In 1760 he became the High Steward of the University of Oxford and in the same year Lord of the Bedchamber to King George III, in which position he may have been witness to a brief episode in 1765 of the King’s mania (probably caused by porphyria). Having joined the Privy Council in 1762, Lord Lichfield assumed the role of Chancellor of the University of Oxford in the same year.
