Set of 9 original vintage Second World War propaganda posters issued in France. 1. Nazi occupied France with an appeal by Marschall Philippe Pétain, published by the Secours National. Travail famille patrie -Francais, souviens-toi! Notre defaite est venue de nos relachements. L'esprit de jouissance l'a emporte sur l'esprit de sacrifice. On a revendique plus qu'on a servi. Le premier devoir est aujourd'hui d'obeir. Ph.Petain - Work. Family. Country. Frenchman, remember! Our defeat came from our laxness. The spirit of enjoyment got the better of the spirit of sacrifice. People asked for more than they put in. The first duty today is to obey. Ph. Petain. Henri Philippe Benoni Omer Petain, was a French general officer who attained the position of Marshal of France at the end of World War I, during which he became known as The Lion of Verdun (Le Lion de Verdun). In collaboration with Nazi Germany, he then served as the Chief of State of Vichy France from 1940 to 1944. Petain, who was 84 years old in 1940, ranks as France's oldest head of state. Good condition, creasing, pinholes, small tears. The order was issued on 24 August 1939 at 6pm. On 3 September 1939—two days after the German invasion of Poland—France declared war on Nazi Germany according to its defensive treaty with Poland, when France's ultimatum to Germany, issued the previous day, expired at 17:00. This occurred hours after the United Kingdom declaration of war on Germany. From 1939 until 1940, the French Third Republic was at war with Germany. The period from 1940 until 1945 saw competition between Vichy France and the Free French Forces under General Charles de Gaulle for control of the overseas empire. In 1944, after the landings of the Allies in France (Normandy, Provence), they expelled the German Army, putting an end to the Vichy Regime.
