A 19th century Elkington & Co. silver-plated bone-handled canteen of cutlery in a fitted oak case, Old English pattern, comprising twelve dinner forks, twelve dessert spoons, twelve dessert forks, twelve fish knives, twelve teaspoons, twelve table spoons, five egg spoons, soup ladle and a pair of fish servers, each piece engraved with a coronet. A Doulton `Discovery Antarctic Expedition 1901` jug, Terra Nova electroplate spoon and fork and a `Cutty Sark` soup ladle, the jug printed in blue with the Expedition logo and with a Clarke`s patent pewter cover, 16.5cm (6.5in) high, the electroplate by Walker and Hall, the ladle decorated with pennant and name within gilt and blue lines (4) (D) The SS Discovery was purpose built by the Dundee Shipbuilder`s Company. She was launched by Lady Markham on 21st March 1901. Sir Clements Markham of the Royal Geographical Society had been the main instigator of the 1901-4 expedition and had chosen Robert Falcon Scott to lead it with Ernest Shackleton as his 3rd Officer. The ship was freed from the ice by Terra Nova sailing alongside and the use of explosives. Terra Nova was to carry Scott`s 1910-13 British Antarctic Expedition giving that ill fated expedition its name
