Case: 18ct gold, gold cuvette, translucent enamel to the covers, polychrome enamel scenes depicting ‘Day and Night’, no.32055, stamped B.Co. Signed: case and movement. Dimensions: diameter 33.5mm. £500-£700 --- The enamel scenes of ‘Day & Night’ are based on a pair of bas-reliefs executed by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1768 - 1844) in Rome. Thorvaldsen was a Danish sculptor who worked in Italy from 1797 to 1838. The goddess of Dawn (Aurora) flies through the air with an outstretched arm scattering flowers on the earth, while Nyx (Goddess of Night) carries infant twins in blissful sleep. A 19th century intaglio ring and a post-Medieval Islamic ring, the hardstone intaglio carved to depict a classical male profile, the head adorned with a laurel wreath, gold mounted, the band with French guarantee mark, together with a post-Medieval Islamic rock crystal cabochon ring, 17th century and later, the gold mount with engraved scroll decoration throughout, the band later stamped with French import mark, ring sizes very approximately H to M. £400-£600 --- Condition Report Both damaged. The 19th century intaglio ring with very misshapen shank, the Islamic ring with a split at one shoulder etc. Viewing advised. Gross weight 9.4gm. The Antique Islamic ring - according to a PMI test on an XRF Analyzer is testing as 19ct gold.

A Victoria gold vesta case, of rectangular form, the front applied with the Royal coat of arms, the reverse with monogram ‘HS’, both set within a roundel, between borders of repeating fleur-de-lys to the lid and base, with ring attachment, unmarked, length 4.2cm. £1,000-£1,500 --- According to a PMI test on an XRF Analyzer, the vesta case is testing as 18ct gold. Condition Report Raised detail of the Royal coat of arms rather rubbed. Otherwise in good condition. Weight 36.3gm.

Romano-British: A 4th century gold finger ring, the hoop formed of two beaded filigree wire bands separating to form twin spiral shoulders, with small globules to the centres, supporting the bezel of square form with flat back plate, the outer roped flange border with inner strip mounted below the slightly cabochon green hardstone, (ring compressed). £2,400-£3,000 --- Provenance: This ring was discovered by a metal detectorist at Hambleton, North Yorkshire, in 2022. It has been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database Ref: YORYM-B6A9F2 and disclaimed as Treasure. This ring is comparable to rings from the Thetford Hoard (No. 10 and 12) and possibly from the same workshop. Chrysoprase is a variety of chalcedony of apple green colour. It was used by both the Greek and Romans as gemstones but examples are rare. Chrysoprase was the tenth foundation stone of the celestial Jerusalem. (Apocrypha, XXI v. 20) and one of the twelve sacred gemstones listed in Revelations XX.. According to a PMI test on an XRF Analyzer, the ring is testing as 96.35% gold alloyed with silver and traces of iron and copper. Condition Report The ring has been compressed in the ground but is intact with the green hardstone undamaged. Weight 7.89gm.

A 19th century gold horse fob seal, the finely cast horse realistically modelled, and mounted to an oval plaque with ribbed border, and bearing spurious Russian marks for Fabergé, above a polished bloodstone base, with ring suspension loop, height 28mm. £500-£700 --- Condition Report In good condition. No chips to the bloodstone. Length of bloodstone panel 25mm. Weight 12.0gm.

A Medieval late 13th/early 14th century gold and sapphire set stirrup ring, the hoop of ‘D’ shaped cross-section, the yellow gold ring with raised triangular-shaped bezel centred at the apex with a cabochon sub-triangular shaped sapphire, the bezel flat to one side, and angled to the opposing side following the outline of the sapphire, diameter 20mm, width 3mm, ring size approximately R. £5,000-£7,000 --- Provenance: This ring was discovered by a metal detectorist in Burradon in Northumberland in 2021. It has been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database Ref: NCL-ACC8FB and disclaimed as Treasure, Ref. 2021 T252. Burradon was formerly in the parish of Alwinton where the church of St Michael and All Angels dates from the early Norman period, but fell into disrepair in the 15th century. To the south east of Burradon is the market town of Rothbury, founded in 1291, which was the centre for selling livestock and wool. Condition Report The hoop has a few minor surface marks, while the sapphire has a small surface mark visible under 10x magnification and some surface abrasions. The gold has been tested on the XRF Analyzer as 64.86% with 21.92% silver. Weight 3.7gm.

Lot 49

An early 17th century enamel and rock crystal ring, the central square-cut rock crystal set within a raised square bezel decorated with three indents of pale blue enamel to the outer longer sides, with two indents to the inner sides, the shoulders bifurcated and enamel inlaid, and applied with a gold quatrefoil, the D-shaped hoop with vine scroll pattern inlaid with pale blue enamel., the lower section of the hoop plain and narrowing slightly, diameter 18.6mm. £3,000-£4,000 --- Provenance: This ring was discovered by a metal detectorist near Selbourne in Hampshire in 2022.. It has been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database Ref: SUR-ED1CD5. The ring has been compared in style to another from the Cheapside Hoard found in London in 1912 and dating to the late 16th/early 17th century. According to a PMI test on an XRF Analyzer, the gold purity is testing as 77.95%. Condition Report For an excavated item of jewellery this ring is in exceptional condition with virtually full enamel and a perfect gem setting. Weight 2gm.

A gold and enamelled propelling pencil by Sampson Mordan & Co, the outer sleeve enamelled with colourful dragons over a guilloché ground, with anthemion border below, the gold shaft signed ‘S. MORDAN & CO’, on ring suspension loop, fully extended (including ring suspension) length 7.5cm. £200-£300 --- Condition Report The extension mechanisim a little loose. Enamel work in good condition. Some nicks to the gold of the ring suspension loop, Weight 12.5gm.

A collection of four 19th century memorial rings, all detailed with a black enamel band reading ‘IN MEMORY OF’; the first inscribed ‘Sir Robert Macreth, died 6 Feb 1819 aged 94’, 18ct gold, maker’s mark ‘JG’, hallmarked for London 1819; the second, 18ct gold, inscribed ‘Tho.s Paget died 18th Dec.r 1843 Aged 79 years’, hallmarked for London 1828; the third, 9ct gold, inscribed ‘Grandfather 1908’, maker’s mark ‘WGM’, hallmarked for Chester 1900; the fourth, 18ct gold, inscribed ‘My Father Died Dec 24th 1890 aged 75’, hallmarked for London 1890, ring sizes T (leading edge), O½, O and P respectively. £400-£600 --- Sir Robert Mackreth (?1725–1819), of Ewhurst, Hampshire, was an English club owner, money-lender, speculator and politician. He was a Member of Parliament for Castle Rising between 1774 -1784, and for Ashburton from 1784 - 1802. Condition Report Some enamel losses, wear commensurate with age. First ring weight: 4.8gm. Remaining three gross weight 6.1gm.

Lot 50

A late 16th/early 17th century heavy gold posy ring, inscribed to the inside in capitals “*FEARE GOD***”, decorated to the outside with eleven alternating large pellets and ellipses with decorative piercing between, within outer raised rim, ring size W. £1,600-£2,000 --- Provenance: From a UK collection dating back to 1990. This ring is of large size with an unusual decoration. Condition Report Minimal surface wear otherwise all the details clear and sharp. Weight 9.7gm.

Lot 51

A late 16th/early 17th century gold posy ring, the D-shaped band inscribed to the interior in Roman capitals ‘rather.deathe.then.false.of.favthe’, the ‘TH’ conjoined, the exterior decorated with four figures-of-eight each containing a floral motif, possibly an extended fleur-de-lis, ring size N. £800-£1,000 --- Provenance: This ring was discovered by a metal detectorist near Wendlebury, Oxfordshire in 2019. It has been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database Ref: BUC-786085 and disclaimed as Treasure Ref: 2019 T1188. The inscription is recorded on a British Museum Harleian manuscript dated approximately 1596, and an example of the same posy can be found in the Sir John Evans’s Collection. A late 17th/18th century gold posy ring, the plain gold band inscribed to the interior ‘Mor then my life I love thee’ in italic script, ring size I. £600-£800 --- Provenance: This ring was found near York circa 1990. Condition Report In fine condition with very little surface wear. Weight 1.25gm.

Lot 53

An 18th century gold posy ring, the interior inscribed ‘I give it thee to think on mee’ in italic cursive script, plain exterior, ring size P. £800-£1,000 --- Provenance: Discovered by a metal detectorist near Semley in Wiltshire in early 2023 and accompanied by a copy of correspondence from the Dorset Finds Liaison Officer confirming the ring does not qualify as Treasure. Condition Report The inscription is legible but shows some wear. The band generally shows wear and is slightly kinked. Band width 3mm, diameter (external) 20-20.5mm, weight 2.3gm.

An antique gold posy ring, of D-section, engraved in italic cursive script ‘God’s provenance is our inheritance’, ring size R½. £400-£600 --- This posy is found on an example in the British Museum, Franks Bequest; ref 1180; and also in the Collection of Mrs C J Longman (Sir John Evans’s Collection) Literature: Joan Evans: English Posies and Posy Rings pub. A late 19th century pearl ring, set with a graduated row of five half-pearls spaced by diamond points, closed back settings, gold mounted, (pearls untested), ring size L-L½. £400-£600 --- Condition Report General light surface wear to the mount and settings commensurate with use. The pearls with good lustre and pinkish-silver overtones. Pearls untested for natural vs. cultured. Ring size approximate as band slightly oval. Gross weight 4.8gm.

An 18ct gold and hardstone memorial ring, 1823, set with a hardstone panel, with black enamel and chased gold decoration, the underbezel inscribed ‘Tho’s Pytches Esq..Ob 11 May 1823 Oct 28th’, London hallmark, ring size K. £200-£300 --- Condition Report General light surface wear commensurate with age and use. The enamel with some light abrasion but no obvious loss. Gross weight 3.5gm.

Lot 89

A ruby and diamond cluster ring, 1903, set with a cushion-shaped ruby in a surround of old brilliant-cut diamonds, between bifurcated shoulders, mounted in 18ct gold, London hallmark, total diamond weight approximately 0.70 carat, ring size M. £800-£1,200 --- According to a verbal report from GCS, the ruby is of Burmese (Mogok) origin, with no indications of heating. Verbal report number 5783-3781.

A diamond single stone ring, the brilliant-cut diamond claw-set to an 18ct gold mount, London hallmark for 1975, diamond weight approximately 0.80 carat, ring size N-N½. £700-£900 --- Condition Report General light surface wear to the mount and settings commensurate with use. The diamond is bright and lively. Assessed in mount by the Department with estimated clarity SI2. Estimated colour grading not possible due to nature of the mount. Gross weight 3.5gm.

An 18ct gold ruby and diamond cluster ring, 1975, the ruby cabochon set within a surround of brilliant-cut diamonds, maker’s mark ‘LJW’, London hallmark, 1.10 carats, ring size S. £800-£1,000 --- Condition Report General light surface wear to the mount and settings commensurate with use. The hallmark slightly rubbed. The ruby is a pinkish red-hue with inclusions typical to the nature of the stone and visible to the unaided eye, the cabochon surface with some hairline fissures. The diamonds bright and lively with good scintillation. Gross weight 5gm.
