Roman Gold Ring Circa 2nd century AD. Gold, 22.85 g, 29mm x 25mm; bezel 13mm x 11mm. An impressive keeled type ring with a raised oval bezel within a proved border engraved with a standing bird. The shoulders and shank have stylised scrolls on each edge and a raised central rib that tappers toward the lower band. Ref: Oman, V&A Catalogue of Rings 1930. plt. IV. Acquired by descent from the current owner's father, originally found near Newark, Nottinghamshire c. 1988.
Medieval Gold Posy Ring. Circa, 14th century AD. Gold, 2.42 g, 19.69 mm. UK ring size N/O, US 7. A plain band of high karat gold inscribed around the outside of the band in French, +DU BON CUERE, meaning "of good heart". "un bon cour" and its variants is a commonly occurring inscription on medieval rings. The French language was commonly adopted for expressions of love, even on rings of English manufacture in the Middle Ages. Ref: C.C. Oman. V&A Catalogue of Rings 1930. plate. XXVII. Medieval Gold Ring Circa, 14th century AD. Gold, 2.4 g, 19 mm. Internal: 17 mm. A band formed of a series of lozenges with crimped sections between. Each lozenge is engraved either with a letter of the inscription or a stylised flower motif. The inscription reads: 'en bon joie' (in good joy). Ref: Scarisbrick & Henig. Finger Rings, p.46. plt. 14.
