British Late Iron Age, an inscribed gold quarter stater of the Southern Region/Atrebates and Regni, struck under Verica (AD 10-40) and dating c. AD 10-40. Rudd’s ‘Verica Little Horse Rearing’ type. Obverse: inscription COM F inside rectangular tablet, single pellet-in-ring above and below. Reverse: horse prancing right on exurgal line, inscription ‘VI’ above. Very Fine. Rare, well centred dies. Diameter: 10mm. Weight: 1.15g. ABC 1199, BMC 1179-1206.From the collection of an ex metal detectorist, found Berkshire and Oxfordshire during the 1980s/1990s.
British Late Iron Age, an inscribed gold stater attributed to Cunobelin of the Eastern Region/Trinovantes and Catavellaunii, dating c. AD 10-20. Rudd's 'Cunobelinus Wild' type. Obverse: five-eared stalk of wheat dividing inscription CA/MV. Reverse: somewhat crude horse prancing right, branch and star above back, pellet-in-ring between legs, CVNO below. Nearly Very Fine. Some minor die flaws in reverse fields and a few edge splits, struck on a smaller flan. Diameter: c. 16mm. Weight: 5.36g. ABC 2783. Provenance: ex A Smith collection.
Post-Medieval, a gold finger ring of the 'Posy' type dating to the later 17th or early 18th century. The ring is of high carat gold, consisting a circular 'D' sectioned hoop that is plain on its outer surface. The interior of the hoop demonstrates the following inscription: FOR VERTUES' SAKE MY WIFE I TAKE. This is followed by the makers' mark, the initials 'I B' within a rectangular cartouche. This mark potentially represents that of Joseph Berry (based in London) though this attribution is not certain. External diameter of hoop: c. 22mm. Weight: 6.3g.Provenance: found Rettendon, Essex, 1960s. Processed under Treasure Trove and subsequently disclaimed, Treasure reference 2019T654. Recorded on the PAS as OXON-5EBB97.
Post-Medieval, an exceptionally large and heavyset gold finger ring of the 'posy' type, probably dating to the later 17th or earlier 18th century (c. 1650-1750). Consisting a circular hoop with a prominent 'D' shaped section, the exterior surface of the ring demonstrates signs of wear. Ornately engraved on the interior of the band is the following italicised inscription: I love and like my choyce, the letter 'I' at the start additionally having a decorative hachured central bar. In the gap between the start and end of the inscription, a maker's mark in the form of an oval cartouche containing the initials 'AW' is present. Some minor damage and knocks to edge of hoop. External diameter: c. 24.5mm. Weight: 9.85g. Discussion: 'posy' or 'posey' rings were popular from the Late Medieval period till the 18th century. These items were popular gifts as declarations of love or affection, the word 'posy' denoting the short rhyme contained on their internal surfaces. Based on its size this example is most likely to have been worn by a man, suggesting that these objects were perhaps bought in pairs or alternatively bought by women for men (and vice versa). The maker's mark on this piece may refer to one of two individuals, Andrew Walcott and Arthur Wendover-both of whom were active in London during the later 17th century.Provenance: found Shabbington, Buckinghamshire, 2017. The ring consists a rather wide 'D' sectioned hoop with some wear to the outer surface, the inner demonstrating the following italicised inscription: A mind content cannot repent. Neither hallmarks nor maker's marks are present. External diameter: c. 19.5mm. Thickness of hoop: c. 1.25mm. Weight: c. 4.17g. Discussion: 'posy' or 'posey' rings were popular from the Late Medieval period till the 18th century. These items were popular gifts as declarations of love or affection, the word 'posy' denoting the short rhyme contained on their internal surfaces. Many different inscriptions have been documented, though that present on this example is generally found on rings from the earlier 18th century. A poignant object, perhaps one with sad circumstances of loss.Provenance: found Pilling, Lancs, 2018. Recorded on the PAS as LANCUM-E16C56.
