Ca. 100-300 AD.An oval-shaped stone intaglio engraved with a scene of the first of twelve labors of Hercules - killing the Nemean Lion, set in a possibly later gold ring of a round hoop and wide shoulders. The twelve works of Hercules were a punishment imposed by the Delphic oracle on the hero Heracles for murdering his own family. These tasks were very difficult to accomplish even for a hero. The Nemean lion was a vicious monster, which could not be killed with mortals' weapons because its golden fur was impervious to attack. However, Hercules strangled him to death with his immense strength. She was believed to be responsible for the fertility of the land. A charming lapis lazuli amulet in the form of a hedgehog with an egg-shaped body with hatched details on its back, and a protruding snout with a finely defined face features set in a later gold ring of a round hollow hoop with a flat bezel. The ancient Egyptians considered the hedgehog as a symbol of a re-birth, due to their ability to hibernate underground for long periods when food is scarce and re-appear when food is abundant again. New Kingdom, Ca. 1550-1070 BC.A gold swivel ring formulated into a wearable pendant, the ring with twisted wires connecting to the ball terminals, centered by an Egyptian, steatite scarab with incised iconography, portraying a stylised figure, likely to be Horus as a falcon, facing a crocodile and standing over a basket. The scarab is encircled by an oval frame of intricately-cut decoration. The ring band has been attached to a gold loop with a connective gold necklace. The ring is possibly of a later period. Ca. 900-1100 AD.A superb heavy gold ring comprised of a twisted band with wrapped terminals. This ring was intended to evoke the form of a snake. In Norse mythology, Jormungand, also called the “Midgard Serpent,” is a snake or dragon who lives in the ocean that surrounds Midgard, the visible world. He was so enormous that his body forms a circle around the entirety of Midgard. He is one of the three children of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, along with Hel and Fenrir. Ca. 200 AD.A gold ring with a circular hoop and a bezel set with carnelian stone intaglio depicting an emperor, possibly Caracalla in his left profile. Caracalla ruled as emperor from 198 to 217 AD and enjoys a chequered reputation, portrayed by the ancient sources as a tyrant, and was killed by a disaffected soldier in 217. However, he also granted universal citizenship to all male subjects living under the Roman Empire, greatly expanding the legal rights of vast swathes of the population.
