A George IV silver two handled soup tureen on stand, by John James Keith, London 1829, the oblong melon shaped body on leaf capped scroll feet with a shell, leaf and gadroon border, the stand with a gadroon border supported on four anthemion style scrolling feet, the tureen engraved with coat of arms and inscription, the cover with crest, overall height 28cm, overall width 43 cm, with a William IV silver fiddle and thread pattern soup ladle, By William Chawner, London 1831, engraved with same crest, 34cm long 146oz. The inscription reads `To the REVd THOMAS WATKINS, late Curate of St Thomas Winchester for the zealous and orthodox Discharge of his parochial Duties of that Church during a Period of twenty six years the Parishioners gratefully present this small but sincere Token of their Approbation`. The arms are those for Watkin impaling Earl/Earle. The Revd. Thomas Watkins (1775-c.1841) was educated at Christ Church Oxford between 1793 and 1797; he later gained an MA in 1801. Upon graduating, he was appointed Vicar Choral at Hereford Cathedral, perhaps whilst preparing for ordination. In 1810, he was appointed Vicar of Wootton St Lawrence, Basingstoke, and in 1813 took an additional appointment as Chaplain at Winchester College. Evidently a wealthy man, in 1813 he donated £5 to a Winchester civic appeal for aid to Russia; the average contribution from the neighbouring gentry was no. 1.1.0. He retired in 1834.
