An Arts and Crafts turquoise and gold ring, attributed to William Thomas Pavitt, marked with applied tags, one in white metal with the symbol for Venus/female, and the other in copper with the astrological symbol for Libra, these placed either side of 1909 in a quartered circular gold tag, the cabochon between rose, leaf and tendril shoulders, the shank with bead and wire decoration, finger size P, in a Wm Thomas Pavitt ring box. William Thomas Pavitt is listed in `The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths, Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914` at 17 Hanover Square, London, having registered on the 18th September 1906, where in 1913 he is listed as a designer/draughtsman. Mark ref. 15912. William, along with Kate Pavitt, was the author of `The Book of Talismans, Amulets and Zodiacal Gems`. His interest in such symbolism is evident in this jewel. The use of the symbols, metals and a date give rise to many suppositions, for instance copper was called Venus by the ancient alchemists, gold was the symbol of Apollo (the sun) and silver was for Diana (the moon) and would, therefore, have allegorical meanings yet to be deciphered.
