A 19th century gold and diamond set memorial ring for Napoleon I, circa 1822, the circular bezel with a chased and engraved three colour border of laurel and roses, the matt ground centre dated 1815, a crowned `N` set with rose cut diamonds, the reverse with a hinged glazed compartment with a lock of plaited hair, to open work foliate shoulders, finger size L. Please note: This ring is a number of ring sizes bigger than LNapoleonic memorial rings of this nature were particularly fashionable amongst the literary and aristocratic types at the turn of the 19th century, both during the Emperor`s reign, and after his exile to St Helena and death in 1821. The present example is similar in style to a ring commissioned by the eminent antiquarian, Sir John Soane, dated 1822. This ring, now in the Soane Museum, London, contains a lock of Napoleon`s hair given to him by a friend and stands as evidence of this cosmopolitan fascination with the Napoleonic legend. After the return of Napoleon`s remains to Paris in 1841, there was an even greater demand for rings containing relics of the Emperor.
