A gold finger ring of probable Post-Medieval date, c. 1550-1650. The ring demonstrates a circular hoop, with expanded scrolled shoulders that widen towards a projecting, tiered circular bezel. The latter is inset with an uncertain stone, now a rather grainy greyish blue colour. Diameter of hoop: 17mm. Weight: 1.98g. Originally with a bent hoop, now repaired and polished. Provenance: found Stinsford, Dorset. Treasure case 2017T299. Recorded on the PAS as SOM-D01838.
A complete gold 'Posy' type finger ring of probable 17th century date, c. 1600-1700. The ring consists a circular hoop, its outer surface ornately decorated with an alternating pattern of floral sprays and sub-oval panels decorated with incised cross-hatching. Traces of enamel are preserved in the recesses of the former, mostly a light sea-green colour. On the interior of the band, the following inscription is visible in separated, slightly curving script: Favor my affection-followed by the maker's mark of the initials 'R W' in a rectangular cartouche. Condition: very good, slight knock to one side of hoop. An unusually small example. External diameter: c. 14.5mm. Weight: 1g. Provenance: ex English collection, acquired on the UK market in the 1980s.
A gold and gem stirrup type ring dating to the Medieval period, c. 1200-1300. The ring demonstrates a circular hoop that expands towards a pointed bezel, the shoulders both decorated with three adjacent vegetal motifs probably intended to represent a vine and grapes. Above this, the bezel (showing traces of bevelling on its underside) has been set with a small oval cabochon gem or glass setting. Weight: 1.49g. Discussion: stirrup type rings were popular throughout the Medieval period, appearing from c. 1150-1400. The use of vegetal decoration, however, suggests that this example is probably from the later part of the period. Provenance: found Calbourne, Isle of Wight, 2015. Treasure case 2015T940. Recorded on the PAS as IOW-5E7555.
