An 18 carat gold opal and diamond set ring, size P, total weight approx 4.9 g CONDITION REPORTS Other than slight surface scratching to the gold conducive to age and use, there does not appear to be any visable damage to the ring. See additional images of opal against white packground. Diameter of opal approx 6mm dia x 3mm deep. The diamonds appear to have several inclusions/flaws when viewed with a 30x lens. These inclusions not obvious with the naked eye. The colour appears to be very clear and bright with the naked eye difficult to see any yellowing. Dimaonds appear otherwise in good condition though one with slight scratching to one facet, the opal appears from the naked eye to be in good order though under a 30x lens has minor scratching to the surface

Mikhail Treister, titled 'Ancient Toreutics and Jewellery in Eastern Europe' and copies of the relevant pages from Masterpieces of Ancient Eurasian Art where this piece is published; also accompanied by copies of the relevant Pierre Bergé & Associés catalogue pages; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.152140-10021. Dr. Adams explains (op.cit.) that the gold rod was originally extended in a single curve to accommodate the human neck, but at the time of deposition it was converted to a coil possibly to prevent it being re-used - a genre of ritual destruction found in many contexts. A video of this lot can be viewed on Timeline Auctions website.
