L½Footnotes:The posy inscription inside this ring is noted as being from Arthur L. Humphreys' manuscript collection of posies (see Evans, Joan, 'English Posies and Posy Rings', London, 1931, p.67).The name, 'Posy' derives from 'poésie' the French word for poetry. Seemingly plain and simple in design, the most important part of a posy ring, is the concealed inscription to the inner band which had great sentimental significance to the wearer and was intended to be hidden while touching the skin. From the Medieval era until the Wedding Rings Act of 1855, when hallmarking left little room for posy inscriptions, these rings were very popular, to the extent that jewellers held stocks of both plain posy rings waiting to be engraved on request and posy rings that were already engraved for those happy to choose from a selection of inscriptions. L, 2nd approx. P (2)Footnotes:The Halsewell, an East Indiaman on her third voyage from London to Madras, was wrecked in 1786 off the coast of Dorset and the tragedy shocked the nation. The vicar of nearby Worth Matravers recorded how the ship was 'shattered to pieces'. Of over 240 crew and passengers, only 74 survived. King George III visited the scene of the tragedy. The wreck of the Halsewell was the subject of poems, paintings (including one by JMW Turner) and an orchestral symphony. Charles Dickens later described the wreck in a short story. When the two hoops of this ring are connected, they form a bezel in the shape of two clasped right hands. This device, known as a fede, (from the Italian 'mani in fede' meaning 'hands in trust') has been used in love rings since Roman times. The clasping of right hands, known as 'dextrarum iunctio', also symbolises friendship, loyalty and harmony. Fede and gimmel rings were intended as betrothal or marriage rings.
