CAUGHLEY RICE SPOON AND A PIERCED EXAMPLE LATE 18TH CENTURY after a Chinese shape, both painted with the ‘Maltese Cross’ pattern, with a flowerhead applied at the terminal, open crescent mark 13.7cm and 14cm long Provenance: The Maisels Collection of British Ceramics Note: The form is inspired by the Chinese rice spoon, but the exact purpose of the English porcelain rice spoon is unknown. The plain shape and flat handle made them difficult to use, except as a small ladle. The same shape of spoon with a pierced bowl was probably used as a sifter spoon.
