is most commonly understood as the Holy Family. This motif became popular in the Renaissance, although the germ already existed in the Nativities of the Middle Ages. At that time, however, devotion to the Holy Family did not yet exist, as the theme spread mainly through the art of the Counter-Reformation, which encouraged its cult. Within the iconography of Joseph, Mary and Jesus, this canvas belongs to the type depicting the two Trinities. It was a frequent theme in the 17th century, especially in France and the Low Countries, and represents the earthly Trinity placed under the protection of the heavenly Trinity.

Visscher, a.m.o. The author, born at Amsterdam about 1585, died there in April 1656, and buried at Alkmaar, was a member of the Mennonite Waterlander (Toren) congregation at Amsterdam. He published - together with his brother Dirk - a large number of writings, partly because he was forced to earn his living in this way, partly also because he felt an inner call to do so. - Lacking the following plates (following Visser's numbering): 1a, 1b, 1c (?), 54a, 68a, 103, 149-152, 157, 157a, 278, 279, 298a, 354, 355, 357bis, 358bis, 359bis, 363bis, 364bis, 365bis, 373a, 402 which include also 4 (of 5) maps, and possibly 386 to 397.
