KOZAN: A FINE BAMBOO KISERUZUTSU WITH HANNYA SHINGYO SUTRABy Kozan, signed Kozan dojin koku 江山道人刻 with seal Kozan 江山Japan, c. 1900An aesthetically pleasing kiseuzutsu of musozutsu form bringing together a combination of exceptional workmanship and material selection. The base for the creation is a wonderful section of tubular bamboo which, when viewed from the top and bottom, reveals the beautiful grain of the bamboo. The design is engraved in teppitsu-bori, also known as 'iron brush carving', emulating fine ink painting, with three priests partaking in a tea ceremony; one holds a fly whisk while another holds hishaku ladle and the other, presumably the most senior of the three, looks on, supervising the proceedings with a very serious expression.Above the priests is a perfectly inked transcription of the Hannya Shingyo Sutra (Heart Sutra), written in tiny kanji with each character measuring only a few millimeters in height. Signed KOZAN dojin koku [made by Kozan, a man of Tao] and with further seal Kozan.LENGTH 21 cmCondition: Excellent condition.

Jan Sadeler, Jacopo Bassano - Christ In The House Of Martha And Mary / Description: Christ is a guest in the house of the sisters Martha and Maria. Martha is working in the kitchen and stirring the food with a ladle. Mary sits at Christ's feet listening to his words. An engraving made by Johan Sadeler showing one of the so called kitchen scenes painted by Jacopo Bassano. / Dimensions: 20,50 x 28,70 cm / Condition: A good dark excellent impression trimmed on plate border with omission of text line. / Literature: Hollstein / Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts c.1450-1700 (199) --- (Text from Michael Bury, 'The Print in Italy 1550-1620', BM, London 2001, cat.149)One of the striking features of the Sadelers' work in Venice is that they produced prints of this small size and intimate delicacy, quite different from anything their Italian contemporaries were doing. This and other engravings by the Sadelers were crucial to the diffusion of knowledge of the work of the Bassano family of painters and thus to establishing their international reputation (Aikema and Brown, 1999, p.560). Pan identified the Blaffer Foundation picture in Houston, signed by both Jacopo and Francesco Bassano, as the original of the composition engraved here. The Blaffer Foundation picture came from the Gonzago collection: see Morselli, R (ed.), Gonzaga catalogue (La Celeste Galeria), no. 19, p.182]. / Medium: Engraving /Circa: 1598
