Ancient Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. 20K gold ring with an elegantly flattened shank meeting a raised oval bezel containing an amethyst intaglio engraved with a duck, heron, or crane. Interestingly, these birds were domesticated pets, almost as popular as dogs among the ancient Romans according to Beazley. Cranes were particularly popular among gem engravers, due to the ancient belief that they were weather prophets. Size 5; Total Weight 2.1 grams Provenance: Ex-private east coast, USA collection Condition: Minor surface wear and bending to shank and bezel. Near invisible scratch to intaglio. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #119171

Lot 19

Ancient Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An 18 karat gold ring with a deep blue glass intaglio set in an oval bezel. The gold setting is finely worked; note the wavy surround 'framing' the intaglio and the fine, stylized geometric engraving adorning the shank. While possible to see glimpses of the schematized imagery on the intaglio, it is difficult to decipher due to surface wear and encrustations. Total weight: 8.6 grams; Size: intaglio measures .5" L x .375" W (1.3 cm x 1 cm); opening measures .625" L x .5" W (1.6 cm x 1.3 cm) Provenance: Ex-New Hampshire collection, most acquired prior to 1985 Condition: Surface wear and encrustations to intaglio. Shank with surface wear and some bending as shown. Ring is somewhat misshapen, making ring size difficult to discern, closest to size 1. #119484

Lot 23a

Roman, later Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A brick red jasper intaglio set into a modern 18kt gold ring. The intaglio depicts a finely cut Janus figure, bearded and wearing a headband. The presence of the beard dates the piece as beards were not fashionable until the Emperor Hadrian began to wear them, as Plutarch suggests, to hide the scars on his face. The wearing of a beard was also associated with homage to Greek culture, which was then popular. Ring size: 4.5; size of intaglio: 0.5" W x 0.6" H (1.3 cm x 1.5 cm) Provenance: Ex-private east coast, USA collection Condition: Intaglio is in good condition with slight surface scratches but very clear design. #119177

Lot 23b

Roman, later Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A brick red jasper intaglio set into a modern 20kt gold ring. The intaglio appears to depict a bearded senator figure wearing a laurel wreath and a toga. The wearing of a beard was also associated with homage to Greek culture, which was then popular. Ring size 6; size of intaglio: 0.3" W x 0.4" H (0.8 cm x 1 cm) Provenance: Ex-private east coast, USA collection Condition: Intaglio is in excellent condition with very clear artwork All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 25

Late Roman/Early Byzantine period, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. An 18 karat gold signet ring depicting a pair of angels or archangels delineated in fugitive black paint on the face. Angels were believed to reflect the beauty and eternal youth of god as well as serve as messengers and executors of his will. Weight: 5.6 grams. Size: face measures .625" L x .375" W (1.6 cm x 1 cm); opening measures .75" L x .5" W (1.9 cm x 1.3 cm), since ring is misshapen, it will not fit most fingers, but could be worn as a pendant suspended from a chain.
