A set of six Australian Arts and Crafts silver coloured tea spoons by James Alexander Linton, maker’s mark incuse ‘JAL’, a gumnut and ‘ST.SILVER’, 1930s, with a heart shaped bowl, plain square section handles and terminating in fish within an open heart frame, 11.5cm (4.5in) long; a conforming set of six coffee spoons, conforming marks, 9cm (3.5in) long; and a similar small ladle, conforming marks, 12.5cm (5in) long, 153g (4.9 oz) gross. London-trained artist, teacher and craftsman, James W R Linton (active 1869-1947) was a leading exponent of the Arts and Crafts style in Perth, Western Australia. Together with his working partner Arthur G Cross, he produced much jewellery and silverware, including spoons. During the 1920s and 1930s, Linton was in partnership with his elder son James Alexander Barrow (Jamie) Linton (1904-1980) whom he had taught.
