A late George II punch ladle, maker’s mark probably that of Phillip Goddard, circa 1745, with a periwinkle shaped bowl embossed with a senior Naval officer, a ship, cannons and an encampment, and with a turned wood handle, the rim struck four times with the maker’s mark only and engraved with the crest of Northesk, 35.5cm (14in) long It is believed that this item commemorates Admiral Vernon’s celebrated capture of the Spanish Fortress of Porto Bello in the West Indies, in 1739 which resulted in near-hero status for Vernon and his achievement. (Admiral, Lord Northesk was third-in-command at Trafalgar)
