2000 Bentley Arnage Red LabelTransmission: automaticMileage:81,650Launched in 1998, the Arnage was manufactured in Crewe from 1998 to 2009 with its Rolls-Royce sibling, the Silver Seraph. They were the first entirely new designs for the two marques since 1980 when the Silver Spirit and Mulsanne models were introduced. The new Arnage (Green Label) was to be powered by a BMW V8 engine with Cosworth-engineered, twin-turbo chargers and the Seraph was to employ a BMW V12 engine. The Arnage Red Label was launched in October 1999 with the engine reverting back to Bentley power using the traditional V8 engine and a displacement of 6750cc. As part of the modification process, both Red and Green Label cars benefitted from expanded leg room in the cabin, stiffer bodyshells and larger wheels and brakes. First registered on 2nd October 2000 and supplied by Jack Barclay, this impressive example has been in the ‘Bentley enthusiast’ vendors ownership since June 2009. The file for this Arnage contains bills and receipts for servicing, the most recent with specialist Danny Wilcox of DEW services. It is presented in Midnight Emerald with Magnolia Connolly leather hide interior and it also comes with two sets of keys. Presented to auction with a V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until the end of July 2023, this 6.75 V8 litre Bentley offers supreme luxury for a modest outlay.
1992 Bentley Turbo RL Transmission: paddleMileage:108276The Bentley Turbo R initially inherited the turbocharged engine from the Mulsanne Turbo and also sported a retuned suspension and wider tyres on alloy wheels, quite a departure for a Bentley. From the 1987 model year, however, the Turbo R's V8 engine was retuned with new Bosch MK-Motronic fuel injection for added torque. Other modifications carried out at the same time included new sports seats and a higher rear axle ratio. Motor Trend called the Turbo R 'the first Bentley in decades deserving of the famous name' in their review of the car on its introduction to the United States in 1989. The suspension changes, though seemingly subtle, transformed the heavy car into a real performer and slotted above the Bentley Mulsanne S and Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, and it carved a well-deserved niche in the world of performance saloons. This long wheel base example was registered new on 9th April 1992 in Balmoral Green paintwork over Parchment interior with green piping and a green top roll. The history file that accompanies the car includes various MoT records including the most recent, which is valid until 10th September 2022. Offered at no reserve this is a very good opportunity to acquire a desirable RL example.

KARL HAGENAUER (Austria, 1898 - 1956)."Figure of a horse", ca.1925-30.Sculpture in brass, with marble base.Size: 24 x 28 x 3 cm (sculpture)+ 2 cm (base). The son of the goldsmith Carl Hagenauer, Karl studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna, where he was taught by Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and imbued with the spirit of the Wiener Wekstätte. After obtaining his diploma in architecture, he did military service between 1917 and 1919, and on his return he began to work as an architect and in his father's studio. During these years he created numerous pieces in silver, brass, copper, enamel, ivory, stone and wood. In 1928, after his father's death, he took over the management of the workshop and was responsible for the expansion of the firm, extending production to cabinetmaking and opening shops in Vienna and Salzburg. Since then he has exhibited his best pieces both in Austria and abroad, was twice awarded the gold medal at the Milan Triennale and was made a member of the Austrian Werkbund and the Werkstätte. His works are now in collections all over the world, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the MoMA and the Jewish Museum in New York, the Casa Lis in Salamanca and many others.
WILLIAM ETTY (York, Great Britain, 1787 - 1849)."Young Man at Rest, 1828.Oil on canvas glued to panel. It has craquelure and restorations on the pictorial surface. There are losses and damage to the frame.Signed and dated in the lower right area.Measurements: 57 x 78 cm; 75 x 96 cm (frame). No British painter of historical subjects has devoted himself to the representation of the human form as assiduously as William Etty, and in particular to the female nude. Among his contemporaries, who marvelled at the depth and corporeality of his figures, he was known and highly praised for his ability to capture the human form and reproduce flesh tones. Etty was born in York and left school at the age of twelve to work as an apprentice in a print shop. He completed his apprenticeship after seven years and moved to London, where in 1807 he began training at the Royal Academy under Thomas Lawrence. Despite the admiration of his contemporaries for his technical skill, such as his friend John Constable, Etty struggled to gain public recognition early in his career, and it was not until 1821, with the exhibition of Cleopatra's Arrival in Cilicia (National Museums Liverpool) at the Royal Academy, that he finally received the acclaim he craved. Critics marvelled at Cleopatra's "languid, exuberant beauty" and described the painting as belonging to the "highest class" of art. Etty followed this success by exhibiting a succession of important mythological works over the next few years, which established Etty as one of Britain's most important historical painters in the early 19th century. With the advent of the twentieth century, Etty's important contribution to British art had been almost entirely forgotten, and an Arts Council exhibition in 1954 sparked only a brief revival of interest. Today, however, unfettered by the dictates of 19th century artistic discourse and morality, we can appreciate the beauty of Etty's art for what it is. As explored in the recent exhibition "William Etty: Art & Controversy" at the York Art Gallery, Etty's art was the result of a lifetime of serious engagement with the traditions of European painting, dedication to the study of the pattern of life, and commitment to an independent artistic spirit.

CHARLES ANFRIE (France, 1833-1905)."Cuirassier soutenant un soldat blessé".Gilt bronze.Signed on the base.Measurements: 80 x 45 x 31 cm.The sculptor Charles Anfrie was an outstanding bronze artist, valued for the detail with which he describes the costumes and the verism captured in the features. In this scene, a cuirassier from the Franco-Prussian War holds a wounded soldier. Their posture is charged with heroism and a certain religiosity, recalling the theme of the Pieta. The different qualities and textures of the costumes have been recreated with painstaking attention to detail.French sculptor, active in Paris. He produced mainly bronze works in the spirit of academicism and naturalism. Many works refer to historical and mythological themes, as well as everyday life.
ÉMILE GUILLEMIN (France, 1841-1907) and ALFRED BARYE (Paris, 1839-1882)."Arab Knight".Sculpture in calamine on an oval wooden base.Signed by both artists.Measurements: 80 x 60 x 30 cm."Arabian Knight" is a flamboyant sculpture by the bronze artists Émile Guillemin and Alfred Barye, created in 1884, now housed in the Louvre Museum. Due to its success, other copies were made following the aesthetics of the original. Like the one in the Parisian gallery, in this sculpture the two artists depict, in a personal style rich in detail, realistic, dynamic and highly expressive, the figure of an Arab horseman returning from hunting, with a duck and a gazelle hanging from the saddle and a rifle on his shoulder. It was a piece of remarkable beauty and importance (in fact, it was one of the most significant sculptures of the so-called Belle Epoque in France). In terms of aesthetics and historical context, "Arab Knight" belongs to the Orientalist style, a movement born in the 19th century as a consequence of the Romantic spirit of flight in time and space, in which artists produced meticulous portraits of Orient and imagined pasts, recreated to the millimetre but ultimately unknown and idealised. It is worth noting that such works, which recall important historical figures or prominent struggles of the past, were common in 19th-century art as they were often chosen to decorate the interiors associated with the male figure in important houses.A French sculptor of the Belle Époque, Emile Guillemin worked mainly in bronze, although he also produced works in other materials. He trained with his father, the painter Auguste Guillemin, and with Jean-Jules Samson. He exhibited his work at the Paris Salon between 1870 and 1899 and was awarded an honourable mention in 1897.Alfred Barye le Fils or Alf Barye was a French sculptor of the Belle Époque, a pupil of his father, the artist Antoine-Louis Barye. His work includes bronzes of animals as well as oriental figures.

HENRI PICQ: MULTI GEM-SET AND DIAMOND TUTTI FRUTTI DOUBLE-CLIP/BROOCH, CIRCA 1930Each openwork shield-shaped clip composed of twisting vines issuing from a central ogee motif, set throughout with brilliant, old brilliant, single and baguette-cut diamonds, leaf-shaped carved rubies and sapphires and fluted emerald beads studded with diamonds, with further black enamel detail, one clip with maker's mark HP, both clips with French assay marks, length 6.2cmFootnotes:Provenance: A Private Collection of 20th Century Jewels (Lots 206 - 216)This double-clip/brooch displays the maker's mark of Henri Picq (1861-1941) whose workshop was favoured by Cartier as their principal Parisian supplier for gem-set platinum jewellery between 1900-1918. The Henri Picq workshop was renowned for their high-quality platinum jewels and later produced many of Cartier's 'Tutti Frutti' creations. Cartier 'was said to use the best platinum in Paris. It was renowned for its white, shimmering surface, an alloy of which the Picq workshop was especially proud' (see Nadelhoffer, H., 'Cartier', Thames and Hudson, 1984, p.59).Cartier's Indian-inspired 'Tutti Frutti' jewels are some of the firm's most celebrated and recognisable designs. Cartier first began experimenting with Indian-inspired jewels as early as 1901 when the firm produced a necklace for Queen Alexandra. In 1911, Jacques Cartier first visited India for the Delhi Durbar, a two-week mass event celebrating the coronation of George V, a dazzling scene where the giving and receiving of jewels played an important role in the ceremony. This was the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship between Cartier and the East, resulting in numerous purchases of rare, historic Indian jewels in Delhi, Calcutta and Bombay. The ancestral carved gems that Jacques Cartier first brought back to Paris inspired the creative genius of Louis Cartier and their designer, Charles Jacqueau, who created light, airy platinum frames that were strong enough to hold them in a variety of geometric arrangements, producing a riot of colour. During the 1920s, Indian princes went to Cartier to have their family jewels and ancestral gems redesigned into modern European jewels. American and European clients simultaneously fell in love with Cartier's Indian-inspired creations that were rooted in antiquity while looking refreshingly modern, capturing the spirit and exuberance of the Jazz Age. The first 'Tutti Frutti' jewel to be shown publicly was a bracelet at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925 and the firm's 'Tutti Frutti' creations continued to flourish throughout the 1930s. During this next decade, Cartier began to move away from the austere geometry of the early Art Deco period towards more sinuous motifs with vibrant combinations of colour and texture. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
