λ PAUL NASH (BRITISH 1889-1946) SEAGULL EYE WIND WAVES Wood Printed with artist's address to Bourlet & Sons Ltd., London label (to underside) 52 x 40cm (20¼ x 15½ in.) In the avant-garde English journal Axis no 8 for Early Winter 1937, Paul Nash's object Burnt Offering was reproduced - one of the few images we have of his objects, once quite numerous but now virtually all disappeared. Burnt Offering seems to be a composite object, with what appears to be a turned wooden finial (upside down) or door handle partially destroyed by fire fixed to a concrete or stone base with markings and encrustations that make it look as if it had long been submerged in the sea.Nash's objects were a major presence in the surrealist exhibitions in England in the 1930s. At the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries he showed two objects - untitled, but described as "Designed Object", and one "Found Object Interpreted" whose medium was given as "Vegetable Kingdom" (Marsh Personage). Burnt Offering was also shown at the London Gallery exhibition "Surrealist Objects and Poems" (1937). As Michel Remy says, "Hardly any exhibit has survived from the exhibition", (so far as we know). True to the complexity of the surrealist interest in the object, fifteen categories of object were listed in the catalogue; in "Surrealist objects" Nash exhibited Homes without Hands and Forest; in "Found Objects" Long-gom-pa ("a five-branch root named after a Tibetan runner famous at the time" (Remy); in "Found Objects Interpreted" Goodness How Sad, Encounter of Wild Stones, Not Cricket and Nest of Wild Stones; in "Objects Collages", Aquarium and Only Egg; in "Oneiric Objects" Tree Man; in "Objects for Everyday Use" (with Margaret Nash) Basket for Found Objects; Burnt Offering in "Perturbed Objects"; Moon Aviary in "Constructed Objects".For the Cambridge University Arts Society "Exhibition of Surrealism" (1937) he showed three: Only Egg, The Nest of Wild Stones and Long-gom-pa. In the same exhibition Eileen Agar showed Le père Ubu. In 1938, following the great success of the London International Surrealist Exhibition, Nash showed several works, including Objets aux champs and Objets balancés (probably photographs rather than actual objects, the latter possibly Poised objects [Causey 1973 pl. 27].)Of the twenty-five or so known and named objects, most were dismantled, scrapped, "not made" or have simply melted away. Forest from Roland Penrose's collection (trees made from glove stretchers) and Only Egg "seem to be the only two objects by Nash to have survived", according to the catalogue raisonné. As the Tate catalogue entry for Nash's important photomontage/drawing Swanage, c. 1936 says, "Almost none of these objects survives except as depicted in Nash's work, though he apparently continued to keep and collect objects until his death".It is therefore extraordinarily difficult to place the object in question with any certainty although there is plenty of leeway for the existence of a hitherto unknown "found object" - or possibly "found object interpreted". A typewritten label on the back of the object gives the title "Seagull Eye Wind Waves" and an address for Paul Nash: Whitecliffe Farm, near Swanage, which is where he lived from October 1934 until he moved to the centre of Swanage in 1935. In March 1936 the Nashes left Swanage. So the object (or its collection) would date from roughly the same period as Marsh personage, his first found object, which in some respects, especially visually, it resembles.Whereas Marsh Personage and Long-gom-pa are clearly found "natural" objects, (the latter furze-wood, the former driftwood, "salvaged from a stream", and the first of the found "vegetable" objects), Seagull Eye Wind Waves is "interpreted" and worked on. It is composed of three pieces of wood, each with a strong character: the thickly gnarled outer rim of a hollow tree, which embraces a curved form, perhaps once part of a piece of furniture. This has been carved to enhance its resemblance to outspread seagull wings, and the tip of the top wing becomes a bird head; through a hole in the top of this shape runs a thin, antler-like branch. Perhaps this worn forked stick that has pierced the wooden curve was encountered thus in a curious natural formation, and the curve was then interpreted as wings and the bird's head, crudely carved. Gashes and striations in the side of the wooden base, some circling knots in the wood, some indicating the lines of a torso, must belong to the same intervention. It might have been worked by Nash, or found by him as a piece of rough carving, a kind of primitive interpretation by an unknown hand, with a sense of the phallic and sexual suggestions in the lump of wood and its odd impaling. This would be wholly in line with surrealist taste and there are plenty of examples of such finds. For example the construction made by an aliéné, (a frame filled with broken scissors and other sharp implements) found and exhibited by André Breton. This rural find by Nash is in line with his profound love of the natural world and its innumerable forms. He wrote in Axis (January 1935) "...I find I still need partially organic features to make my fixed, conceptual image. I discern among natural phenomena a thousand forms which might, with advantage, be dissolved in the crucible of abstract transfiguration; but the hard cold stone, the rasping grass, the intricate architecture of trees and waves, or the brittle sculpture of a dead leaf - I cannot translate altogether beyond their own image, without suffering in spirit. My aim in symbolical representation and abstraction, although governed by a purpose with a formal ideal in view, seeks always to give life to a conception within the formal shell..." In my opinion Seagull Eye Wind Waves is a found interpreted object by Paul Nash.  Professor Dawn AdesCausey, Andrew and Eates, Margot Paul Nash Paintings and Watercolours Tate 1975Causey, Andrew Paul Nash's Photographs, Document and Image Tate 1973Evans, Myfanwy "Paul Nash 1937" Axis no 8 Early Winter 1937Exposition internationale du surréalisme Exb. cat. Korea 1950-54, unnamed as issued; Coronation 1953, unnamed as issued; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 3rd issue, coinage head (JX 135923 G. F. Wakeham. P.O. H.M.S. Mull of Kintyre.) mounted as worn; together with the recipient’s H.M.S. Ajax and H.M.S. Exeter Chilean Medal of Gratitude 1939, presented by the Chilean Municipality of Concepción for the Earthquake of 24 January 1939, bronze, an officially named later issue, the obverse featuring the Eagle coat of arms of Concepción, ‘Municipalidad de Concepción Chile’ around, the reverse inscribed ‘Gratitud a Marinos “Exeter” y “Ajax” Terremoto del 24-1-39.’, and named ‘C. F. Wakeham HMS Exeter’, light contact marks, good very fine (11) £800-£1,000 --- Charles Frederick Wakeham, a shop assistant from Brentford, Middlesex, was born on 4 February 1916. He attested into the Royal Navy as a Boy on 23 June 1931 and served in H.M.S. Exeter from 31 October 1936. Whilst serving in the 8th Cruiser Squadron on the South America Squadron, Exeter assisted with the humanitarian mission following the devastating earthquake at Concepción, Chile, on 24 January 1939. The earthquake, the deadliest in Chile’s history, measured 8.3 on the Richter scale and led to a death toll of approximately 28,000, and around 95% of the town’s buildings were completely destroyed. A medal was struck to be awarded to the crews of H.M.S. Exeter and H.M.S. Ajax, but owing to the outbreak of the Second World War, the majority of the unnamed medals were never issued. However, in March 2017, a second named issue was awarded to surviving crew members who had not received the earlier award. ‘Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, H.M.S. Exeter, still on the South America Squadron, under Rear-Admiral Henry Harwood, was heavily engaged against the Graf Spee on 13 December 1939. Just five minutes after the start of the action, an 11-inch shell burst alongside the British ship, killing torpedo tubes crews. A minute later she received a direct hit on “B” turret which put its two 8-inch guns out of action. Splinters swept the bridge, killing or wounding all but three of the officers and ratings standing there. The Captain escaped and, finding the bridge out of action and the wheel-house communications wrecked, he made his way aft to the fight the ship from there. As he did so, Exeter received two more direct hits from 11-inch shells forward ... The Exeter was still receiving punishment, although it was at this stage of the battle that the light cruisers were taken in and out with such skill, striking the enemy with their full weight whenever he turned to tackle the largest of the British cruisers. Two more 11-inch shells hit the Exeter, causing further casualties and extensive damage. One entered the hull and started a fierce fire between the decks. The other put the foremost turret and its two 8-inch guns out of action. It was on the occasion of these hits that the spotting aircraft reported she had completely disappeared in smoke and flame, and it was feared that she had gone. However, she emerged and re-entered the action. In doing so the men of the Exeter proved again the indomitable spirit of the Royal Navy. Their ship was badly stricken. Two of the three turrets were out of action, leaving no guns forward. She had a 7 degrees list and was down by the head. All her compasses had been smashed, and the Captain was handling his ship with the aid of a small boat’s compass. In these circumstances she altered course towards the enemy and fired her torpedoes ... The Exeter, gradually dropping astern, fought on until she had nothing left to fight with. At about 7.30 a.m. her sole remaining turret was flooded. Ten minutes later she turned to the south-east and slowly limped away, making necessary running repairs as she went ... Exeter made her way to the Falkland Islands, where she underwent repairs until January 1940, before she could undertake the return voyage to the U.K. Meanwhile, her casualty return spoke volumes: five officers and 56 ratings killed, three ratings died of wounds, and three officers and 17 ratings otherwise wounded. So, too, the resultant awards to her gallant ship’s company: a C.B., two D.S.Os, seven D.S.Cs, three C.G.Ms, 17 D.S.Ms and 18 “mentions”.’ (The King’s Cruisers, by Norman Holman, refers). Appointed Petty Officer on 6 November 1942, Wakeham saw later Second World War service in H.M.S. Glenarn, H.M.S. Grebe, H.M.S. Cleopatra, H.M.S. St. Angelo, H.M.S. Effingham, H.M.S. Druid and H.M.S. Caroline, as well as other shore establishments. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 3 February 1949, after having re-enlisted to complete his pension on 14 May 1946. Post-War, he served in Malaya and Korea and was awarded the 1953 Coronation medal. Pensioned to shore on 8 March 1956, he died in Plymouth, aged 77, on 6 February 1993. Sold with copied service papers; a quantity of original related photographs, including several of the recipient in uniform and in later life wearing his medals; the original menu card for the Corporation of London’s Guildhall luncheon held in honour of the officers and men of H.M.S. Exeter on 23 February 1940; original newspaper cuttings relating to the battle; the 50th anniversary edition of Memories of the Battle of the River Plate containing contributions from the recipient; his named ‘Crossing the Equator’ parchment whilst serving in H.M.S. A.L.S., Le Dr. Souberbielle, one page, 4to, Paris, 27th April 1846, to [Etienne] Cabet, in French. Souberbielle states that, if his health would have allowed him, he would have called on Cabet personally to express the satisfaction he always feels upon reading their newspapers 'par l'esprit de justice et de verite qui le caracterisent' (Translation: 'because of the spirit of justice and truth that characterises it') and continues 'Mais celui d'aujourd'hui surpasse tous les autres, par les articles qu'il contient, et les reflexions judicieuses dont vous les accompagnez. Le bien qu'il produira parmi le peuple est inappreciable, il lui servira de breviaire ou de regle de conduite' (Translation: 'But today's paper surpasses all the others, by the articles it contains, and the judicious reflections with which you accompany them. But it is above all the picture so fully developed of the benefits of the Christian religion preached by Christ which fills the soul with consolation and hope. I regard this article as an indication of the outline of the work you intend to publish on the Christian religion; it adds another honourable title to your journal: to that of Populaire, we must add Christian morality, which rightfully belongs to it. This is what everyone will see with satisfaction. The good it will produce among the people is inestimable; it will serve as a breviary or a rule of conduct'). Some light age wear and a few minor stains and small tears (one repaired with old tape to the verso) to the lower edge, not affecting the signature. The substantial, and often amusing, correspondence covers a wide range of subjects, including Steadman's work, in part, 'Many thanks for your letter and your marvellous enthusiasm. I am very happy that Cape & your good self are prepared to take me on with a project that hardly has any bones yet.....I doubt if I will begin Leonardo for 2 or 3 months but that does not prevent me reading about my subject and making notes which is how I set about the book on Freud' (18th March 1980), 'It's fascinating sitting in spots where the old boy [Leonardo da Vinci] might have sat. I was unable to lie on his bed or use the secret tunnel used by Francois I to visit him daily' (25th April 1981), ' "Bloody good!!" he said when he caught sight of the first drawing. "How many more are there?" "How many do you want?" "That depends" "On what?" "How many disciples turn up - can you manage another eleven - No problem' (31st August 1982), 'If he can sell 5000 copies there must be another 50,000 who would buy it if they only knew about it - at least. There is a huge army of committed fans over there [America] but I don't think they know the book exists. All I know is when I did a signing the queue went down the street - New York & West coast. Maybe they were all my fans and there aren't any more but do you believe that. Anyway, one of these days we'll blast through the bullet proof barrier & wonder why we worried' (21st December 1984), 'When Glasgow Art Gallery asked for copies of "I Leonardo" to sell during the course of my exhibition there, they were informed that you are now completely out of the 2nd edition. Surely it is worth a reprint even for this country only' (3rd May 1985), '...[I] have been asked to front a T.V. show on our attitudes to animals (J. G. Ballard, Brian Aldiss etc to be interviewed) I've just been to a bullfight, so I'm on dodgy ground' (28th September 1995). 'I will be researching the ways of cannibals - where they were - who they ate - who tasted best and what their favourite sauces are. Did they have head chefs - table manners - religious symbolism & belief in the powers allotted to various parts of the body......Are we in fact missing a vital part of our diets which no amount of lamb or pig can assuage?.....It's a wide & wonderful subject Tom, and in the metaphysical sense we act like cannibals today in this dog eat dog society of ours' (19th October 1995), 'I have read The Mildenhall Treasure - it is a fine TRUE tale of trust and paranoic avarice. Though, Butcher's wife knew. I love the descriptive atmospherics as much as [Roald] Dahl's grasp of human nature. It could be special, but why, I ask myself am I illustrating Dahl, when I could be hurling myself into Rabelais' (16th June 1996), 'I was thrilled to hear from you again. We have now reorganised the answering machines especially for you so that if you want to sing a song, tell me a story, or recite a piece of concrete poetry, you know I will hear it in future' (n.d., although 1996), 'Two things in defence of the "Snags". Defence one: Children love repetition. Defence two: Childrem don't recognise sophistication; only the inherent spirit of fun, the game itself played out between parent & child. I know. It has been tried out on a nursery school full of children and they ask for more. Defence three even: It is a great way to learn punctuation & a wonderful way to read pictures....' (18th June 1996), 'I am in search of magic - in search of Roald Dahl. What made him tick?' (26th November 1996), 'Over the last few months I have been doing some strange but intriguing, and funny!, pictures in the evenings on my knee (on paper of course) which I call my knee jobs. They seem like the basis for a book though I don't quite know how or why' (6th January 1997), 'Cannibals at the moment are rife in the world of publishing, literart meat-eaters, retail/wholesale packagers, remainderers of books which are in their prime, even 'Animal Farm' which is No. 3 in the best 100 books of the 20th century - trashed because 'its sale has gone down to a trickle' and who, I wonder, is prepared to admit blame?......Unless the book smells like a Body Shop and leaps off the shelf to bite you up the arse, what chance do new books have, except one on cannibals who might like a piece of arse for supper' (19th January 1997), 'I hope that our chat yesterday settled the final touches for our collaboration to reincarnate one of Roald Dahl's wonderful true stories' (29th April 1999), 'Here is something to get your teeth into. The spider's mouth is the hole at the back of Dahl's chair - it needs my cryptic explanation' (n.d.), 'I have avoided planning new booksm but I have not been idle.....I have been involved in a modern dance based on the last years of Picasso....I have done the centenary portrait of T. S. Eliot for The Poetry Society celebration in September. That led to a curiosity to see how I could portray his face in paint & I completed 6 paintings of his visage. He has a strange face......Channel 4 are keen to do a film about my Welsh speech based on the 'BOYO' tapestry and I am making a 10 minute short based on a conversation I invented between Marcel Duchamp & Luis Bunuel......I have always felt that the people who do well out of my book signings are the book shops since I give more of a performance that a mere 'Jeffrey Archer' type signing' (n.d., although 1993). Several of the letters are illustrated with a small caricature alongside the signatures. Some very light, minimal age wear, VG, 51Tom Maschler (1933-2020) British publisher who, from 1960, was head of the publishing company Jonathan Cape for more than three decades. Lot 1124

SAND GEORGE: (1804-1876) French novelist. An excellent autograph manuscript signed, George Sand, thirty pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (1872), in French. Sand’s manuscript, with various corrections and deletions, is written in the wake of the publication of Hugo’s collection of poems L’Annee terrible and states, in part, ‘Voici un poete sublime, le poete de la France. Here is a sublime poet, the poet of France. He is truly the voice of the party, and that is why in speaking of him we feel that we are addressing France itself of which he is the soul and the expression, the terrible heartbreak, the sovereign organ……I feel for him something more than admiration, I feel that I love him…..When the poet without rival today mounts the winged steed to question heaven about the destinies of earth, he strips away his real personality, he forgets his own name, he spiritualises himself, he is the thinker and the poet, he exercises his priesthood, he plays his role, he breaks with custom, he despises good tone, he goes beyond good taste, he uses his right which is to rise as far as a thought can rise above a situation, an aspiration above a fact, a will above an obstacle…..He has the sacred delirium of the pythonis, it rises to the manifestation of the spirit released from everything that weighs on us. He takes a place of which no one can be jealous, since no one would have dared to take it, and that no one can challenge him since he alone can occupy it…….Having said this once and for all and this divine pride accepted as a pretension, not legitimate in the poet in general but legitimate in this one, let us see if the lucidity is to be the height of the emotion and if this inspired seer, who seems to pierce the unknown, has the clear vision of the known things……yes and no. Yes, from the point of view of eternal philosophy; from the immediately historical point of view, no……his true name would be the passionate one, because everything is passion with him: hatred and love, gentleness and anger, indignation and pity; his visual organ is made of passion like his intellectual sense; his mind has the faculty of expanding to the point of embracing the universe in a gigantic embrace, and from then on everything expands and becomes colossal in his appreciation……of a fly he makes a monster, of an ant an elephant…..there is a third voice that the genius of the antithesis has not deigned to hear: it is the right voice……when in spite of oneself we remain standing between the two corpses, should we treat one as a martyr and the other as a murderer? They slit each other’s throats, both martyrs or both assassins, there is no need to say……he did not with his usual energy denounce the leaders and members of this band; he was content to say that he did not approve of themhe only had cries of anger against the repression and cries of pity only for the infamous people who tried to destroy Paris after having dishonoured.his spirit had a failure of light, the stars certainly did!......OWING TO LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE SALEROOM THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOR THIS LOT CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED.Please contact IAA Europe directly for further information.

VORONOFF SERGE: (1866-1951) Russian-French surgeon who gained fame for his technique of grafting monkey testicle tissue on to the testicles of men for purportedly therapeutic purposes in the 1920s and 30s. A.L.S., Dr S. Voronoff, one page, 8vo, Rue Castiglione, Paris, 6th October 1920, to Monsieur Bertelli, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Continental, in French. Voronoff states that a friend had given him a summary of Bertelli's articles in the New York American following their conversations, and continues to remark 'Tout dementi d'autres journaux ne peuvent concerner vos articles qui correspondent a l'esprit de l'expose que je vous ai fait' (Translation: 'Any denial from other newspapers cannot concern your articles which correspond to the spirit of the presentation I made to you'). With blank integral leaf. Some light creasing and minor age wear to the edges, about VG

THOMAS DYLAN: (1914-1953) Welsh poet. An exceptional autograph manuscript, unsigned, of the poem To Others Than You, three pages (separate leaves, written to the rectos only), 8vo, Laugharne, 5th June 1939. The working manuscript, with a number of corrections and deletions, comprises several versions of the poem and offers a unique insight into Thomas's creative process before deciding on the final form of the poem. The drafts are simply entitled Poem and the first variant begins with the line 'Friend my enemy I call you out', which Thomas retains in the final version, although continues with several significant differences, in part, 'You with a dud bad dud coin in your socket/ Try not to pass it palm it/ Who tries to palm its gleam on me the glint on me/ were once my golden friend…..whose/ your pursed eye has a bad coin in it/ My enemies, my friends, my friends/ (refrain:) My friends are enemies on stilts’ and also includes several lines which did not appear in the final text (‘You with a swan-enamouring voice/ that calls but dogs to heel’). The second page of the manuscript shows that Thomas had almost reached the final version of the short poem, however he still reorganises some lines, indicated with an arrow and parenthesis, to ensure balance and rhythm, and to the third page Thomas, having satisfied himself with the work, writes the poem out in a version identical to that which would appear in print (although still without the title To Others Than You; beneath his title Poem Thomas crosses through one line, ‘My friends are enemies’, which may have been, in the spirit of the poem, an incipit) – Friend by enemy I call you out.You with a bad coin in your socket, You my friend there with a winning air Who palmed the lie on me when you looked Brassily at my shyest secret, Enticed with twinkling bits of the eye Till the sweet tooth of my love bit dry, Rasped at last, and I stumbled and sucked, Whom now I conjure to stand as thief In the memory worked by mirrors, With unforgettably smiling act, Quickness of hand in the velvet glove And my whole heart under your hammer, Were once such a creature, so gay and frank A desireless familiar I never thought to utter or think While you displaced a truth in the air,That though I loved them for their faults As much as for their good, My friends were enemies on stilts With their heads in a cunning cloud.A wonderful and rare autograph manuscript. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, minimal areas of paper loss to the upper left edges of each page and the final page with a slight paperclip rust stain to the upper right corner. VGTo Others Than You was published in 1946 as part of the volume of poems by Dylan Thomas entitled Death and Entrances. One of the best-known collections of Thomas’s poems, many of the pieces dealt with the effects of World War II which had ended a year earlier.
