AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY BLOODSTONE SIGNET RING The oval panel carved with the arms of the de Pury family, to a polished gold tapering setting Size/dimensions: finger size I 1/2 Gross weight: 5.7 grams The seal shows a variant of the arms of the de PURY family of Neu(f)chattel in the Prussian state of Germany, now Switzerland. The family are Huguenot in origin and it is David de PURY (1709-1786), a banker and merchant, who first settled in Neuchattel. In 1785 he was ennobled as a Baron by Frederick II of Prussia. The presence of the coronet of a baron on the seal therefore indicates that the item is dated after 1785. Notably the family had traded from Lisbon Portugal and where responsible for trade with America, where a principality bears their name. They were also bankers to the Portuguese royal family. Despite never being resident in the UK they were, as a result of their trading with America, awarded British citizenship.     Condition Report: There are chips and nibbles to the panel commensurate with age and use, the shank has been sized, there are some small hairline marks to the shank from possible stretching of the gold to make the shank larger.
