Chokwe - Angola, Zambia Chihongo mask.Hard wood with dark patina, branches, fibers, fabric, rope, pigments and human hair.Small defects and numerous signs of use. . Cm 24,00 x 30,00 x 15,00. In almost all the Chokwe groups that populate the vast territory that extends between Angola and Zaire, the Chihongo masks represented the spirit of a deceased person who interceded to increase prosperity and male power. Formally this type of mask was considered complementary to the Pwo masks that famously embodied the feminine features of beauty. Some Chokwe groups felt that this mask emphasized real features and could only be used and owned by the king and his sons.Splendid for expressiveness, wear and state of preservation, this mask is characterized by two bands of human hair applied only over the ears and three orders of eyebrow incisions that suggest a stylistic influence Mbunda.I integrate the whole system of branches, fibers and fabric that make up the back of this mask and that allowed the dancer to wear it as a hat.Beautiful dark patina and lived and its multiple signs of use.

18th century RN salvage - HMS Edgar (1668) and HMS Royal George (1756) – 3 items of salvage recovered by Maj-Gen Charles Pasley R.E. at Spithead in the early 1840s, together with a note from Sir Charles Gage Brown, describing the articles and the circumstances in which they were presented to his father, Comm. Charles Brown R.N., at Southampton in 1843. (4)Provenance – by direct descent through the Brown family.1.     HMS Edgar (sunk in 1711) – a large pewter bowl with the arms of Rear Admiral Sir Hovenden Walker engraved to its rim.2.     HMS Edgar (sunk in 1711) – an onion-shaped wine bottle encrusted with part of a seashell.3.     HMS Royal George (sunk in 1782) – a bottle of Madeira4.     Sir Charles Gage-Brown – a 300-word note explaining how the above were given to his father by Pasley, who was in charge of salvaging and clearing both vessels, which were a hindrance to the Spithead anchorage. The note from Sir Charles Gage Brown reads:Articles to be disposed of from the wreck of the HMS Royal GeorgeA large circular Bowl, brought up from the wreck of the Royal George in 1843 and presented to my father by Colonel Pasley R. E. with whom he had been associated in the blowing up and removal of the wreck, it is just in the condition in which it was recovered. It measures about 18 inches across and has a broad rim of 2 inches, and with a centre 2 in deep – on the rim is the coat of arms of the former owner. At Herald’s College I ascertained that the arms are borne a family named Walker*. I have not troubled the Admiralty by enquiring if there was an officer of that name serving in the ship at the time of the most melancholy accident, or the rank of such officer so serving. The Royal George was sunk in 1782. There are also two tablespoons just in the condition in which they were recovered. Also a quart bottle of sherry – I may as well give an incident concerning it. On the day that it was brought to my father’s house, there was a dinner party of naval officers & at dessert to which small boys were in those days admitted, he showed them this bottle. There was quite a little excitement about it and one ardent spirit persisted in having the cork drawn, a little of the wine was poured out and tasted by all, a taste was sufficient but our ardent friend was bent upon another test, and threw the remains in the glass into the fire, with the unexpected result of quite a blaze, showing how much spirit remained in it after 60 years submersion. My father had it again corked & sealed and it has never been touched since then.**HMS Edgar – blown up and sunk at Spithead 15 Oct 1711. 400 seamen and others lost – a bottle of Hock with wine in it. The old fashioned shaped Hock bottle, brought up from the wreck by Colonel Pasley R.E. in June 1843. Nearly 200 years old. Also 1lb weight, now weighing but little more than ½ lb.* Gage Brown's note erroneously ascribes the pewter bowl as being salvaged from the Royal George. It was, in fact, as the family later discovered, almost certainly raised from HMS Edgar. Gage Brown took the bowl to the Richmond Herald, Charles Athill, at the College of Arms in London on October 21st 1894 in order to confirm the arms on the bowl were those of the Royal George's Admiral, Richard Kempenfelt. It appears Gage Brown, half a decade after the salvage had been presented to his late father, had been barking up the wrong tree. Athill followed up with a letter the next day:College of ArmsQueen Victoria Street E.C.21 Oct 1894Dear Sir,With reference to the old pewter bowl which you shewed me yesterday. The Arms are not those of Admiral Kempenfelt, but belong to the family of Walker of Ilam co. Stafford. One of the Walkers was probably an officer with the "Royal George".Yours faithfully,Charles H. AthillRichmond Herald** The vendor informs us: 'The 'sherry' bottle from HMS Royal George, which is still a third full, was tasted and proven still sound in 1965 by David Rutherford of Rutherford Osborne, Shippers of Madeira, who declared it to be Madeira Sercial. The bottle from HMS Edgar still contains liquid, but I defy anyone able to drink it!'

Lot 25

Spanish school; second half of the 18th century."The Coronation of the Virgin".Oil on canvas. It presents slight losses and damages.Measurements: 22 x 14 cm; 30,5 x 23 cm (frame). In this work Mary is represented in the centre, establishing herself as the axis of symmetry of the composition. She is crowned by God the Father on the right and Jesus Christ on the left. On the crown above her head flies the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, the bird seen from the front in a foreshortened view. The composition, which is strictly symmetrical without losing its naturalism or a certain restrained dynamism that already reveals the baroque taste, is completed by the presence of five angels at the Virgin's sides and three little angels' heads below her feet. This is a piece in which conceptualism predominates over naturalism, which is why the space is undefined, simply a golden background of Glory from which delicate clouds emerge, opening up in the upper central part to give way to the Holy Spirit. The lighting is also typically mannerist: a dramatic, fanciful and artificial light that multiplies its spotlights and creates delicate nuances that model the volumes, and deep shadows that serve to emphasise Mary's central position. In addition, the author has made a careful study of the postures and gestures, individualising each character and seeking eloquence and expression. At the same time, the gazes of the angels, the Virgin, Jesus and God the Father establish a complex, closed dialogue, typical of a period when painters liked to multiply the readings and meanings of their works, making them almost enigmas. At the same time, the Virgin looks upwards, also directed at God, in her role as mediator between humanity and the Kingdom of Heaven.

Lot 40

Andalusian School, Circle of MATIAS DE ARTEAGA (Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real, 1633 - Seville, 1703), 17th century."The Annunciation".Oil on canvas.Retouching.Repainting and restorations.Measurements: 81 x 102 cm; 105.5 x 120 cm (frame). The spatial complexity that the theme of the Annunciation denotes here, making the pedestrian architectural plane coexist with the celestial one, presents clear concomitants with the way in which Matias de Arteaga treated the biblical episodes. It is therefore part of the Sevillian Baroque, in Arteaga's circle. The main scene is set in an interior in which, on the right hand side, the Virgin kneels before a lectern. A vase of lilies, a symbol of Marian purity, stands between her and the archangel who brings her the good news. Saint Gabriel points upwards, where God the Father and the Holy Spirit burst forth in a burst of golden glory. In the background, the urban architecture is depicted, based on sober, perfectly delineated arcades. A Spanish Baroque painter and engraver of the Sevillian school, Matías de Arteaga y Alfaro was able to capture and interpret the dual influence of Murillo and Valdés Leal with his own personality. The son of the engraver Bartolomé Arteaga, while still a child his family moved to Seville, where he trained in his father's studio and in contact with Murillo, whose influence reveals his early work together with that of Valdés Leal, who settled in Seville the same year that Arteaga passed his master painter's examination in 1656. In 1660 he was among the founding members of the celebrated drawing academy promoted by Murillo, among others, of which he served as secretary between then and 1673. In 1664 he joined the Hermandad de la Santa Caridad brotherhood and two years later the Sacramental del Sagrario brotherhood of Seville cathedral, for which he produced a number of works. Around 1680 he is also recorded as working as an appraiser of paintings. He died in 1703, and the inventory of his estate at his death reveals a wealthy lifestyle that included an important library and an engraving studio, as well as over 150 paintings, almost half of which were of religious subjects. Among them were four series of the Life of the Virgin, some of which were expressly said to contain architectural views, such as those in the present work and those in the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville. The most characteristic feature of his peculiar style is precisely these series of always religious subjects, set in broad landscapes and architectural perspectives taken from prints. Arteaga is represented in the aforementioned Sevillian museum, various Sevillian churches including the cathedral and the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, among others.

Lot 52

Spanish or Novo-Hispanic school, first half of the 17th century."The Trinity receiving the soul of a Christian".Oil on canvas.Frame of the 18th century. It presents perforations. Restorations and faults.Measurements: 108 x 85 cm; 118 x 94 cm (frame). In this composition the ascension of the soul of a deceased Christian is illustrated in a very eloquent and descriptive way. The scene is populated by numerous biblical characters and religious allegories: on the lower level, two demons want to tempt the soul of the recently deceased, but St. Michael breaks in with his sword and a group of saints also watch over the good soul. In heaven, the Virgin awaits, occupying the centre of the composition, flanked by groups of bishops and archangels arranged symmetrically on either side. At the top, God the Father and the Son, together with the Holy Spirit, preside over the composition. Numerous phylacteries cross the skies and establish links between the figures. Stylistically, the painting is fully in keeping with the Spanish Baroque style, although it is likely to have come from workshops in New Spain.

STÈLE D'UMA MAHESHVARA EN GRÈSINDE DU NORD, XIE SIÈCLE38 cm (15 in.) highFootnotes:A SANDSTONE STELE OF UMA MAHESHVARANORTH INDIA, 11TH CENTURY印度北部 十一世紀 砂岩濕婆與烏瑪石碑Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s 'As Uma-Mahesvara, their image shows Uma as part of Shiva's ambience, though not of his body. The togetherness of god and goddess is full of meaning on more than one level: Uma-Mahesvara may be seen as wedded divine lovers, exalted in their embrace; they may be realized in their togetherness as Purusa and Prakrti, Spirit and Matter, Essence and Substance – while each level implies the other, linked by a living myth. Their coincidence subsists in the work of art. Each age and school of art and each sculptor realized Uma-Mahesvara in a separate way, channelled by the iconographic guidance of the manuals on image making.' (Kramrisch, Manifestations of Shiva, 1981, p. 58.) Shiva's fingers hug Uma's supple waist as she nimbly reclines on his left thigh. Twisting her torso and raising her gaze, Uma dotes on Shiva while he looks forward with a searching gaze. Ensconced below are the divine couple's offspring, Ganesha and Kartikeya, as well as endearing depictions of their bull and lion mounts. The remaining carved surface is crammed with celestial attendants and mythical vyalas and makaras. Stylistic comparisons can be drawn with a stele attributed to the mid-10th-century in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (M.75.11). See also a 9th-century Uma Maheshvara stele in the Victoria & Albert Museum (IS.113-1986).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
