Harry Schaare (New York, Arizona, 1922 - 2008) "Octave Chanute Working on Glider" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 21c Octave Chanute Air Mail stamp issued March 29, 1979. Though flight was considered folly by the common man since time began, by 1893, it was considered a feasible endeavor by scientists. At that time, a spirit of cooperation among aeronautical researchers gave rise to remarkable scientific advances, both theoretical and practical. This attitude of free exchange and cooperation, pervading both Europe and the United States, was largely the work of one man, Octave Chanute. It was Chanute who schooled aviation students on the experiments and inventions of their predecessors and on the theory of flight in general. He helped them build on what was already known about man's search for flight and encouraged them to further expand man's knowledge of aeronautics. His assistance was greatly welcomed, for Chanute was a reputable scientist, a renowned civil engineer of penetrating ability. His innovative attitudes and profound scope led him to be known as the leader in a new age of aeronautical development. He firmly believed that the glider held the answer to man's dream of flight, and history would bear out the wisdom of his theories during the Wright Brothers first glider experiments on the sand dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In 1893, most people felt that flight, in anything but a balloon or a dirigible, was impossible. But Chanute, and many other people from the scientific community, knew that one day man would achieve powered flight. Image Size: 17.5 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 21.75 x 17.5 in. Unframed. (B05887)

Frederick (Fred) Cecil Jones RBA (1891-1966)"Hull"Signed and inscribed, mixed media, 27cm by 37.5cmFrederick Cecil Jones was a Yorkshire painter, etcher, and art teacher who produced extraordinarily detailed townscapes of his native county, that capture the spirit of time and place.Jones was born in Bradford, the son of artist Maud Raphael Jones. After a brief period at Bradford College of art, in 1916 Jones enlisted into the army where his artistic skills were quickly utilised. He served for the remainder of the war as a reconnaissance artist on the Western Front, earning the nickname ‘Detail Jones’ for his ability to precisely render even the finest details of his subjects.Returning to his West Yorkshire home after the War, he continued to hone his skills in panoramic drawing, capturing the towns and cities of Northern England with acutely observed detail. However, Jones did not just focus his powers of observation on landscape and architecture, he put people at the heart of his paintings which are often busting with life. He manages to capture small details of everyday life with a gentle, benevolent humour that makes his work so engaging; in a crowded shopping street a small child squirms in his mother’s arms, a shopper bends to peer into a window, and woman rummages for a lost item in her handbag.Jones returned to his artistic education, attending Leeds College of Art part-time between 1930 and 1935, and married fellow artist Ethel Mary Kitson. Whilst continuing to paint, he taught at Pudsey School of Art, where he became Deputy Principal. He would go on to exhibit both locally and nationally, showing at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. His paintings are now held in numerous collections such as Tate Britain and Wakefield Art Galleries. Condition report: Slight time staining to the paper. The work has slightly dropped in the frame to the top right. Vertical crease to the centre of the sky approximately 2cm in length. Superficial surface scratch to the right of the sky above the masts approximately 2cm in size. Not examined out of the frame.
