1st-2nd century AD. The rim and handle from a silver patera, with notched flanges to the rim developing to a broad flat handle; inlaid gold lettering 'FPO'; modern suspension ring fixed to the underside. Cf. for the style similar silverware in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York under accession no.1994.431.2.; for a silver patera see MET accession no.47.100.29. 52.7 grams, 14.3cm (5 3/4"). From the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister; from her collection formed early 1960s-1990s. This silver patera represents Roman metalwork of the highest quality. Vessels of this shape are among the most characteristic of the late Roman world. It may have been used for ceremonial purposes and collecting money from the faithful. The name inscribed on the handle may refer to the maker or commissioner of the piece. The 'FPO' legend probably represents the initials of the owner's tria nomina under Roman naming convention.
