An unusual George IV silver fiddle pattern toddy ladle by Alexander Cameron of Dundee assay Newcastle 1828 and a Victorian preserve spoon maker GG over CC Newcastle 1862The Scottish silversmith Alexander Cameron sent articles to be assayed in Newcastle between 1828 and 1831. There are two suggested reasons for this. Either he like other provincial silversmiths was reluctant to send articles to Edinburgh or as is more likely it was logistical because communications along the East coast were faster and more frequent.

A William IV Scottish silver punch ladle, with marks for Edinburgh 1830, maker William Cunningham, the circular bowl with decorative floral border against a stippled ground with central initialled cartouche, the bowl inset to the centre with a gilt coin inscribed Georgius II, with similarly cast mounts to the wrythen whalebone handle Length 34cm Note: Popular legend associates coin inset punch ladles such as this fine example, with the Jacobite cause as each serving presented an opportunity to ‘drown’ a Hanoverian monarch in the punch.
