An extremely rare Silver Cross of Rhodesia group of three awarded to Colour-Sergeant J. “Jock” McKelvie, Support Commando, 1st Rhodesian Light Infantry, late Royal Marine Commandos Silver Cross of Rhodesia (727700 Sgt. J. McKelvie) officially impressed naming on reverse of cross; General Service 1962-2007, 3 clasps, Borneo, Malay Peninsula, Northern Ireland (RM. 22353 J. McKelvie. Mne. R.M.); Rhodesia General Service (727700 Sgt. McKelvie, J. (R)) note this last an official replacement stamped ‘(R)’, generally good very fine (3) £4,000-£5,000 --- Provenance: A. A. Upfill-Brown Collection, Buckland Dix & Wood, December 1991; Dix Noonan Webb, June 2008. The Silver Cross of Rhodesia was awarded on just 30 occasions, four of the recipients being members of the Rhodesian Light Infantry. The official citation for McKelvie’s award, signed by Lieutenant-General J. S. V. Hickman, Commander of the Army, in July 1977, states: ‘Sergeant McKelvie was involved in 14 contacts during the period May 1976 to February 1977. In all these contacts he displayed considerable initiative, leadership and gallantry and, together with his men, accounted for over 60 terrorists. The following contacts are particularly noteworthy: On 9 November 1976, Sergeant McKelvie and seven men were dropped by helicopter into an area in which a large group of terrorists were based. The helicopter was subsequently grounded. Despite the lack of air support, Sergeant MeKelvie and his men killed 18 terrorists in the space of three hours. Sergeant McKelvie's conduct during this contact was exemplary. The success of this contact, which was enhanced by the killing of a further five terrorists and the capture of one, was due principally to Sergeant McKelvie’s personal example, gallantry and coolness in the face of determined opposition. On the 24 November 1976, Sergeant McKelvie and seven men were dropped by helicopter into an area containing a group of terrorists. Once again, through determination, aggression and first class leadership, Sergeant McKelvie and his men, who were later joined by additional men, killed 13 and captured two wounded terrorists. Throughout these and other contacts Sergeant McKelvie has inspired confidence and aggressive spirit in his men. His gallantry, example and disregard for his personal safety have been of the highest order and his professional dedication and determination have been an inspiration to all who serve with him. While in a contact in December 1976, he was severely wounded in the thigh and leg causing him to be hospitalised for two months.’ John “Jock” McKelvie was born in Glasgow in July 1946 and joined the Royal Marines in July 1963. During his 12 years with the Marines he served with 40, 41 and 42 Commando R.M., and was present in operations in Borneo, the Malay Peninsula and Northern Ireland - his official certificate of service confirms. Having been promoted Sergeant in January 1974, he took premature voluntary release in June of the following year, and, with much experience of Commando and anti-terrorist operations under his belt, was a natural candidate for the Rhodesian Army, in which he served with distinction, winning the Silver Cross of Rhodesia. Accompanying research suggests that McKelvie left Rhodesia at short notice, as a result of which he never received his Rhodesia General Service Medal. However, as confirmed by an accompanying letter, and with Lieutenant-General John Hickman’s blessing, a replacement was obtained ‘through the official manufacturer’ and mounted for display with his original Silver Cross and General Service 1962 awards in 2001. Sold with the recipient’s original Royal Marines certificate of service, together with congratulatory letters from President Wrathall, Lieutenant-General J. S. V. Hickman, and officers of the 1st Rhodesian Light Infantry, for the award of his Silver Cross; an eye-witness account of the action fought on 9 November 1976, written by one of the helicopter pilots; three official group photographs, and several other associated photographs, letters and confirmation of provenance.

Peter Lindbergh (1944-2019) was a German fashion photographer renowned for his distinctive black-and-white portraits and his influential contributions to the fashion industry. He was widely regarded as one of the most influential fashion photographers of his time. Born in Poland and raised in Germany, Lindbergh began his photography career in the 1970s. His work stood out for its raw and unfiltered aesthetic, challenging the prevailing standards of beauty and fashion photography. Lindbergh's photographs often emphasized the natural beauty and individuality of his subjects, presenting them in a more authentic and less retouched manner. Lindbergh collaborated with numerous fashion magazines, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and The New Yorker, and he worked closely with top fashion designers such as Giorgio Armani and Calvin Klein. He photographed many celebrities and supermodels, including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford, helping to launch their careers and contributing to the rise of the "supermodel" phenomenon. One of Lindbergh's most iconic works was the January 1990 British Vogue cover, which featured five emerging supermodels, including Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell. This cover is often credited with defining the era and capturing the spirit of the 1990s fashion scene. Lindbergh's impact extended beyond the fashion world. His work transcended mere commercial photography, and he is recognized for his artistic vision and ability to convey emotion and depth through his images. His photographs often had a cinematic quality, capturing a moment frozen in time. Peter Lindbergh received numerous accolades during his career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. His work continues to be exhibited in major galleries and museums worldwide. Sadly, Lindbergh passed away in September 2019, but his artistic legacy and contributions to fashion and photography endure. Measures 9.25 x 13.5 Verso is blank.Mounted to archival quality paper.

Registration - ODD 598PChassis No. - 954-01996-AM.O.T. - ExemptOdometer - 00006 (new odometer) This 1976 LHD Land Rover Series 3 Lightweight has a captivating history. It was spotted 23 years ago by its current owner, who was at that time working in Saudi Arabia on a contract to build a milk processing plant. Whilst on his daily commute he noticed the Land Rover sitting dormant amongst a collection of vehicles outside the home of a local Saudi car collector. After lengthy negotiations, he eventually succeeded in persuading the owner to part with the vehicle for the princely sum of 2,847 Saudi riyals - around £600. In June 2002, the milk plant contract finished, the proud new owner of the Land Rover embarked an arduous journey, traversing the landscapes of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, France, and finally, the United Kingdom. Over the course of nearly one month, the Land Rover and its owner braved the elements and overcame countless challenges. From the scorching heat of Alkharj to the bureaucratic hurdles of customs checkpoints, each leg of the journey presented its own set of trials. Engine troubles, border disputes, and unexpected expenses punctuated the narrative, yet the Land Rover persevered, a testament to its resilience and the resourcefulness of its owner. Reflecting on the journey, when asked if they would embark on such an adventure again, the vendor concludes with a resounding "Not on your Nellie!” The Land Rover, which embodies the marque’s quintessential spirit of adventure and resilience, has now undergone a full restoration, bringing it back to its former glory, and is accompanied with a large Lever Arch file of invoices of expenditure whilst in the vendor's care. The Series IIA Lightweight was replaced by the Series III Lightweight in 1972. The vehicle remained in essence the same bar a few minor changes: there were some modifications to the chassis and a revised gearbox with synchromesh on second through to fourth. In the electrical department the Series III was fitted with an alternator in place of the dynamo, the new indicator switch incorporated a headlamp flasher and horn and the ignition switch was now fitted in a new steering column cowl instead of on the dashboard. The Lightweight did retain the earlier Series IIA metal dashboard even after the upgrade.A LHD example, in current ownership for 23 years and with a fascinating historyThe subject of a full restorationOffered without reserve
Registration - C546 JGLChassis No. - SCAZS000XFCH12535M.O.T. - December 2024Odometer - 87,000This Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit is presented for auction after long-term ownership with the current vendor, who purchased it in 2016. It has a comprehensive history, including receipts from early in its life, and has benefitted from plentiful maintenance by the vendor, including new rear discs, bearings and pads, new front pads, front downpipes and crosspipe, rear spring support, battery, numerous service items and period-correct Avon tyres. The vendor states that the bodywork is in ‘good' condition overall: while there are a couple of small rust bubbles and micro-blistering, the paintwork has a lovely sheen overall. The interior is presentable too, with no rips, splits or burns, and also benefits from refurbished wooden door cappings. This car displays just 87,000 miles on the clock, though this is not warranted, and, while it was built in 1985, it was originally registered on the Isle of Man. It came to the UK in 1987, so that’s the date of registration shown on the logbook. The vendor says the only reason for sale is imminent retirement. As well as being a Rolls-Royce enthusiast, they are heavily into Harley Davidsons, “so after eight great years, have decided to pass the car onto someone who will get more use out of it than me – which is what she deserves”.The Silver Spirit was launched in 1980 as the first of a new generation of Rolls-Royce. It offered modern new styling with sleek, angular lines that were perfect for the 1980s, and an upgraded interior. Underneath, the architecture was derived from the earlier Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, including the classic 6.75-litre V8 engine, while a smooth GM three-speed automatic added to the reliable mechanical makeup. A beautifully cushioned Rolls-Royce ride was delivered by hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension, while Girling automatic hydraulic ride height control added sophistication. The Silver Spirit would also form the basis of the Flying Spur, Silver Dawn, Bentley Mulsanne and Eight series, and others. In summary:· Beautifully prepared Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit in classic metallic silver· Comprehensive history file and original handbook· Well-priced and very presentable Rolls-Royce
