Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) - Standing nude Oil on canvas 101.6 x 76.3 cm. (40 x 30 in) Largely self-taught, Brangwyn was internationally celebrated during his lifetime, but his reputation waned following his death in 1956; Wassily Kandinsky once placed the artist at the forefront of the modernist movement.[1] The present work, unlike his plein-air work of Cornwall in the 1880s, and similarly unlike his printed oeuvre that focussed largely on heavy industry and war, is focused exclusively on layers of thick brushwork expressing human form and movement in space. [1] Gombrich, Marius, (12 March 2010), "Painting the spirit that built great empires", The Japan Times. Retrieved 18th October 2015. IMPORTANT: This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
